    Bitcoin and stone money: Anglophone use of Yapese economic cultures, 1910-2020

    Get PDF
    Recently parallels have been drawn between Bitcoin and Yapese stone money. This article focuses on Fitzpatrick and McKeon’s (2019) exploration of similarities and differences. The analogy between Bitcoin and Yapese stone money is based on proposed commonalities that are inaccurate, ill-defined, and/or trivial. However, this does not signal a need to refine the comparison, but rather a need to reconsider the rationale for attempting it in the first place. Recent attempts to redefine Yapese stone money using terminology from the field of cryptocurrency reproduces a longer textual history in which writers from the Global North have misrepresented Yap for pedagogic or polemic convenience. Examples include works by William Furness III, John Maynard Keynes, Milton Friedman, and influential macroeconomics textbooks, such as N. Gregory Mankiw’s Macroeconomics. This history features frequent colonialist tropes of Yap as well as the erasure of histories of colonial violence and power. More caution should be exercised in the study and pedagogic use of Yapese economic cultures, and greater effort should be made to center Yapese voices, acknowledge colonial contexts, and reflect positionality and uncertainty

    Partial wave analysiss of pbar-p -> piminus-piplus, pizero-pizero, eta-eta and eta-etaprime

    Full text link
    A partial wave analysis is presented of Crystal Barrel data on pbar-p -> pizero-pizero, eta-eta and eta-etaprime from 600 to 1940 MeV/c, combined with earlier data on d\sigma /d\Omega and P for pbar-p->piminus-piplus. The following s-channel I=0 resonances are identified: (i) J^{PC} = 5^{--} with mass and width (M,\Gamma) at (2295+-30,235^{+65}_{-40}) MeV, (ii) J^{PC} = 4^{++} at (2020+-12, 170+-15) MeV and (2300+-25, 270+-50) MeV, (iii) 3D3 JPC = 3^{--} at (1960+-15, 150+-25) MeV and (2210+-4$, 360+-55) MeV, and a 3G3 state at (2300 ^{+50}_{-80}, 340+-150) MeV, (iv) JPC = 2^{++} at (1910+-30, 260+-40) MeV, (2020+-30, 275+-35) MeV, (2230+-30, 245+-45) MeV, and (2300+-35, 290+-50) MeV, (v) JPC = 1^{--} at (2005+-40, 275+-75) MeV, and (2165+-40, 160 ^{+140}_{-70}) MeV, and (vi) JPC = 0^{++} at (2005+-30, 305+-50) MeV, (2105+-15, 200+-25) MeV, and (2320+-30, 175+-45) MeV. In addition, there is a less well defined 6^{++} resonance at 2485+-40 MeV, with Gamma = 410+-90 MeV. For every JP, almost all these resonances lie on well defined linear trajectories of mass squared v. excitation number. The slope is 1.10+-0.03 Gev^2 per excitation. The f_0(2105) has strong coupling to eta-\eta, but much weaker coupling to pizero-pizero. Its flavour mixing angle between q-qbar and s-sbar is (59-71.6)deg, i.e. dominant decays to s-sbar. Such decays and its strong production in pbar-p interactions strongly suggest exotic character.Comment: Makes available the combined fit to Crystal Barrel data on pbar-p -> 2-body final states. 29 pages, 11 figures. Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands are among the most dangerous regions in Russia in terms of the impact of avalanches on the population and economics. The orographic conditions of Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands impose limitations on the selection of areas for housing settlements and economic enterprises, that is why many of them are situated in avalanche-prone zones. Sixty-three settlements of the region are located in such zones. The article provides the most complete recent information about catastrophic avalanches on Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands for the period from 1910 to 2020. During this time, 256 events of releases of the catastrophic avalanches were recorded; as a result of which 1203 people were injured, and 783 died. Information on the conditions when catastrophic avalanches release and their characteristics are presented. It was found that during this period cases of people being caught or deceased in avalanches took place in 72% of winters, and in 12% of them there were five or more catastrophic avalanches per season. The largest number of catastrophic avalanches released on the western coast of Southern Sakhalin, which was conditioned by significant economic development and the high avalanche activity on this area. Despite the large number of avalanche victims, engineering avalanche protection still exists on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands only on a very limited number of sites, and avalanche prevention services are few and cannot provide an adequate level of avalanche safety on these territories.Приведены сведения о катастрофических лавинах на острове Сахалин и Курильских островах за период с 1910 по 2020 г. За это время зафиксировано 256 случаев схода катастрофических лавин (пострадали 1203 человека, из них 783 – погибли). Рассмотрены условия схода катастрофических лавин и даны их характеристики. Установлено, что случаи попадания или гибели людей в лавинах отмечены в 72% зим этого периода, а в 12% зим происходило пять и более лавинных катастроф

    Transport of neutral IgG2 versus anionic IgG4 in PD : implications on the electrokinetic model

    Background: It is debated whether transperitoneal membrane transport of larger (charged) molecules in peritoneal dialysis can be partially governed by the electrokinetic model. In this model, it is postulated that streaming potentials are generated across the capillary wall by forced filtration of an ionic solution, for example transcapillary ultrafiltration induced by osmotic forces as in peritoneal dialysis. We investigated the presence of streaming potentials in the process of transperitoneal transport in Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) patients by measuring ratios of dialysate concentrations of IgG2 (neutral) and IgG4 (negative), both 150kD, under different conditions of transcapillary ultrafiltration. Methods: Adult PD patients randomly got two consecutive dwells of 120 min each, with either 2 L Physioneal 1.36% or 3.86% glucose dialysis fluid (Baxter, USA) as their first dwell. A blood sample was taken at the test start, and dialysate samples were taken at 5, 15, 30, 60 and 120 min. IgG2 and IgG4 concentrations were measured (ELISA) and ratios calculated. Results: In 10 patients (65 +/- 17 years, 2017 months on dialysis), drained volume after 120 min was different between the 1.36% (1950 [1910; 2020] mL) and 3.86% (2540 [2380; 2800] mL) glucose dwells (P = 0.007). At none of the time points and irrespective of glucose concentration, a significant difference was found between the IgG2/IgG4 ratios at any time point. Conclusion: Our data failed to demonstrate a difference in the transport ratios of two macromolecules with same molecular weight but different charge, as would be expected by the electrokinetic model, and this despite sufficient differences in transcapillary ultrafiltration

    The Hidden Homeownership Welfare State: An International Long-Term Perspective on the Tax Treatment of Homeowners

    Welfare is traditionally understood through social security decommodifying labor markets orsocial investment policies. In the domain of housing, however, welfare for homeowners is largelyhidden in the tax codes’ fiscal exemptions. Based on a content analysis of legislation, this pa-per introduces a novel yearly database of 37 countries between 1910 and 2020 to uncover the“hidden welfare state” of taxes on imputed rent, deductibility of mortgage payments, housingcapital gains tax and VAT on newly built dwellings. Summary indices of homeownership at-tractiveness and neutrality of the tax code show that fiscal homeownership policies have beenin decline until the 1980s and risen ever since. They are in place where finance is liberally andlabor restrictively regulated. Contrary to the classical welfare state, they are not associatedwith an economic logic of industrialism or left-wing governments, but a rent-regulation alter-native of Common-Law jurisdictions and smaller countries. As welfare for property owners, thelogic of fiscal homeownership welfare diverges from the classical welfare for the laboring classes.1 Introduction 2 Explaining homeowner supporting policies 3 Tax treatment of the owner-occupied housing 3.1 Imputed rent tax 3.2 Tax deductibility of mortgage payments 3.3 Capital gains tax 3.4 VAT on the new dwellings 4 Quantification of taxation attractiveness and tenure neutrality 4.1 Leximetric approach to taxation policies 4.2 Our approach 5 Results: descriptive and explanatory assessment of homeownership welfare 5.1 Individual tax indices 5.2 Correlation with other regulation indices 5.3 Regression analysis 6 Discussion and conclusion Literature Appendix A: Robustness tests Appendix B: An overview of the evolution of the country-specific homeowner-ship tax treatment Argentina Australia Austria Belgium Brazil Canada Chile Colombia Czech Republic Denmark Estonia Finland France Germany India Ireland Israel Italy Japan Latvia Lithuania Luxembourg Netherlands New Zealand Norway Peru Poland Portugal Russia South Africa South Korea Spain Sweden Switzerland Turkey United Kingdom US

    Das Profil der PolitikerInnen linker Parteien in grossen Schweizer Städten, 1910-2020

    Get PDF
    Die grossen Schweizer Städte haben zwei Perioden der politischen Dominanz der Linken erlebt: in der Zwischenkriegszeit und seit den 1990er Jahren. Diese Studie untersucht, wie sich das sozio-professionelle Profil der gewählten VertreterInnen der linken Parteien in den Exekutiv- und Legislativorganen der vier grössten Schweizer Städte (Basel, Genf, Lausanne und Zürich) zwischen 1910 und 2020 verändert hat. In der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts handelte es sich mehrheitlich um ArbeitnehmerInnen aus der Unterschicht, die einen manuellen Beruf ausübten und keinen Hochschulabschluss besassen. Ab 1980 stammen die gewählten Vertreter der städtischen Linken mehrheitlich aus der lohnabhängigen Mittelschicht, und haben ein höheres Bildungsniveau und einen höheren beruflichen Status. Unter den PolitikerInnen der Linken ist dieser Prozess insbesondere durch das fast vollständige Verschwinden von Angehörigen der Arbeiterklasse sowie den Aufstieg der soziokulturellen SpezialistInnen gekennzeichnet, die im Gesundheits- und Sozialwesen, im Bildungswesen und in der Kulturbranche arbeiten

    The Urban Left in Power: Comparing the Profiles of ‘Municipal Socialists' and the ‘New Urban Left' in Swiss Cities

    Get PDF
    Today, many cities in post-industrial societies are strongholds of left and progressive political forces. Almost 100 years ago, left parties had instituted municipal socialism in several European cities. In this article, we compare these two periods of left urban rule by focusing on the long-term changes over the last 120 years in the socio-demographic profile of urban left elites in four major Swiss cities. Our analysis of left elected representatives at six key dates highlights the main differences between the municipal socialists of the interwar period and the new urban left that rules contemporary cities. The former are members of the working class, blue-collar workers without university education, while the latter are members of the upper-middle class, highly educated sociocultural professionals. The results of our analysis contribute to a better understanding of the sociological composition of urban left-progressive political forces, an aspect that is somewhat neglected in recent research on the urban left. We discuss the potential political implications and further research avenues for contemporary debates in urban studies, in terms of urban policy priorities and political mobilization
