    Smart Exposition Rooms: The Ambient Intelligence View

    We introduce our research on smart environments, in particular research on smart meeting rooms and investigate how research approaches here can be used in the context of smart museum environments. We distinguish the identification of domain knowledge, its use in sensory perception, its use in interpretation and modeling of events and acts in smart environments and we have some observations on off-line browsing and on-line remote participation in events in smart environments. It is argued that large-scale European research in the area of ambient intelligence will be an impetus to the research and development of smart galleries and museum spaces

    Enhancing smart environments with mobile robots

    Sensor networks are becoming popular nowadays in the development of smart environments. Heavily relying on static sensor and actuators, though, such environments usually lacks of versatility regarding the provided services and interaction capabilities. Here we present a framework for smart environments where a service robot is included within the sensor network acting as a mobile sensor and/or actuator. Our framework integrates on-the-shelf technologies to ensure its adaptability to a variety of sensor technologies and robotic software.     On-line Human Activity Recognition from Audio and Home Automation Sensors: comparison of sequential and non-sequential models in realistic Smart Homes

    International audienceAutomatic human Activity Recognition (AR) is an important process for the provision of context-aware services in smart spaces such as voice-controlled smart homes. In this paper, we present an on-line Activities of Daily Living (ADL) recognition method for automatic identification within homes in which multiple sensors, actuators and automation equipment coexist, including audio sensors. Three sequence-based models are presented and compared: a Hidden Markov Model (HMM), Conditional Random Fields (CRF) and a sequential Markov Logic Network (MLN). These methods have been tested in two real Smart Homes thanks to experiments involving more than 30 participants. Their results were compared to those of three non-sequential models: a Support Vector Machine (SVM), a Random Forest (RF) and a non-sequential MLN. This comparative study shows that CRF gave the best results for on-line activity recognition from non-visual, audio and home automation sensors

    Meetings and Meeting Modeling in Smart Environments

    In this paper we survey our research on smart meeting rooms and its relevance for augmented reality meeting support and virtual reality generation of meetings in real time or off-line. The research reported here forms part of the European 5th and 6th framework programme projects multi-modal meeting manager (M4) and augmented multi-party interaction (AMI). Both projects aim at building a smart meeting environment that is able to collect multimodal captures of the activities and discussions in a meeting room, with the aim to use this information as input to tools that allow real-time support, browsing, retrieval and summarization of meetings. Our aim is to research (semantic) representations of what takes place during meetings in order to allow generation, e.g. in virtual reality, of meeting activities (discussions, presentations, voting, etc.). Being able to do so also allows us to look at tools that provide support during a meeting and at tools that allow those not able to be physically present during a meeting to take part in a virtual way. This may lead to situations where the differences between real meeting participants, human-controlled virtual participants and (semi-) autonomous virtual participants disappear

    dWatch: a Personal Wrist Watch for Smart Environments

    Intelligent environments, such as smart homes or domotic systems, have the potential to support people in many of their ordinary activities, by allowing complex control strategies for managing various capabilities of a house or a building: lights, doors, temperature, power and energy, music, etc. Such environments, typically, provide these control strategies by means of computers, touch screen panels, mobile phones, tablets, or In-House Displays. An unobtrusive and typically wearable device, like a bracelet or a wrist watch, that lets users perform various operations in their homes and to receive notifications from the environment, could strenghten the interaction with such systems, in particular for those people not accustomed to computer systems (e.g., elderly) or in contexts where they are not in front of a screen. Moreover, such wearable devices reduce the technological gap introduced in the environment by home automation systems, thus permitting a higher level of acceptance in the daily activities and improving the interaction between the environment and its inhabitants.     Meetings in smart environments : implications of progressing technology

    Meetings are often inefficiĂŤnt. They are numerous and unavoidable. If we look at the technological developments in this area we quickly see that along with the introduction of the microphone and the data projector, the execution of a meeting for the participants has become much easier. Yet there are still many aspects of a meeting that can be improved, where technology in its current stage has not contributed much. There is for instance hardly any technology that is able to autonomously interpret, or analyze, aspects of the meeting process. An automatic analysis of a meeting could provide valuable insights for both the attendants, as well as for those interested parties who could not attend.\ud These insights hypothetically could in turn lead again to more successful meeting processes. It is, for example, often the case that one or two dominant participants can monopolize a complete meeting in a way that they make it impossible for others to contribute. Another example is that the argumentation that has been put forward and that led to a certain decision is often forgotten and lost, not to mention that during a discussion just one line of argumentation can be in the center of attention.\ud It is investigated to what extent the latest technological developments can provide automatic insights into both, so-called higher-level meeting phenomena. To enable the automatic recognition, a descriptive and computationally accessible model has been created for the phenomenon of dominance hierarchy as well as for argument structure. Whereas the model for a dominance hierarchy did not require more than a ranking of the participants, the model that describes the argumentation structure requires interpretation of the individual contributions, as well as the knowledge of how to label contributions in the context of the discussion

    Recent advances in networking, handheld computing and sensor technologies have driven forward research towards the realisation of Mark Weiser's dream of calm and ubiquitous computing (variously called pervasive computing, ambient computing, active spaces, the disappearing computer or context-aware computing). In turn, this has led to the emergence of smart environments as one significant facet of research in this domain. A smart environment, or space, is a region of the real world that is extensively equipped with sensors, actuators and computing components [1]. In effect the smart space becomes a part of a larger information system: with all actions within the space potentially affecting the underlying computer applications, which may themselves affect the space through the actuators. Such smart environments have tremendous potential within many application areas to improve the utility of a space.     SAT based Enforcement of Domotic Effects in Smart Environments

    The emergence of economically viable and efficient sensor technology provided impetus to the development of smart devices (or appliances). Modern smart environments are equipped with a multitude of smart devices and sensors, aimed at delivering intelligent services to the users of smart environments. The presence of these diverse smart devices has raised a major problem of managing environments. A rising solution to the problem is the modeling of user goals and intentions, and then interacting with the environments using user defined goals. `Domotic Effects' is a user goal modeling framework, which provides Ambient Intelligence (AmI) designers and integrators with an abstract layer that enables the definition of generic goals in a smart environment, in a declarative way, which can be used to design and develop intelligent applications. The high-level nature of domotic effects also allows the residents to program their personal space as they see fit: they can define different achievement criteria for a particular generic goal, e.g., by defining a combination of devices having some particular states, by using domain-specific custom operators. This paper describes an approach for the automatic enforcement of domotic effects in case of the Boolean application domain, suitable for intelligent monitoring and control in domotic environments. Effect enforcement is the ability to determine device configurations that can achieve a set of generic goals (domotic effects). The paper also presents an architecture to implement the enforcement of Boolean domotic effects, and results obtained from carried out experiments prove the feasibility of the proposed approach and highlight the responsiveness of the implemented effect enforcement architectur

    Characterizing smart environments as interactive and collective platforms: A review of the key behaviors of responsive architecture

    Since architect Nicholas Negroponte first proposed a vision of responsive architecture smart environments have been widely investigated, especially in the fields of computer science and engineering. Despite growing interest in the topic, a comprehensive review of research about smart environments from the architectural perspective is largely missing. In order to provide a formal understanding of smart environments in architecture, this paper conducts a systematic literature review of scholarly sources over the last decade, focusing on four related subjects: (1) responsive architecture, (2) kinetic architecture, (3) adaptive architecture and (4) intelligent buildings. Through this review, the paper identifies and examines interactive and collective behaviors in smart environments, thereby contributing to defining the properties of creative, smart spaces in the contemporary digital ecosystem. In addition, this research offers a means of systematically characterizing and constructing smart environments as interactive and collective platforms, enabling occupants to sense, experience and understand smart spaces
