Graphic Designers and Brain Surgeons, Both Highly Trained, Yet Not Interchangeable: The Creation of Promotion Materials for Springfest 2014

    Get PDF
Graphic design and brain surgery. What do they have in common? Each person is trained in their profession. Each person is called upon for services that are needed for a specific reason. Common sense tells you to not perform brain surgery without the proper training. Why would that be any different for Graphic Design? Whereas most people would never attempt brain surgery, the average person seems more than willing to attempt creating Graphic Design, usually with poor results. Event branding is an example of where training in this profession is most beneficial. I was the Graphic Designer in charge of creating the branding needs for the week-long 2014 “Springfest” event for my clients, Matt Miller and Gianna Mazzola from the University’s student-run Program Committee. This required the creation of cohesive product design, frequent communication with the client, and a balance between client specifications and personal creative input. The goal was to design a fully realized brand system that would captivate the consumer and evoke the appropriate feel of the 2014 Springfest theme: Lego©

Using the instructional computing design process to introduce and incorporate the Boys Town social skills

    Get PDF
The following paper takes an inside look on how to use the Instructional Computing Design process to create instructional software that focuses on the Boys Town Social Skills. Within the planning, designing, and development of this multimedia project, the paper will also concentrate on the projects standards, management of the project, and an ongoing evaluation of the project. A great amount of discussion in the paper focuses on how to develop software that is used to instruct and guide learners using the Boys Town Social Skills. Each step of the ICD process will be described to reveal how the Boys Town Social Skills Model was implemented into the curriculum effectively and efficiently as a software program. The project will then be described by taking a tour within the program, and finish off with insights gained from the ICD process and the description of possible future projects

Parsing the Visual Rhetoric of Office Dress Codes: A Two-Step Process to Increase Inclusivity and Professionalism in Legal-Workplace Fashion

    Get PDF
Legal employers expect attorneys in their offices to use the ethos of personal appearance to project an image of competence to clients. This expectation is largely unspoken, however, and polling and anecdotal evidence alike show that in today’s workplace, employers are frustrated with the level of professionalism demonstrated by new employees. The goal of this article is to encourage open conversations about workplace fashion as it relates to an attorney’s professional identity. It is in both the employer’s and employee’s interests to clarify employer expectations and empower new members of the legal profession to adopt a personal sense of style that projects competence, leadership, and professionalism, without subtracting out the self. Professional style and ethos, not conformity, should be the goal of office dress codes. This article is written from the perspective of a legal writing professor and advocates an approach to building a positive office culture by training new lawyers to parse the message of unwritten dress codes and participate in drafting inclusive office policies that accommodate disparate cultural, racial, and gender experiences. By making the unconscious conscious through open communication about employer goals and employees’ professional identities, biases can be overcome and new attorneys prepared for a profession where choice of dress projects an instantaneous message about an individual’s business judgment

Analyzing the future of technology and society. Scania and the case of the Russian fuel market.

Issue of study: The development of technology and society is closely linked. Mutual dependency and complex interrelationships make straightforward analysis of issues regarding the future of technology and society hard to perform. Therefore, the study addresses the question of how organizations should describe and analyze the interactions of technology and society in order to gain a better understanding of what the future may bring. Purpose: • To develop a method for analysis of the future course of issues regarding technology and society in interaction. • To apply and test the developed method through a case study, where it is used to analyze the future of the Russian fuel market. Method: In the study, a holistic systems approach is applied. Through combining theory about socio-technical systems with elements from scenario-based techniques, the FUTSTEPS method is developed. The socio-technical systems theory is used to understand and structure the complex interactions of technology and society. The scenario-based techniques form the basis of the developed FUTSTEPS method, which enables a systematic description, analysis, and presentation of empirical data in relevant issues regarding the future of technology and society. The FUTSTEPS method is applied and tested in a case study of the Russian fuel market. Conclusions: The FUTSTEPS method is a tool for finding the most important factors determining an issue involving technology and society. The developed theoretical framework connects socio-technical systems to scenario-based techniques, thus filling the latter with structured content. The FUTSTEPS method allows for a more formalized and rigorous step-by-step construction of scenarios for issues regarding the future of technology and society than previous techniques. It can be used for analysis of a range of complex multiparty issues. The case study showed that the four most important fuels for the future in Russia are CNG, diesel, DME, and E-fuels. The constructed extreme scenarios connected each fuel to a certain development of society. Among the identified key factors, the development in the European Union and Asian countries, together with the level of Russian protectionism, were found to have the largest impact on the future course. In order to anticipate what the future will bring, Scania should monitor five of the key factors and conduct additional research in five key areas of knowledge

This project focuses on aligning seventh-grade social studies with Washington State\u27s Essential Academic Leaming Requirements, the state\u27s curriculum guide. In the last decade standards-based education has swept across the United States and the results in Washington have changed the face of education. The project itself presents a variety of lessons that are aligned with the seventh-grade standards for social studies. Lessons are separated into the four disciplines in social studies: history, geography, civics, and economics. Each lesson teaches some aspect of a selected social studies requirement. The review of literature examines the standards-based reform and its resulting affects in Washington State, particularly social studies. Those results include the Essential Academic Leaming Requirements and the Washington Assessment of Student Leaming
