Very short introduction to positional analysis

Recurso pedagĂłgico (uc 23002 e 43018)From a sustainability science perspective (Dedeurwaerdere 2014) and circular economy education (Kopnina 2018), an alternative to cost-benefit analysis is worth exploring. The opposition between cost-benefit analysis and positional analysis is parallel to that of environmental economics and ecological economics or sustainability.info:eu-repo/semantics/draf

Rewriting portuguese women’s history at international expositions (1889-1908)

This article aims to understand how the changing nature of industrial schooling contributed to the erasure of women’s participation. Industrial schooling, manual work and the politics of exposition were increasingly conceived as male, despite the Portuguese tradition of female artisanal production. With the promotion of technological modernization, at the turn of the nineteenth century, women’s artisanal or mechanical productions were no longer considered “industrial;” henceforth they ceased to be recognized as a professional activity and were mistakenly categorized as homework. Marques Leitão and António Arroio appear as key players in this process through their efforts to redesign industrial schooling with a representation of industry that was more limited than before. In the process they repositioned women’s work firmly within the home, introducing a vision of feminine domesticity which had not held sway in Portugal until then. In the first three decades of the twentieth century, both men consolidated their vision of industrial schooling through written reports and studies that synthesized the legal and pedagogical changes that they defended. These documents, written by “experts” in the field, served as precious primary sources. Reality is the product of what is said and what is left unsaid. In this case, the material traces left by the industry of women lace workers in expositions offers a suggestive way to rewrite this history.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions with H∈(0,1)H\in(0,1) as generalized white noise functionals

    Get PDF
In Rd\R^d, for any dimension d≄1d\geq 1, expansions of self-intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions with arbitrary Hurst coefficients in (0,1)(0,1) are presented. The expansions are in terms of Wick powers of white noises (corresponding to multiple Wiener integrals), being well-defined in the sense of generalized white noise functionals.Comment: 17 page

Removing zero Lyapunov exponents in volume-preserving flows

Baraviera and Bonatti proved that it is possible to perturb, in the c^1 topology, a volume-preserving and partial hyperbolic diffeomorphism in order to obtain a non-zero sum of all the Lyapunov exponents in the central direction. In this article we obtain the analogous result for volume-preserving flows.Comment: 10 page

η-conversions of IPC implemented in atomic F

    Get PDF
It is known that the ÎČ-conversions of the full intuitionistic propositional calculus (IPC) translate into ÎČη-conversions of the atomic polymorphic calculus Fat. Since Fat enjoys the property of strong normalization for ÎČη-conversions, an alternative proof of strong normalization for IPC considering ÎČ-conversions can be derived. In the present article, we improve the previous result by analysing the translation of the η-conversions of the latter calculus into a technical variant of the former system (the atomic polymorphic calculus Fat^∧_at). In fact, from the strong normalization of Fat^∧_at we can derive the strong normalization of the full intuitionistic propositional calculus considering all the standard (ÎČ and η) conversions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Style, Narrative, and Cultural Politics in Bullitt

    Get PDF
Peter Yates’s 1968 film Bullitt cemented the reputation of its star, Steve McQueen, as “the essence of cool” – to borrow a phrase from the title of the 2005 documentary that reflects on the star’s legacy. As the film reveals, however, and the documentary explores, Bullitt is fraught with narrative problems, its now iconic set-pieces seemingly purchased at the expense of coherent and accessible plot development. Meanwhile the film’s formal experimentation – internally motivated by the thematic preoccupation with “noise” and freeways – heightens the ecstatic presentation of actor/protagonist as image (and of the autonomization of “style” in general), which in turn can be read as an ambivalent response to the cultural politics of the late 1960s. This paper explores the ways in which various elements of style, narrative, and cultural politics interact within the context of the film, placing Bullitt at a pivotal moment in both cinematic and cultural history.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    iLRN 2018 Main Conference Preface

iLRN 2018. ConferĂȘncia realizada em Missoula, MT, USA, de 24-29 de junho de 2018.ILRN 2018 was the fourth annual international conference of the Immersive Learning Network. It followed on from the inaugural conference held in Prague in July 2015, the second conference held in Santa Barbara in June 2016, and the third conference held in Coimbra, Portugal, in 2017. In response to the increasingly accessible and powerful range of VR and AR technology, the vision of the iLRN is to develop a comprehensive research and outreach agenda that encompasses the breadth and scope of learning potentialities, affordances, and challenges of immersive learning environments. To achieve this, the iLRN invites and hosts scientists, practitioners, organizations, and innovators across many disciplines to explore, describe, and apply the optimal use of immersive worlds and environments for educational purposes. The annual conference aims to explain and demonstrate how these immersive learning environments best work. In 2018, 21 formal papers were received for the main conference and after a rigorous reviewing process six were selected for this Springer publication (28% acceptance rate). The authors of these papers come from institutions located in Brazil, Germany, the UK, and the USA (Florida, Texas, California). The main conference papers cover a range of interesting topics in some depth, providing useful information for other educators and researchers. Alvarez-Molina et al. report on how video games can help players develop their musical skills and illustrate this by creating and evaluating a music-video game that aims to improve the key skill of pitch recognition. Bakri et al. investigate the subjective perception of the fidelity of 3D cultural heritage artifacts on the Web and how this affects the user experience. De LeĂłn reports on the promising results of utilizing problem-based learning for bridging theory and practice in teacher preparation programs through the use of immersive, ill-structured problems in a multi-user virtual environment that simulates a real school. Feenan draws upon 10 years of studies into the use of digital game-based learning as the basis of an analysis that recommends a five-pronged approach to the successful use of games to support social resiliency skills for students in a fast-changing world. Johnson and Sullivan describe a pilot study that identifies three key strategies for making students feel more comfortable and productive in an experimental game design class. Queiroz et al. present a literature review of learning outcomes from using fully HMD-based IVE in primary/K-12 education, highlighting relevant studies, identifying gaps, and providing insights for use in further research. This informative and fascinating collection of papers reflects the emerging and valuable possibilities of immersive learning research. We know you will find many points of interest and use in the well-presented reports in this collection. Finally, we strongly encourage you to join ILRN and contribute your own insights and research to the community.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Rasiowa–Harrop disjunction property

    Get PDF
We show that there is a purely proof-theoretic proof of the Rasiowa–Harrop disjunction property for the full intuitionistic propositional calculus (IPC), via natural deduction, in which commuting conversions are not needed. Such proof is based on a sound and faithful embedding of IPC into an atomic polymorphic system. This result strengthens a homologous result for the disjunction property of IPC (presented in a recent paper co-authored with Fernando Ferreira) and answers a question then posed by Pierluigi Minari.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
