Teaching Industrial Design Criticism

This paper presents a methodology that allows students to learn criticism as a conceptual tool. Expertise is built up incrementally through the utilisation of lectures, seminars, debate and student presentations. I intend to show how this method can facilitate productive thought about many aspects of design, therefore fostering a more mature approach to criticism than many undergraduates may otherwise achieve. This is brought about through considering together the aspects of a design that third year undergraduate students will already know or can readily infer about a product. They are not required to accommodate much new knowledge, but are shown a way of rearranging aspects of their existing knowledge of diverse subjects such as design history, design theory, materials and manufacturing technology and ergonomics in order to allow critical thinking to take place. The methodology can also be further adapted to allow for criticism of various types of design commentary. Various methods of assessment are proposed, and the most effective ways of both facilitating critical thinking during assessment and judging the development and quality of that thinking are discussed

New records of Agromyzidae (Diptera) from western Turkey

Specimens were collected once a week from Mugla province, western Turkey, in 2000 and 2001 from cultured and non-cultured plants. During this study Ophiomyia pulicaria (Meigen, 1830); Aulagromyza buhri (de Meijere, 1938); Chromatomyia scolopendri (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1851); Liriomyza flaveola (Fallen 1823); Liriomyza sativae Blanchard, 1938; Phytomyza angelicae Kaltenbach, 1872; Phytomyza conyzae Hering, 1920; Phytomyza rufipes Meigen, 1830; Phytomyza thysselinivora Hering, 1924 are newly recorded for the Turkish leafminer fauna. Dytiscidae and Noteridae of Wisconsin (Coleoptera). V. Distribution, Habitat, Life Cycle, and Identification of Species of Hydroporinae, Except \u3ci\u3eHydroporus\u3c/i\u3e Clairville Sensu Lato

Thirty species in 11 genera of Hydroporinae were collected in Wisconsin over the past 32 years, excluding those in Hydorporus s.l. Fourteen species of Hygrotus were found; other genera were represented by one to four species. Species keys and notes on identification are provided for adults of all species that occur or may occur in Wisconsin. Information on distribution and abundance in Wisconsin, habitat, and life cycle is provided for each species based on a study of 34,628 adults. Life cycles were predominantly univoltine, with adults overwintering and larvae completing development from late spring to late summer, depending on the species. Most adults apparently overwinter in aquatic habitats, except those of Laccornis and Hygrotus compar, which probably overwinter in terrestrial habitats

Archaeological Sites Along Cuthand Creek and the Sulphur River in the Mid–Sulphur River Basin, Red River County, Texas

The Cuthand Creek and Little Mustang Creek drainage basins in the mid–Sulphur River basin are in the Post Oak Savannah of East Texas. Prehistoric archaeological sites are abundant in both basins and along the Sulphur River, dating from as early as Paleoindian times to the Late Caddo periods. Nevertheless, this area remains poorly known and there have been few professional archaeological investigations conducted here. In this article, we present information on a range of prehistoric sites and associated artifact assemblages known along Cuthand Creek and the Sulphur River in the mid–Sulphur River Basin, in Red River County, Texas. The artifacts that are discussed herein are in the collections of the junior author
