Extending an eco-evolutionary understanding of biofilm-formation at the air-liquid interface to community biofilms

Growing bacterial populations diversify to produce a number of competing lineages. In the Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25 model system, Wrinkly Spreader mutant lineages, capable of colonising the air-liquid interface of static microcosms by biofilm-formation, rapidly appear in diversifying populations with a fitness advantage over the ancestral wild-type strain. Similarly, a biofilm is rapidly produced by a community containing many biofilm-competent members, and selection by serial transfer of biofilm samples across microcosms results in a gradually changing community structure. Both the adaptive radiation producing Wrinkly Spreaders and the succession of biofilm communities in these static microcosms can be understood through evolutionary ecology in which ecological interactions and evolutionary processes are combined. Such eco-evolutionary dynamics are especially important for bacteria, as rapid growth, high population densities and strong selection in the context of infections can lead to fast changes in disease progression and resistance phenotypes, while similar changes in community function may also affect many microbially-mediated biotechnological and industrial processes. Evolutionary ecology provides an understanding of why bacterial biofilms are so prevalent and why they are such a successful colonisation strategy, and it can be directly linked to molecular analyses to understand the importance of pathways and responses involved in biofilm-formation

’n Historiografiese verkenning van watergeskiedenis

A historiographical survey of water history In this article historiographical information is utilised to indicate the potential of water as a subject of historical research. In particular applicable practical needs in contemporary society that pose a challenge to the historian to look at the past from a different perspective, are emphasised. Attention is given to the socio-economic and political aspects of the hydrosphere and areas in which historians can render a valuable contribution. The history of water is noted for its interdisciplinary character. A variety of disciplines in the natural sciences and humanities are of value to the historian. Ultimately, when relevant questions are posed within the framework of historical water research, it is clear that the field has considerable potential to stimulate transdisciplinary scientific work

Ons Kultuurtaak in die Republiek

Na 5e Oktober het die Afrikaner ’n nuwe staatkundige bedeling betree wat sy voltrekking sal vind in ’n Republiek. Dit is ’n gebeurtenis van die grootste betekenis: vir die eerste keer sal die Afrikanerdom in sy wordingsproses van drie eeue as geheel tot ’n eenheid verbind wees in ’n staatsvorm van sy eie, al is dit dan miskien grootliks weens die naam Republiek en onder die eie, vrye, selfgekose staatshoof. Hierdie omstandigheid stel aan die volk ’n groter kultuurtaak en eis dienooreenkomstig ’n groter verantwoordelikheid

Geografiese invloede op ons beskawingspatroon

Die opskrif van hierdie lesing lui: „Geografiese invloede op die Suid-Afrikaanse Beskawingspatroon”. Onmiddellik laat dit die vraag ontstaan wat ’n geografiese invloed nou eintlik is: hoe word dit onderskei van bv. ’n geologiese of sê m aar ’n plantkundige invloed, en is daar nou werklik iets soos ’n geografiese invloed? Met ’n lang bespreking van hierdie vrae wil ek u nie oorval nie: laat my volstaan met die verklaring dat ek vir die doeleindes van hierdie beskouing uitgegaan het van die standpunt dat die geografie die verhouding bestudeer tussen die mens en sy omgewing en dat ek as geografiese in­ vloede geneem het alle invloede wat kan uitgaan van die fisiese omgewing in die breedste sin van die woord

Die welt ist unsre woiinung nicht! Nuanses van ’n paar vertalings

In die Totiusjaar het die woordc Die wêreld is ons woning nie ’n refrein geword, soos dit as kernsin in sy poësie ook op die gra- niettablet by Jo Roos se beeld van Totius, wat in Potchefstroom opgerig is, verewig is. Telkens wannecr daar oor Totius gepraat word, klink dit ook op; dit is byna asof ’n mens dit moet vasgryp en in die hart bêre om iets van die grootsheid van die eenvoud van die digter en mens Totius te kan vashou. Daarom is dit ’n ware vreugde om te ontdek dat Totius ook Duits ‘praat’ in die vertalings wat daar van enkele van sy gedigte bestaan. Daarin word die refrein ’n vreugdewoord: ,,Die Welt ist unsre Wohnung nicht!”. Helmut Erbe het reeds in 1959 ’n groep Afrikaanse ge­ digte in Duits vertaal en daarmee Afrikaans as taal van die poësie vir ’n groter leserskring toeganklik gemaak1)
