Solvent Deactivation of Mimosa Webworm Larval Webbing (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)

    Get PDF
Untreated larval webbing of the mimosa webworm, Homadaula anisocentra stimulated oviposition. Six-week-old webbing was as active as two-day-old webbing. Stimulatory activity of webbing was lost after rinsing with highly polar solvents, but not after rinsing with nonpolar solvents. Addition of the polar solvent rinses did not induce activity in other substrates nor restore activity to rinsed webbing. No differences in structure were found in a scanning electron microscope examination of unrinsed webbing and webbing rinsed with solvents of varying polarity

Webbing and orchestration. Two interrelated views on digital tools in mathematics education

    Get PDF
The integration of digital tools in mathematics education is considered both promising and problematic. To deal with this issue, notions of webbing and instrumental orchestration are developed. However, the two seemed to be disconnected, and having different cultural and theoretical roots. In this article, we investigate the distinct and joint journeys of these two theoretical perspectives. Taking some key moments in recent history as points of de- parture, we conclude that the two perspectives share an importance attributed to digital tools, and that initial differences, such as different views on the role of digital tools and the role of the teacher, have become more nuances. The two approaches share future chal- lenges to the organization of teachers'collaborative work and their use of digital resources.Comment: Teaching Mathematics and its Applications (2014) to be complete

THE EFFECT OF WORD WEBBING TECHNIQUE ON THE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY

    Get PDF
The objective of this study is to find out whether the students’ vocabulary mastery thaught by word webbing technique is better than without word webbing technique. The method of this research was quantitative with the experimental research design. The population of this study was the 48 students  at seventh grade of SMP Swasta Galih Agung with two groups, experimental class consists of 21 students and control class consists of 27 students. The researchers taught the experimental class by using word webbing technique and control class taught without using word webbing technique. To collect the data the researchers used vocabulary test in multiple choice as the instrument. The post-test was given by the researchers aftergiving the treatment. The data were calculated by using t-test formula with the degree freedom (df) = 46 at the level of significance 0.05. it was found that tcount value was 10,491 and t table was 2,000. After analyzing the data, it was found that t count is higher than t table. It means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It can be concluded that the students’ vocabulary mastery taught by word webbing technique is better than without word webbing technique

The Fish Funnel: A Trawl Modification to Reduce Fish Escapement

    Get PDF
In the Gulf of Mexico there is a need to assess the potential of underutilized fish resource stocks before a commercial fishery develops. Standard sampling trawls used in the Gulf are ineffective for sampling the resource, so larger, high opening, bottom trawls have been introduced. The larger trawls are more effective, but most of the faster swimming fish species are able to escape these nets, especially during haul back. To reduce fish escapement, webbing panels, attached inside the trawls ahead of the cod ends, were tested. Initial tests were conducted with two single panel designs--a fish flap and a "floppa." Neither design reduced fish escapement. The floppa distorted the trawl webbing and actually increased fish escapement. A multi-panel conical funnel design (the fish funnel) was tested and found to increase fish retention by trapping the fish after they passed through it. When used in combination with a technique known as pulsing the trawl, the fish funnel substantially increased trawl catch rates with no indication of fish escapement

THE EFFECT OF WEBBING TECHNIQUE ON THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT AT SMP NEGERI 7 JEMBER IN THE 2012/2013 ACADEMIC YEAR

Abstract : Based on the literature reviews, webbing technique is an effective technique in teaching students’ reading comprehension achievement. The research on the effect of webbing technique on the students’ reading comprehension achievement was carried out to know whether or not there is a significant effect of webbing technique on the students’ reading comprehension achievement. A quasi experimental research by using Posttest Only Control Group Design was implemented to test the effect of webbing technique on the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The result revealed that the students in experimental group out performed their fellow counterparts in the control group. In that, they have shown better comprehension in reading descriptive text. This is likely due to the implementation of webbing technique which facilitates understanding. Key Words : Webbing technique, reading comprehension, effect

Fermi Surface as the Driving Mechanism for Helical Antiferromagnetic Ordering in Gd-Y Alloys

The first direct experimental evidence for the Fermi surface (FS) driving the helical antiferromagnetic ordering in a gadolinium-yttrium alloy is reported. The presence of a FS sheet capable of nesting is revealed, and the nesting vector associated with the sheet is found to be in excellent agreement with the periodicity of the helical ordering.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

The effect of military load carriage on ground reaction forces

    Get PDF
Load carriage is an inevitable part of military life both during training and operations. Loads carried are frequently as high as 60% bodyweight, and this increases injury risk. In the military, load is carried in a backpack (also referred to as a Bergen) and webbing, these combined form a load carriage system (LCS). A substantial body of literature exists recording the physiological effects of load carriage; less is available regarding the biomechanics. Previous biomechanical studies have generally been restricted to loads of 20% and 40% of bodyweight, usually carried in the backpack alone. The effect of rifle carriage on gait has also received little or no attention in the published literature. This is despite military personnel almost always carrying a rifle during load carriage. In this study, 15 male participants completed 8 conditions: military boot, rifle, webbing 8 and 16 kg, backpack 16 kg and LCS 24, 32 and 40 kg. Results showed that load added in 8 kg increments elicited a proportional increase in vertical and anteroposterior ground reaction force (GRF) parameters. Rifle carriage significantly increased the impact peak and mediolateral impulse compared to the boot condition. These effects may be the result of changes to the vertical and horizontal position of the body's centre of mass, caused by the restriction of natural arm swing patterns. Increased GRFs, particularly in the vertical axis, have been positively linked to overuse injuries. Therefore, the biomechanical analysis of load carriage is important in aiding our understanding of injuries associated with military load carriage
