Harvey Staal, RCA minister and missionary, graduated from Hope College (1943) and the Western Theological Seminary. Staal and his wife served in Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman and Lebanon. In 1966, they returned to the U. S.for two years while Staal worked toward his doctorate in Arabic at the University of Utah. In 1972, Staal became the first pastor of the Protestant Church in Muscat, Oman. Staal later became pastor to the English-speaking congregation of the Community Church of Beirut. His Utah doctoral theses, a modern Arabic translation of the Syriac text of Epistles and Acts, known as Mt. Sinai Arabia Codex 151, were later published as a scholarly book. The Staal collection is ripe with materials describing missionary efforts in the strife-torn Middle East, as well as four decades of photographic slides

Time resolved fission in metal clusters

We explore from a theoretical point of view pump and probe (P&P) analysis for fission of metal clusters where probe pulses are generalized to allow for scanning various frequencies. We show that it is possible to measure the time the system needs to develop to scission. This is achieved by a proper choice of both delay and frequency of the probe pulse. A more detailed analysis even allows to access the various intermediate stages of the fission process.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Prof. dr hab. Jana Konopnickiego pt. „Trafność oceny poziomu umysłowego uczniów przez nauczycieli”. Stopień naukowy doktora nauk humanistycznych nadała jej w 1977 roku Rada Wydziału Filozoflczno-Historycznego Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego na podstawie rozprawy doktorskiej pt. „Działalność poradni wychowawczo-zawodowej jako instytucjonalnej determinanty orientacji zawodowej” (...)

Probing the momentum dependence of medium modifications of the nucleon-nucleon elastic cross sections

The momentum dependence of the medium modifications on nucleon-nucleon elastic cross sections is discussed with microscopic transport theories and numerically investigated with an updated UrQMD microscopic transport model. The semi-peripheral Au+Au reaction at beam energy Eb=400AE_b=400A MeV is adopted as an example. It is found that the uncertainties of the momentum dependence on medium modifications of cross sections influence the yields of free nucleons and their collective flows as functions of their transverse momentum and rapidity. Among these observables, the elliptic flow is sensitively dependent on detailed forms of the momentum dependence and more attention should be paid. The elliptic flow is hardly influenced by the probable splitting effect of the neutron-neutron and proton-proton cross sections so that one might pin down the mass splitting effect of the mean-field level at high beam energies and high nuclear densities by exploring the elliptic flow of nucleons or light clusters.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

An oxygen isotope record of lacustrine opal from a European Maar indicates climatic stability during the Last Interglacial

The penultimate temperate period, 127–110 ka before present (BP), bracketed by abrupt shifts of the global climate system initiating and terminating it, is considered as an analogue of the Holocene because of a similar low global ice‐volume. Ice core records as well as continental and marine records exhibit conflicting evidence concerning the climate variability within this period, the Last Interglacial. We present, for the first time, a high‐resolution record of oxygen isotopes in diatom opal of the Last Interglacial obtained from the Ribains Maar in France (44°50′09″N 3°49′16″E). Our results indicate that the Last Interglacial in southwestern Europe was generally a period of climatic stability. The record shows that the temperate period was initiated by an abrupt warm event followed midway by a minor climatic transition to a colder climate. An abrupt isotopic depletion that occurs simultaneously with abrupt changes in pollen and diatom assemblages marks the end of the temperate period, and is correlative with the Melisey I stadial. Variations in the isotopic composition of lake‐water related to the isotopic composition of precipitation and evaporation dominate the biogenic opal oxygen isotope record
