Completing an Educational Leadership Picture: Feminine Essentials from an Australian Perspective.

    Get PDF
The position of women in Australian society, and other westernized countries has not improved greatly. Over the past two decades, a variety of feminist frameworks have been put forward to explain women's almost absence from formal leadership positions and highlight the various barriers that have contributed to this situation. In this book chapter we argue that the dominant culture of educational institutions is masculine. Thus valued practices are those which support competition, hierarchy and individualism (Blackmore 1997), while more feminine models of caring, concern and consensus are devalued or ignored. Because of this incomplete picture, our chapter outlines some important principles and relevant practices that create more feminine ways of leading organizations

High School Students as Mentors: Findings From the Big Brothers Big Sisters School-Based Mentoring Impact Study Executive Summary

    Get PDF
Recently, high schools have become a popular source of mentors for school-based mentoring (SBM) programs. This executive summary outlines key findings and recommendations from our High School Students as Mentors report, which drew on data from our large-scale random assignment impact study of Big Brothers Big Sisters SBM (Herrera, et al. 2007). Our research indicated that, on average, high school students were much less effective than adults at yielding impacts for the youth they mentor, but it also identified several program practices that were linked with longer, stronger and more effective high school mentor relationships

The Colony Church site (41RA31) is an ancestral Caddo mound center in the Post Oak Savannah of the upper Sabine River basin in East Texas; it is the westernmost Caddo mound site on the Sabine River. The site was recorded in the late 1960s, as part of an archaeological survey of the proposed Mineola Reservoir on the Sabine River. The reservoir was never constructed

Integrating Ayurvedic Concepts with Western Measures for Treating Mental Health in India

    Get PDF
With a steadily growing population that has just reached over 1 billion people, India is on track to become the most populated country on earth. With this population continuing to grow, the issue of mental health within the subcontinent is becoming increasingly important. The “Western” ideas and concepts of mental health are heavily considered as taboo within many parts of India due to socio-cultural reasons, limiting the response to mental health problems. However, the integration of indigenous concepts and techniques from Ayurvedic medicine can ameliorate socio-cultural concerns and thus be the key to make progress addressing mental health in India. Ayurveda has been established as the traditional system of healthcare in India for thousands of years. The basis of Ayurveda revolves around the three Doshas, which are different combinations of characteristics that influence our physical and mental tendencies. The three Doshas are Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha. These Doshas along with their meanings and characteristics that they represent in terms of well being have great potential to be integrated alongside western measures of mental health in a clinical setting. For this poster, I will cover a few examples from classical Ayurvedic thought and contemporary discussions that detail how Ayurvedic techniques can be paired with mainstream western measures of mental health to assess and treat these health issues

The Fundamentals of Radar with Applications to Autonomous Vehicles

    Get PDF
Radar systems can be extremely useful for applications in autonomous vehicles. This paper seeks to show how radar systems function and how they can apply to improve autonomous vehicles. First, the basics of radar systems are presented to introduce the basic terminology involved with radar. Then, the topic of phased arrays is presented because of their application to autonomous vehicles. The topic of digital signal processing is also discussed because of its importance for all modern radar systems. Finally, examples of radar systems based on the presented knowledge are discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of radar systems in autonomous vehicles

Load flow studies on stand alone microgrid system in Ranau, Sabah

    Get PDF
This paper presents the power flow or load flow analysis of Ranau microgrid, a standalone microgrid in the district of Ranau,West Coast Division of Sabah. Power flow for IEEE 9 bus also performed and analyzed. Power flow is define as an important tool involving numerical analysis applied to power system. Power flow uses simplified notation such as one line diagram and per-unit system focusing on voltages, voltage angles, real power and reactive power. To achieved that purpose, this research is done by analyzing the power flow analysis and calculation of all the elements in the microgrid such as generators, buses, loads, transformers, transmission lines using the Power Factory DIGSilent 14 software to calculate the power flow. After the analysis and calculations, the results were analysed and compared
