    Weight Loss and Self-Monitoring among Young Men in a Technology-Driven Weight Loss Intervention

    Background Young men with obesity have double the mortality risk compared to young men with a healthy weight, but are notoriously challenging to recruit for behavioral weight loss (BWL) programs. Emerging evidence suggests that young men might prefer self-guided or low touch interventions, but limited data are available as to their effectiveness. To inform future efforts, we conducted a secondary analysis of young men’s performance in a technology-driven BWL trial developed specifically for young adults. Objectives were to: 1) examine young men’s enrollment rates; and 2) compare young men and women’s weight loss outcomes and self-regulation behaviors. Methods Data were drawn from an ongoing randomized controlled trial targeting young adults (18-25 years, body mass index 25-45 kg/m2) for weight loss. Participants (N=184, 60% racial / ethnic minority, BMI=33.2) were recruited using a multi-method approach and randomized to one of three arms, all of which received a 6-month technology mediated intervention with content adapted specifically for young adults. For the purposes of the present analysis, outcomes of interest included weight change at 3 months (objectively assessed in-clinic) and engagement with self-regulation behaviors (captured via Bluetooth scales and self-monitoring app). Treatment arm was included as a covariate in all outcome analyses. Descriptive statistics were computed to capture enrollment rates. GLM was used to compare men and women on percent weight change at 3-months, days of self-weighing, and days of dietary self-monitoring. Results Young men represented 17% of enrolled participants. At 3-months, men manifested greater weight losses compared to women (-4.8±5.1% vs. -2.5±4.1%, p=.008). Over the course of the 3-months, engagement with self-regulation behaviors was similar for men and women; men had a similar number of days of self-weighing (46.77±24.6 vs. 47.42±24.0, p=.88) and a lower number of days for tracking diet (36.87±24.3 vs. 43.42±22.6, p=.15) relative to women. Conclusion While enrollment was low among young men in this technology-driven BWL program, those men who enrolled lost double the weight compared to women—even though engagement with self-monitoring behaviors was similar or lower. These results suggest that a low touch and primarily self-guided weight loss program may be sufficient to produce clinically meaningful weight loss among young men.     Study of Fish Weight Loss in Solar Dryer Across Different Agro-Ecological Zones of Nigeria

    Drying sessions were conducted across Nigeria to study the interaction between fish weight loss and the meteorological parameters. Correlation analyses using weight loss values show that latitude is strongly related (r =+0.96) to weight loss of fish inside the dryer while altitude had a weak relationship (r = +0.24) with weight loss. The results show that New Bussa recorded more weight loss of fish than Jos, despite their uniform latitude. Weight loss records in Jos, was however better than those of Warri and Ibadan

    This study sought to find a correlation between Facebook usage and exercise and diet habits among college-age females. A review of literature has shown the prevalence of eating disorders on college campuses and the pressures directly associated with these statistics. Eighty surveys were collected in order to measure both qualitative and quantitative data concerning the participants Facebook, eating, and dieting habits. Results revealed a strong drive among these females to stay thin through the use of diet and exercise habits, along with a correlation between viewing Facebook photos and the urge to workout. Further research on this subject should focus on the potential danger caused by extreme Facebook usage

    Native American Weight Loss Movement: Pilot Test of a Culturally Tailored Weight Loss Program for American Indians

    American Indians (AIs) have higher rates of obesity than other racial/ethnic groups, placing them at heightened risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain cancers. Culturally appropriate weight loss interventions may be the key to reducing risk. The most successful program used in AI communities has been the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), which limits enrollment to individuals with a clinical diagnosis of pre-diabetes. The purpose of this pilot project was to modify and culturally tailor a weight loss intervention to AI communities in Kansas to improve weight loss related behaviors among those who do not qualify for the DPP. The Native American Weight Loss Movement (NAWLM) was developed from 2012-2014 using an iterative process with 4 sequential modifications to the program. Group 1 received a slightly modified version of the DPP that was originally tailored to African Americans. Each group received an improved program based on modifications from the previous group. Our analysis shows 36.1% (95% CI: 25.7, 47.5) of all participants (n=72) lost weight; a majority (63.9%, 95% CI: 52.8-75.0) maintained weight, gained weight, or dropped out. Among individuals who completed the program (n=34), 76.5% lost weight (95% CI: 61.4, 91.5). These individuals lost an average of 2.98% body weight (95% CI: 1.58, 4.37), with 6 participants losing \u3e7% body weight. While most participants who completed the program lost weight, more research is needed to determine factors that discourage drop-out and promote behavioral changes. NAWLM shows promise as a weight loss program for AIs who do not qualify for the DPP

    Overnight weight loss: relationship with sleep structure and heart rate variability

    Background: Weight loss can be caused by a loss of body mass due to metabolism and by water loss as unsensible water loss, sweating, or excretion in feces and urine. Although weight loss during sleep is a well-known phenomenon, it has not yet been studied in relation to sleep structure or autonomic tonus during sleep. Our study is proposed to be a first step in assessing the relationship between overnight weight loss, sleep structure, and HRV (heart rate variability) parameters.Methods: Twenty-five healthy volunteers received a 487 kcal meal and 200 ml water before experiment. Volunteers were weighed before and after polysomnography. Absolute and relative weight indices were calculated. Time and frequency domain analysis of heart rate variability was assessed during stages 2, 4, and REM. Nonparametric linear regression analysis was performed between night weight loss parameters, polysomnographic, and HRV ariables. Results: HF correlated positively with weight loss during stage 4. Slow wave sleep duration correlated positively with weight loss and weight loss rate. The duration of Stage 2 correlated negatively with absolute and relative weight loss. Conclusions: Weight loss during sleep is dependent upon sleep stage duration and sleep autonomic tonus. Slow-wave sleep and sleep parasympathetic tonus may be important for weight homeostasis

    Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by an abnormal pain regulation. Widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance are the prevalent symptoms. When unusual symptoms are overbearingly predominant at clinical presentation, the diagnosis becomes challenging. We report on the case of a patient with fibromyalgia, who presented with dysphagia, odynophagia, and glossodynia as prevalent symptoms. Difficulty in swallowing gradually developed over a month prior hospitalization, and worsened progressively so that nourishment and fluid intake were impeded. Because anemia with mild iron deficiency was found, esophagogastroduodenoscopy was performed, but no lesions were seen in the upper digestive tract. Levels of zinc and vitamin B12 were normal. Intense pain at pelvis and the inferior limbs, which was at a first glance referred to as osteoarthrosis, associated with oral symptoms and feeling of being in the clouds allowed us to diagnose fibromyalgia. Amitriptyline was used, with relief of symptoms. Although oropharyngeal symptoms were occasionally reported in fibromyalgia, they are often overlooked. The present case, therefore, testifies the need to consider the diagnosis of fibromyalgia when the patient presents with such symptoms that cannot be readily explained on other grounds
