Based on theoretical knowledge and practical experience tasks for such an information system are described, as well as possible ways of implementation and the real product - Distance Education Information System

The Hatsopoulos-Gyftopoulos resolution of the Schroedinger-Park paradox about the concept of "state" in quantum statistical mechanics

    Get PDF
A seldom recognized fundamental difficulty undermines the concept of individual ``state'' in the present formulations of quantum statistical mechanics (and in its quantum information theory interpretation as well). The difficulty is an unavoidable consequence of an almost forgotten corollary proved by E. Schroedinger in 1936 and perused by J.L. Park, Am. J. Phys., Vol. 36, 211 (1968). To resolve it, we must either reject as unsound the concept of state, or else undertake a serious reformulation of quantum theory and the role of statistics. We restate the difficulty and discuss a possible resolution proposed in 1976 by G.N. Hatsopoulos and E.P. Gyftopoulos, Found. Phys., Vol. 6, 15, 127, 439, 561 (1976).Comment: RevTeX4, 7 pages, corrected a paragraph and added an example at page 3, to appear in Mod. Phys. Lett.

    Investor Protection and Equity Markets

    Get PDF
We present a simple model of an entrepreneur going public in an environment with poor legal protection of outside shareholders. The model incorporates elements of Becker's (1968) crime and punishment' framework into a corporate finance environment of Jensen and Meckling (1976). We examine the entrepreneur's decision and the market equilibrium. The model is consistent with a number of empirical regularities concerning the relationship between investor protection and corporate finance.

Orf and Hymowitz (1976) using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that the seed protein band called A by Larsen and Caldwell (1968) occurs at Rf 0.36 and the seed protein band called B occurs at Rf 0.42 (Rf= mobility relative to a bromophenol blue dye front in a 10% polyacrylamide gel anodic system using a pH 8.3 Tris-glycine buffer). The inheritance of these proteins (although the proteins were not characterized) was reported as being controlled by two codominant alleles at a single locus (Larsen and Caldwell, 1968). Orf and Hymowitz (1976) proposed the gene symbols Sp1a and Sp1b for the electrophoretic forms that occur at Rf 0.36 and Rf 0.42, respectively

Post seismic intervention strategies over the last fifty years in Italy (1968 – 2016). Initial observations about the vernacular architecture’s conservation

[EN] The numerous reconstruction experiences after the great earthquakes occurred in Italy during the last fifty years (Sicily, 1968 – central Italy, 2016) have given way to a great improvement of the Italian post-seismic emergency management and differ from each other by their results in terms of degree of conservation of the pre-existent buildings. Through the summary analysis of the legislation adopted for the reconstruction process after the Belice (1968) and Friuli (1976) earthquakes, this contribution aims at investigating the peculiarities of the different intervention strategies adopted for the conservation of the traditional masonry buildings and the historical built landscape – to which they belong – recognised as the essential component of the Italian cultural heritage. Specifically, the 1968 and 1976 earthquakes provided an opportunity to enhance the cultural debate on the approach to the towns destroyed by seismic events and initiated an ongoing process which progressively moved towards an increasing recognition of the vernacular architecture’s value.Macca, V. Biological and climatic influences on the dace Leuciscus leuciscus in a southern chalk-stream

    Get PDF
The dace, Leuciscus leuciscus (L.) is an important cyprinid in terms of population biomass in chalk streams of southern England. Dace recruitment has been shown to vary widely from year to year and it is thought that this variation is largely as a result of the influence of abiotic factors, chiefly water temperature. From 1968 to 1981 there was a thirteen-fold difference in the year class structure index between the minimum index (0.25 in 1972) and the maximum (3.21 in 1976). The problems of such variation, especially those that could ensue from a succession of poor year-classes, are offset by the spread of reproductive effort by each female over several years

Women’s political representation in small island developing states : a comparative analysis of Mauritius and Seychelles

    Get PDF
A notable feature of the island studies literature is the gap at the level of research and data on gender issues. This paper look at the gender dimensions of political representation in two Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Indian Ocean: Mauritius and Seychelles. The paper discusses the gendered aspects of scale, boundedness, isolation and fragmentation that are characteristic of island states in the contexts of Mauritius and Seychelles. Mauritius and Seychelles both inherited British colonial structures and became independent in 1968 and 1976. Smallness is a salient feature of both islands, but women’s political trajectories and success differ substantially. Drawing from published sources, this paper attempts to explain the different trends in gendered political presence in Mauritius and Seychelles. The paper also discusses the implications for women’s political empowerment in SIDS.peer-reviewe
