Etymology of the earwigfly, Merope tuber Newman (Mecoptera: Meropeidae): Simply dull or just inscrutable?

    Get PDF
The naturalist Edward Newman did not provide an etymology for the mecopteran Merope tuber when he described it in 1838. In 1872 Asa Fitch asserted that the genus was named after Merope one of the Pleiades sisters of Greek mythology; however, he provided no reason for his assumption. We researched several etymological alternatives. We concur with Fitch and conclude that Newman did indeed name the genus Merope after the dullest of the Pleiades sisters

The Educational System in Romania: An Overview of How Communism Has Influenced Current Aspects and Programs

    Get PDF
Romania’s history under the influence of Communism has had lasting effects on all aspects of daily life, from politics to economics to education. Many of the philosophies imbedded in the fabric of Romanian society during the Communist regime under leaders such as Ion Antonescu Nicolae Ceausescu are still affecting Romanians today and particularly the decisions made regarding schooling and the system of education in Romania in terms of curriculum, instructional methods, and standards. Involvement in the Holocaust was often downplayed but now the goal is to circulate truth as to the scope and depth of connection with the Nazi principles. Perceptions of minorities, such as the gypsy Roma people, as well as those diagnosed as Special Education, stem from ideals communicated by the Communist platform. In education, ministry officials are working diligently to break from Communism, embrace democracy, and implement change to revitalize the educational structure through re-writing textbooks, reform in teacher training and a new prominent role of research

Corner Culture: Corner Stores in the Black Pearl Neighborhood of New Orleans

    Get PDF
The corner store represents a significant part of New Orleans\u27 history and neighborhoods. From essential grocery providers to bars and restaurants full of local character, these buildings have held a number of roles in the community. These roles have changed in response to development patterns, market pressures, and land-use regulation. A number of these traditional businesses still exist today as neighborhood cultural institutions throughout the city. Many more, however, have faced conversions to residential buildings, abandonment, or demolition. This case study addresses the significance of the corner store, identifies a number of factors leading to its decline, and suggests that a newly revised Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance in the city of New Orleans should reserve a place for these neighborhood businesses

CONSTITUTIONAL LAW - DUE PROCESS - FISHING RIGHTS IN THE PUBLIC WATERS OF MICHIGAN

The Ne-Bo-Shone Association, Inc., is an Ohio corporation which owns property on both banks of the Pine River for some distance. Following the decision of the Michigan Supreme Court in Collins V. Gerhardt that the stream is navigable and public, the complainant association was ordered to remove obstructions in the stream which hampered the free use of the stream by the public for fishing purposes. Thereupon complainant sought an in junction against certain public officials from taking action to remove these obstructions, claiming that it has the right to exclude the public from this portion of the Pine River, and that the decision in Collins v. Gerhardt is not applicable because it disturbs a rule of property and denies due process of law. The United States District Court held that a decree of dismissal be entered. First, the court said that federal courts will not interfere by injunctive process with law enforcement by state officials, especially where the basis of jurisdiction is none other than the accident of residence, unless the path is clear ; second, that the decision of the Supreme Court of Michigan did not disturb a rule of property and therefore did not deny due process of law; third, that as an independent matter, if the court were not bound by local rules of law, it would decide the same way because navigability determines the public character of the stream and affixes certain public rights therein, including, among other rights, the coequal rights of fishing.
