    Structure from motion (SFM) photogrammetry

    Topographic data measurement is a fundamental aspect of many geomorphic research applications, particularly those including landform monitoring and investigation of changes in topography. However, most surveying techniques require relatively expensive technologies or specialized user supervision. Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetric technology lightens both these constraints by allowing the use of consumer grade digital cameras and highly automated data processing, which can be free to use. SfM photogrammetry therefore offers the possibility of fast, automated and low-cost acquisition of 3-D data, which has inevitably created great interest amongst the geomorphological community. In this contribution, the basic concepts of SfM photogrammetry are presented, whilst recognising its heritage. A few examples are employed to illustrate the potential of SfM applications for geomorphological research. In particular, SfM photogrammetry offers to geomorphologists a tool for high-resolution characterisation of 3-D forms at a range of scales and for change detection purposes. The high level of automation of SfM data processing creates both opportunities and threats, particularly because user control tends to focus upon the final product visually rather than upon inherent data quality. Accordingly, this contribution seeks to guide potential new users in successfully applying SfM for a range of geomorphic studies

One of the most outstanding changes is the spread of the photogrammetric systems based on algorithms referred to as Structure from Motion (SfM) in contrast with the traditional stereoscopic pairs. Nevertheless, the availability of important collections of stereoscopic registers collected during past decades invites us to explore the possibilities for re-using these photographs in order to generate new multimedia products, especially due to the fact that many of the documented elements have been largely altered or even disappeared. This article analyses an example of application to the re-use of a collection of photographs from the palaeontological site of Ambrona (Soria, Spain). More specifically, different pieces of software based on Structure from Motion (SfM) algorithms for the generation of 3D models with photographic textures are tested and some derived products such as orthoimages, video or applications of Augmented Reality (AR) are presented.[ES] Las herramientas de modelado 3D a partir de imágenes fotográficas han experimentado avances muy significativos en los últimos años. Uno de los más destacados corresponde a la generalización de los sistemas fotogramétricos basados en los algoritmos denominados Structure from Motion (SfM) sobre los proyectos de documentación tradicional basados en pares estereoscópicos. La existencia de importantes colecciones de registros estereoscópicos realizados durante las décadas anteriores invita a explorar las posibilidades de reutilización de estos registros para la obtención de productos multimedia actuales, máxime cuando algunos de los elementos documentados han sufrido grandes modificaciones o incluso desaparecido. En el presente artículo se analiza la reutilización de colecciones fotográficas de yacimientos paleontológicos mediante un ejemplo centrado en el yacimiento de Ambrona (Soria, España).     On-barn pig weight estimation based on body measurements by structure-from-motion (SfM)

    Information on the body shape of pigs is a key indicator to monitor their performance and health and to control or predict their market weight. Manual measurements are among the most common ways to obtain an indication of animal growth. However, this approach is laborious and difficult, and it may be stressful for both the pigs and the stockman. The present paper proposes the implementation of a Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry approach as a new tool for on-barn animal reconstruction applications. This is possible also to new software tools allowing automatic estimation of camera parameters during the reconstruction process even without a preliminary calibration phase. An analysis on pig body 3D SfM characterization is here proposed, carried out under different conditions in terms of number of camera poses and animal movements. The work takes advantage of the total reconstructed surface as reference index to quantify the quality of the achieved 3D reconstruction, showing how as much as 80% of the total animal area can be characterized

    Learning Single-Image Depth from Videos using Quality Assessment Networks

    Depth estimation from a single image in the wild remains a challenging problem. One main obstacle is the lack of high-quality training data for images in the wild. In this paper we propose a method to automatically generate such data through Structure-from-Motion (SfM) on Internet videos. The core of this method is a Quality Assessment Network that identifies high-quality reconstructions obtained from SfM. Using this method, we collect single-view depth training data from a large number of YouTube videos and construct a new dataset called YouTube3D. Experiments show that YouTube3D is useful in training depth estimation networks and advances the state of the art of single-view depth estimation in the wild

    Fast and Accurate Camera Covariance Computation for Large 3D Reconstruction

    Estimating uncertainty of camera parameters computed in Structure from Motion (SfM) is an important tool for evaluating the quality of the reconstruction and guiding the reconstruction process. Yet, the quality of the estimated parameters of large reconstructions has been rarely evaluated due to the computational challenges. We present a new algorithm which employs the sparsity of the uncertainty propagation and speeds the computation up about ten times \wrt previous approaches. Our computation is accurate and does not use any approximations. We can compute uncertainties of thousands of cameras in tens of seconds on a standard PC. We also demonstrate that our approach can be effectively used for reconstructions of any size by applying it to smaller sub-reconstructions.Comment: ECCV 201

    La epigrafía romana de Augusta Emérita más allá del Museo: digitalización, modelización 3D y difusión a través de dispositivos móviles

    Este trabajo ofrece la experiencia de innovación científica de digitalizar y modelar en 3D un conjunto de cincuenta y nueve inscripciones romanas del Museo Nacional de Arte Romano (Mérida, Badajoz), a través de una tecnología de bajo coste, basada en el modelado digital de imágenes en movimiento (Structure from Motion, SfM). Su difusión a través de internet y el desarrollo de una aplicación propietaria para su visualización en smartphones y tablets con sistema operativo Android. Los resultados obtenidos permiten comprobar el potencial de estas tecnologías para incrementar la visibilidad y difusión del patrimonio arqueológico que se conserva en los museos. This paper offers the experience of scientific innovation of digitizing and 3D modeling a collection of fifty-nine Roman inscriptions from the National Museum of Roman Art (Mérida, Badajoz) through a low-cost technology based on Structure from Motion (SfM). The project includes the dissemination through the Internet and the development of a proprietary application for viewing on smartphones and tablets with Android mobile operating system. The results confirm the potential of these technologies to increase the visibility and dissemination of archaeological heritage preserved in museums
