Effects of variable resistance on smart structures of cubic reconnaissance satellites in various thermal and frequency shocking conditions
Piezoelectric materials are widely used as smart structures in cubic reconnaissance satellites because of their sensing, actuating, and energy-harvesting abilities. In this study, an analytical model is developed in specific mechanical thermal shocking conditions. A special circuit and apparatus is designed for experimentation on the basis of the inverse piezoelectric effect. An equivalent circuit method is used to establish the relationship between the resistance and peak-to-peak voltage of lead zirconate titanate used as smart materials for cubic reconnaissance satellites. Various frequencies and resistance were applied in different mechanical thermal shocking conditions. Moreover, numerical simulations are conducted in various mechanical loading conditions to determine the accumulative effect. The model provides a novel mechanism to characterize the smart structures in cubic reconnaissance satellites. A rise in temperature increases peak-to-peak voltage; a rise in frequency decreases peak-to-peak voltage; and intensified resistance decreases peak-to-peak voltage. Based on experimentation and simulation, the optimum resistance is predicted for the various frequencies and temperatures. The various conditions may correspond to the different applications of smart structures for cubic reconnaissance satellites. Decision Making for Rapid Information Acquisition in the Reconnaissance of Random Fields
Research into several aspects of robot-enabled reconnaissance of random
fields is reported. The work has two major components: the underlying theory of
information acquisition in the exploration of unknown fields and the results of
experiments on how humans use sensor-equipped robots to perform a simulated
reconnaissance exercise.
The theoretical framework reported herein extends work on robotic exploration
that has been reported by ourselves and others. Several new figures of merit
for evaluating exploration strategies are proposed and compared. Using concepts
from differential topology and information theory, we develop the theoretical
foundation of search strategies aimed at rapid discovery of topological
features (locations of critical points and critical level sets) of a priori
unknown differentiable random fields. The theory enables study of efficient
reconnaissance strategies in which the tradeoff between speed and accuracy can
be understood. The proposed approach to rapid discovery of topological features
has led in a natural way to to the creation of parsimonious reconnaissance
routines that do not rely on any prior knowledge of the environment. The design
of topology-guided search protocols uses a mathematical framework that
quantifies the relationship between what is discovered and what remains to be
discovered. The quantification rests on an information theory inspired model
whose properties allow us to treat search as a problem in optimal information
acquisition. A central theme in this approach is that "conservative" and
"aggressive" search strategies can be precisely defined, and search decisions
regarding "exploration" vs. "exploitation" choices are informed by the rate at

Reconnaissance Surveying using Satellite-derived Bathymetry
False Pass, AK, USA, is the eastern-most passage through the Aleutian Islands between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean and provides a passage for small to mid-size vessels. The passage is considered an alternative route to Unimak Pass, AK for vessels from mainland Alaska and is estimated to be shorter by 160 to 240km. False Pass is closed every winter due to sea-ice cover that freezes the inlet system around OctoberNovember and melts only towards the spring (around March). As a result, the soft sediment of the seafloor contains mud and sand that may change the path of the channel after the sea ice has melted. Preparation of False Pass for the Summer/Fall vessel traffic requires many resources in a narrow springtime window to identify the main channel and to delineate it with Aids to Navigation. The surveys are typically conducted by the US Coast Guard (USCG) buoy tenders using small boats and reconnaissance-style single-beam lines. High-altitude reconnaissance aircraft
At the equator the ozone layer ranges from 65,000 to 130,000+ ft, which is beyond the capabilities of the ER-2, NASA's current high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. This project is geared to designing an aircraft that can study the ozone layer. The aircraft must be able to satisfy four mission profiles. The first is a polar mission that ranges from Chile to the South Pole and back to Chile, a total range of 6000 n.m. at 100,000 ft with a 2500-lb payload. The second mission is also a polar mission with a decreased altitude and an increased payload. For the third mission, the aircraft will take off at NASA Ames, cruise at 100,000 ft, and land in Chile. The final mission requires the aircraft to make an excursion to 120,000 ft. All four missions require that a subsonic Mach number be maintained because of constraints imposed by the air sampling equipment. Three aircraft configurations were determined to be the most suitable for meeting the requirements. The performance of each is analyzed to investigate the feasibility of the mission requirements
High altitude reconnaissance aircraft
At the equator the ozone layer ranges from 65,000 to 130,000 plus feet, which is beyond the capabilities of the ER-2, NASA's current high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. The Universities Space Research Association, in cooperation with NASA, is sponsoring an undergraduate program which is geared to designing an aircraft that can study the ozone layer at the equator. This aircraft must be able to cruise at 130,000 feet for six hours at Mach 0.7, while carrying 3,000 lbs. of payload. In addition, the aircraft must have a minimum range of 6,000 miles. In consideration of the novel nature of this project, the pilot must be able to take control in the event of unforeseen difficulties. Three aircraft configurations were determined to be the most suitable - a joined-wing, a biplane, and a twin-boom conventional airplane. Low cost missions to explore the diversity of near Earth objects
We propose a series of low-cost flyby missions to perform a reconnaissance of near-Earth cometary nuclei and asteroids. The primary scientific goal is to study the physical and chemical diversity in these objects. The mission concept is based on the Pegasus launch vehicle. Mission costs, inclusive of launch, development, mission operations, and analysis are expected to be near $50 M per mission. Launch opportunities occur in all years.
