Use of collaborative platform to facilitate informal design communication: a case study
Construction projects are becoming increasingly complex and multidisciplinary; they involve a constant exchange and coordination of information between different specialists and stakeholders. There is a lack of tools to support the informal collaborative activity in situ and remotely [1]. This research aims to introduce a new remote synchronous e-platform to the architectural design team to bridge the gap of work between office and construction site. The paper presents two experimentations conducted in offices and on-site. Notwithstanding technical issues resulting from an unstable Internet connection during the experiments, results show the tool’s potential to improve communication between teams, especially for teams on construction sites. The implementation of the tool requires a clear work protocol and efforts to convince other stakeholders
From urban concept to urban engineering: The contribution of distributed collaborative design to the management of urban projects
International audienceThe complexity of urban systems is an increasingly common topic in academic literature. Following in the footsteps of the industrial sector, which has understood this issue for many years, urban engineering must also tackle the challenges created by complex systems. Industrial engineering has provided a number of responses to this challenge, including design technologies, which are notably collaborative. It seems possible, at least in theory, to transfer a number of best practice methods and adapt these to the conceptualization of urban development projects (in the initial phase) in order to encourage their global management (in terms of strategic decision making) and their social acceptability. The challenge is then to formulate new methodological models, as well as to create an environment dedicated to their application
Interação Entre o Arquiteto e as Ferramentas Digitais nas Etapas Iniciais de Projeto
In the early stages of design, the architect works by applying implicit knowledge to make initially diffuse and progressively better-defined decisions. This progression needs a kind of representation that could adapt to this reflective process, such as the sketch. Among the many digital technologies available, architects do not count with one that supports the early stages of design in this way. This absence leads to workflow issues and fails to address performance solutions. A comparative study is presented, in which experimental software functionalities existing between 2003 and 2014 were tested using available hardware, to support these activities. Furthermore, it described how these functionalities should be integrated to meet the needs in architectural drawing and design in the early stages.

Globally Distributed Engineering Teams in Computational Fluid Dynamics and in Product Development
Globally distributed engineering teams are a reality in globally operating companies.
However, research on teams is often done by psychologists, with a focus on general
team building and working processes, and seldom on engineering teams and the
challenges and benefits that are specific to them. In this thesis, experimental research
on two globally distributed engineering teams is presented. First, one instance of
globally distributed teams in computational fluid dynamics is scrutinized. Second,
experimental research on idea generation methods used in globally distributed teams
during the conceptual design phase of the product development process is presented.
An experimental study simulating the global distribution of a three person
Computational Fluid Dynamics team shows that successful sequential processing of a
problem is possible given technological support by different internet based
technologies.
Three succeeding studies researched the influence of space and time during idea
generation for an engineering problem, leading to the conclusion in the final study that
idea generation in distributed engineering teams is a valid option. It is shown that the
idea generation method has a significant effect on the number of ideas generated per
team member. Further, the quality, novelty, and variety are each significantly influenced
by both the idea generation method chosen and the team member’s location, but in
different ways by the same level of each factor. Concluding, both experiments in distributed engineering teams show these teams have
unused potential that can be utilized using appropriate process, procedures and tools
Multimedia Development of English Vocabulary Learning in Primary School
In this paper, we describe a prototype of web-based intelligent handwriting education
system for autonomous learning of Bengali characters. Bengali language is used by more than
211 million people of India and Bangladesh. Due to the socio-economical limitation, all of the
population does not have the chance to go to school. This research project was aimed to develop
an intelligent Bengali handwriting education system. As an intelligent tutor, the system can
automatically check the handwriting errors, such as stroke production errors, stroke sequence
errors, stroke relationship errors and immediately provide a feedback to the students to correct
themselves. Our proposed system can be accessed from smartphone or iPhone that allows
students to do practice their Bengali handwriting at anytime and anywhere. Bengali is a
multi-stroke input characters with extremely long cursive shaped where it has stroke order
variability and stroke direction variability. Due to this structural limitation, recognition speed is
a crucial issue to apply traditional online handwriting recognition algorithm for Bengali
language learning. In this work, we have adopted hierarchical recognition approach to improve
the recognition speed that makes our system adaptable for web-based language learning. We
applied writing speed free recognition methodology together with hierarchical recognition
algorithm. It ensured the learning of all aged population, especially for children and older
national. The experimental results showed that our proposed hierarchical recognition algorithm
can provide higher accuracy than traditional multi-stroke recognition algorithm with more
writing variability
