    Superquadrics for segmentation and modeling range data

    We present a novel approach to reliable and efficient recovery of part-descriptions in terms of superquadric models from range data. We show that superquadrics can directly be recovered from unsegmented data, thus avoiding any presegmentation steps (e.g., in terms of surfaces). The approach is based on the recover-andselect paradigm. We present several experiments on real and synthetic range images, where we demonstrate the stability of the results with respect to viewpoint and noise

    Superquadrics and Angle-Preserving Transformations

    Over the past 20 years, a great deal of interest has developed in the use of computer graphics and numerical methods for three-dimensional design. Significant progress in geometric modeling is being made, predominantly for objects best represented by lists of edges, faces, and vertices. One long-term goal of this work is a unified mathematical formalism, to form the basis of an interactive and intuitive design environment in which designers can simulate three-dimensional scenes with shading and texture, produce usable design images, verify numerical machining-control commands, and set up finite-element meshwork for structural and dynamic analysis. A new collection of smooth parametric objects and a new set of three-dimensional parametric modifiers show potential for helping to achieve this goal. The superquadric primitives and angle-preserving transformations extend the traditional geometric primitives-quadric surfaces and parametric patches-used in existing design packages, producing a new spectrum of flexible forms. Their chief advantage is that they allow complex solids and surfaces to be constructed and altered easily from a few interactive parameters

    A perception and manipulation system for collecting rock samples

    An important part of a planetary exploration mission is to collect and analyze surface samples. As part of the Carnegie Mellon University Ambler Project, researchers are investigating techniques for collecting samples using a robot arm and a range sensor. The aim of this work is to make the sample collection operation fully autonomous. Described here are the components of the experimental system, including a perception module that extracts objects of interest from range images and produces models of their shapes, and a manipulation module that enables the system to pick up the objects identified by the perception module. The system was tested on a small testbed using natural terrain

The grasping method relies on real-time superquadric (SQ) representation of partial view objects and incomplete object modelling, well suited for unknown symmetric objects in cluttered scenarios which is followed by optimized antipodal grasping. The incomplete object models are processed through a mirroring algorithm that assumes symmetry to first create an approximate complete model and then fit for SQ representation. The grasping algorithm is designed for maximum force balance and stability, taking advantage of the quick retrieval of dimension and surface curvature information from the SQ parameters. The pose of the SQs with respect to the direction of gravity is calculated and used together with the parameters of the SQs and specification of the gripper, to select the best direction of approach and contact points. The SQ fitting method has been tested on custom datasets containing objects in isolation as well as in clutter. The grasping algorithm is evaluated on a PR2 robot and real time results are presented. Initial results indicate that though the method is based on simplistic shape information, it outperforms other learning based grasping algorithms that also work in clutter in terms of time-efficiency and accuracy.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    On-orbit assembly using superquadric potential fields

    The autonomous on-orbit assembly of a large space structure is presented using a method based on superquadric artificial potential fields. The final configuration of the elements which form the structure is represented as the minimum of some attractive potential field. Each element of the structure is then considered as presenting an obstacle to the others using a superquadric potential field attached to the body axes of the element. A controller is developed which ensures that the global potential field decreases monotonically during the assembly process. An error quaternion representation is used to define both the attractive and superquadric obstacle potentials allowing the final configuration of the elements to be defined through both relative position and orientation. Through the use of superquadric potentials, a wide range of geometric objects can be represented using a common formalism, while collision avoidance can make use of both translational and rotation maneuvers to reduce total maneuver cost for the assembly process
