    EventMask

    Get PDF
Events emerged in the last years as a driving concept to efficiently index and retrieve media. Several approaches have been proposed to analyse the relationship between events and related media, to enable event discovery, event-based tagging, or event-based media retrieval. Notwithstanding the outstanding work done by several researchers in this area, a major still unsolved problem is how to understand the inherent link between visual concepts and events, and in particular, which are the key elements that allow a human being to perceive from a media collection what is the underlying event. In this demo, we address this problem in an original way by exploiting human knowledge using a game with a hidden purpose. Users are engaged in a competition, where they can alternatively try to mask a photo collection to prevent other users to recognize the related event or they can see a photo partially masked and try to guess the event connected. A set of rules and an adequate score system force players to focus on real important details, thus allowing the detection of most event-related salient parts of the media. The final result is a saliency map that, differently from the typical concept of saliency, highlights the visual concepts that are considered fundamental to perceive the nature of an event

Etica e professioni sanitarie in Europa. Un dialogo fra medicina e filosofia

    Get PDF
This multilingual volume brings together some of the results of research conducted at the Department of Literature and Philosophy of the University of Trento (Italy), in collaboration with the Bruno Kessler Foundation (Trento, Italy). Topics related to ethics and professions in the healthcare and other fields were covered, analyzed both from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. After presenting some introductory thoughts on the distinction between different levels and forms of ethical reflection on healthcare and the significance of the individual moral conscience as far as these levels are concerned, the first part of the book discusses some European traditions in healthcare professional ethics: it includes a Spanish account of different moral traditions in healthcare ethics, a reconstruction of the British experience and evolution of this field, a report on the Belgian contemporary situation, a presentation of the role of the Medical Associations in the German area, a description of the evolution of medical ethics in Croatia and a focus on nursing ethics and medical ethics in Italy. Two empirical studies are then described: one qualitative based on 40 interviews with clinicians, and one quantitative based on a web survey of more than 1,000 physicians; the first was conducted in the Province of Trento, the second in that of Verona (Northern Italy). The book concludes with a number of interviews with clinicians and a philosophical reflection on the nature of the obligations related to the practice of caring. The book is intended to cover the main moral questions faced by clinicians today and to offer a novel self-representation of their work and its ethical meaning in contemporary healthcare practice. Medicine and philosophy have a long history of dialogue: this volume continues that discussion, searching for new ways to combine a strong scientific approach with reflections on the moral and anthropological structures of clinical practic

An Experiment in Managing Language Diversity Across Cultures

    Get PDF
Developing ontologies from scratch appears to be very expensive in terms of cost and time required and often such efforts remain unfinished for decades. Ontology localization through translation seems to be a promising approach towards addressing this issue as it enables the greater reuse of the ontological (backbone) structure. However, during ontology localization, managing language diversity across cultures remains as a challenge that has to be taken into account and dealt with the right level of attention and expertise. Furthermore, reliability of the provided knowledge in the localized ontology is appearing as a non-trivial issue to be addressed. In this paper, we report the result of our experiment, performed on approximately 1000 concepts taken from the space ontology originally developed in English, consisted in providing their translation into Mongolian

SensEH: From Simulation to Deployment of Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks

    Get PDF
Energy autonomy and system lifetime are critical concerns in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), for which energy harvesting (EH) is emerging as a promising solution. Nevertheless, the tools supporting the design of EH-WSN are limited to a few simulators that require developers to re-implement the application with programming languages different from WSN ones. Further, simulators notoriously provide only a rough approximation of the reality of low-power wireless communication. In this paper we present SENSEH, a software framework that allows developers to move back and forth between the power and speed of a simulated approach and the reality and accuracy of in-field experiments. SENSEH relies on COOJA for emulating the actual, deployment-ready code, and provides two modes of operation that allow the reuse of exactly the same code in realworld WSN deployments. We describe the toolchain and software architecture of SENSEH, and demonstrate its practical use and benefits in the context of a case study where we investigate how the lifetime of a WSN used for adaptive lighting in road tunnels can be extended using harvesters based on photovoltaic panels

Recognizing Hospital Care Activities with a Coat Pocket Worn Smartphone

    Get PDF
In this work, we show how a smart-phone worn unobtrusively in a nurses coat pocket can be used to document the patient care activities performed during a regular morning routine. The main contribution is to show how, taking into account certain domain specific boundary conditions, a single sensor node worn in such an (from the sensing point of view) unfavorable location can still recognize complex, sometimes subtle activities. We evaluate our approach in a large real life dataset from day to day hospital operation. In total, 4 runs of patient care per day were collected for 14 days at a geriatric ward and annotated in high detail by following the performing nurses for the entire duration. This amounts to over 800 hours of sensor data including acceleration, gyroscope, compass, wifi and sound annotated with groundtruth at less than 1min resolution

    Get PDF
ISP) in relazione all'illecito commesso dagli utenti della rete.

    Multi-device Activity Logging

    Get PDF
In this paper we are presenting i-Log, a system which is able to collect user’s personal information, generate streams of data from smartphone’s integrated sensors and attached wearable devices. We decided to focus our attention on these general purpose devices as we believe they can generate truthful readings because of their easy integration with our day-life activities, while invasive dedicated logging devices can alter our normal routines. The system consists of a Mobile Application that collects sensor data from the smartphone and from additional external wearable devices through a Bluetooth connection. We designed it to be user friendly, transparent, unobtrusive and able to provide smart sensing strategies in order to preserve battery life. Moreover, i-Log has a back-end server that accepts streams of data from the application and stores them into a persistent storage system that can be queried for further real time analysis

I beni comuni digitali. Valorizzazione delle informazioni pubbliche in Trentino

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Creation of Software within the Academic Context: Knowledge Transfer, Intellectual Property Rights, and Licences

    Get PDF
Using the method of comparative analysis, this paper explores different legal issues related to software management within universities. It is organized in two sections. The first section will deal with the crucial issue of ownership of intellectual property rights in copyrights and patents, outlining the discussion with reference to the specific objective of this review. The regulatory framework in this field, which is often opaque due to the different regulations that characterize the diverse forms of intellectual property rights, is made even more incomprehensible by providing different legal regimes according to the status of the person who has carried out the research (professors, lecturers, fellows, graduate students, etc.). The second section provides an explanation of the role that contract law, and specifically licensing, has in the exploitation of software. Finally, considerations of a general nature will be developed and some operational solutions proposed, primarily aimed at emphasizing the importance of a systematic approach to the transfer of knowledge in a university environment
