Feline prophylactic dental care and dental problems : a survey study of cat ownerâs knowledge as well as veterinary clinics information intermediation
Periodontal diseases and dental problems are regularly occurring among felines. Gingivitis and tooth resorption are examples of such problems. To prevent these problems, it is of utmost importance to perform regular prophylactic dental care, for example; toothbrushing or the use of dental diets. Animal health care personnel have an important role in relaying information within the subject to cat owners. This is to increase knowledge and thereby improve the frequency and execution of dental prophylactic care.
The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to examine the amount of self-estimated knowledge Swedish cat owners have about dental health, dental diseases and prophylactic dental care in cats. The purpose of the study was also to examine whether animal health care personnel provide information about dental diseases, symptoms and prophylactic dental care for cats. Two survey studies were conducted where two different questionnaires were sent out, one to cat owners and one to personnel at animal hospitals and animal clinics. The literature review provides a background to the subject of common dental diseases as well as which prophylactic measures can be used to avoid periodontal diseases.
The results from the two surveys revealed that the knowledge cat owners have regarding dental problems and symptoms correspond to the information that animal health care personnel convey. The results also showed that roughly half of the cat owners performed dental prophylactic care for their cats, where toothbrushing was the most frequently used method. Toothbrushing was also the method which most respondents within the animal health care personnel recommended. The results showed that the information mediation between healthcare personnel and cat owners, for the most part, is carried out orally. The surveys also showed that there could be improvement regarding communication and compliance between the parties
Dental home care in dogs
Toothbrushing is the best available method in remaining or restore dental health in dogs. This report treats different aspects about toothbrushing and other dental home care treatments in dogs. Questions like why the dogâs teeth should be brushed, what effects toothbrushing have on dental health and how the teeth can be brushed are treated. Furthermore complements to toothbrushing are treated, the options and their effects. Finally there is a part about guidance to petowners. If the dog does not receive any dental home care at all after dental scaling, the oral health soon gets back to the same level as before the treatment. If the owner does not care for the dogâs teeth, diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis can proceed and give rise to several complications. To give petowners the right information and make sure they follow the advices is thereby an important task for the animal nursing staff. In connection with this report an inquiry was made where petowners were asked about dental home care in their dog
The most common everyday diseases in dogs include overweight and periodontitis, and studies show
that veterinary visits for these diseases have increased. The purpose of the present study was to
describe parts of the scientific knowledge regarding overweight and periodontitis in dogs and, via a
questionnaire study, investigate the Swedish dog ownersâ knowledge about these diseases. The survey was created with the digital tool Netigate and the target group was dog owners over 18 years
old. A total of 564 responses were collected by the survey that included pictures of dogs with different body condition.
The literature study showed that there are several risk factors linked to both the dog and its owner
which can lead to an increased risk of overweight. It also showed that evaluation of overweight in
dogs can be performed with semi-objective methods such as Body condition scoring (BCS) which
the dog owners can perform themselves. Overweight in dogs has consequences such as shortened
lifespan, reduced quality of life, development of chronic diseases and difficulties of clinical examinations and surgeries. There are risk factors for periodontitis linked to the dogâs age and breed, and
the preferred way to prevent the disease is through dental care. Dogs who suffer from periodontitis
can be at risk of tooth loss and reduced quality of life.
The survey showed that the majority of respondents knew that overweight is a serious health problem in dogs but not as many were aware of the most serious consequences of being overweight.
Many of the respondents did not know what BCS is and the survey showed that the respondents had
difficulties in correctly assessing the dog's body condition. The normal-weight dog (BCS 5) was
classified as underweight and the slightly overweight or overweight dogs (BCS 6-7) were classified
as normal body condition. The respondents showed differences (P <0.0001) in how well they assessed BCS of the different dogs (BCS 5-8) were they most frequently identified the obese dog (BCS
8) and least frequently identified the normal weight dog (BCS 5). The age group 61 years or older
had significant difficulties (P = 0.04) in correctly assessing the normal weight dog compared to
group mean. The survey showed that periodontitis was believed to be tooth loss by the majority of
respondents, which is the Swedish name for the disease. The respondents knew that the disease can
be prevented by brushing the dogâs teeth and 75% knew that it should be performed once daily. The
respondents estimated their own level of knowledge regarding periodontitis and overweight in the
end of the survey. A positive association was observed between self-assed knowledge and the number of owned dogs (P <0.0001, R square 0.035). If respondents that had owned many dogs also had
better knowledge was tested with one question in BCS assessment but an association could not be
confirmed.
This study shows that there is a weight blindness in dog owners which needs to be addressed so that
slight overweight, or overweight dogs are not considered to be in normal body condition. Knowledge
about what BCS is and how it is performed needs to be disseminated and taught, and information
regarding the most serious consequences of overweight needs to be spread so that dog owners understand the seriousness of the disease. Animal health personnel need to inform about what periodontitis actually is and how preventive work can be done. Further studies should investigate the
reasons behind the respondents' absence of knowledge of those everyday diseases. Information to
dog owners should consider that different age groups may have different types of knowledge and
that the perceived knowledge of the dog owner can be influenced by how many dogs the person has
owned

We choose to revise the need of dental care in horses. How important is the dental care for our horseÂŽs use and for their health?
The objective of this work was to see if there is a difference between Swedish veterinaries and educated horse dentists opinion concerning horse dental care. As horse owners, we have experienced that there is a conflict between the opinions of these two occupational groups. Some veterinarians say that there is a tendency to use to much treatments or instruments in horses mouths, while some horse dentists says that there is not enough treatments done in horsesÂŽ mouths. Which opinion is right? What measures are important to do in horsesÂŽ mouths? What risks are there if there is too much treatment done in horse's mouths?
We asked eight questions to five veterinarians and eight questions to five educated horse dentists about how important horse dental care is. We wanted to know if there really was anyone who thought that there is no need for treatments in horsesÂŽ mouths. We wanted to create a picture of their experiences from their daily work. The questions we asked were if horses do need dental care, how often the teeth need to be floated, if it is necessary to remove wolf teeth and the most common affections in horsesÂŽ mouths. Most of the questions had different options to answer and we also wanted a motivation to some of the answers.
We were a little surprised to the answers that we got. The answers showed that there is not that big a difference between vets and dentists. The majority thought that dental care for horses is important, and that they really need it. Regular checks are recommended to make sure that there are no emerging problems. Most of the horses do need some kind of dental care from time to time. In the case of wolf teeth removal, the horse dentists and the vetÂŽs differed; most of the veterinarians did not think that wolf teeth should be routinely removed, while all of the dentists thought that wolf teeth should be removed in preventive intent.
hÀsttandlÀkare i deras Äsikter angÄende hÀsttandvÄrd.
