    APQL: A process-model query language

    As business process management technology matures, organisations acquire more and more business process models. The management of the resulting collections of process models poses real challenges. One of these challenges concerns model retrieval where support should be provided for the formulation and efficient execution of business process model queries. As queries based on only structural information cannot deal with all querying requirements in practice, there should be support for queries that require knowledge of process model semantics. In this paper we formally define a process model query language that is based on semantic relationships between tasks in process models and is independent of any particular process modelling notation

    Assisted Declarative Process Creation from Natural Language Descriptions

    In this paper, we report recent advances on user support for declarative process generation from natural language descriptions. The Process Highlighter is a hybrid modelling tool that facilitates the (manual) creation of Dynamic Response Condition (DCR) graphs directly from text documents, supporting non-technical users in the adoption of declarative process models. While some process descriptionsare a few paragraphs long, others, such as the ones coming from municipal governments and legal bodies might contain several pages. Some aspects that undermine the adoption of hybrid modelling techniques and their promised one-to-one correspondence between texts and process models are the length of the texts, the inconsistent use of terms, and the difficulty in identifying textual elements that correspond to elements in a declarative process model. To mitigate theserisks, we have implemented major additions in the Process Highlighter for industrial usage. The principal change is the inclusion of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to support users in the identification of roles, activities and constraints. This, combined with the modelling, simulation and verification tools already existing in the framework, support the users in providing process models that are better aligned with their specifications, in a shorter time. These features are motivated from empirical observations of the use of the Process Highlighter in groups of caseworkers and students of process engineering in Danish universities

    The language of certain conflicts of a nondeterministic process

    The language of certain conflicts is the most general set of behaviours of a nondeterministic process, which certainly lead to a livelock or deadlock when accepted by another process running in parallel. It is of great use in model checking to detect livelocks or deadlocks in very large systems, and in process-algebra to obtain abstractions preserving livelock and deadlock. Unfortunately, the language of certain conflicts is difficult to compute and has only been approximated in previous work. This paper presents an effective algorithm to calculate the language of certain conflicts for any given nondeterministic finite-state process and discusses its properties. The algorithm is shown to be correct and of exponential complexity

    Education is important for all, including those students with special needs.In this context, learning process for students with special needsis certainly different from normal students, with special developed curriculum, as well as special skills for teachers are devotedfor teaching specific courses.This study investigatesthe special education teachers’approach in teaching phonics of the language (i.e. Bahasa Melayu)for autism students, focusing on three elements; namely learning module, oral language and multimedia application. A survey study was designed using questionnaire involving 42 special education teachers from primary schools in the Southern Peninsular of Malaysia.Descriptive analysis were used to obtain percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results;a moderate level application of the module (M = 3.43, SD = 0.654) and the oral language (M = 3.64, SD = 0.570), but a high level of the multimedia application(M = 4.14, SD = 0.612). The multimedia elements wasthe most favorable approach in the teaching and learning process of autism students.The implication;more special design of a multimedia materials are needed for teaching phonics for language learning to help autism students to speaking correctly

    Instances and connectors : issues for a second generation process language

    This work is supported by UK EPSRC grants GR/L34433 and GR/L32699Over the past decade a variety of process languages have been defined, used and evaluated. It is now possible to consider second generation languages based on this experience. Rather than develop a second generation wish list this position paper explores two issues: instances and connectors. Instances relate to the relationship between a process model as a description and the, possibly multiple, enacting instances which are created from it. Connectors refers to the issue of concurrency control and achieving a higher level of abstraction in how parts of a model interact. We believe that these issues are key to developing systems which can effectively support business processes, and that they have not received sufficient attention within the process modelling community. Through exploring these issues we also illustrate our approach to designing a second generation process language.Postprin

    Standard graphical representations have played a crucial role in science and engineering throughout the last century. Without electrical symbolism, it is very likely that our industrial society would not have evolved at the same pace. Similarly, specialised notations such as the Feynmann notation or the process flow diagrams did a lot for the adoption of concepts in their own fields. With the advent of Systems Biology, and more recently of Synthetic Biology, the need for precise and unambiguous descriptions of biochemical interactions has become more pressing. While some ideas have been advanced over the last decade, with a few detailed proposals, no actual community standard has emerged. The Systems Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN) is a graphical representation crafted over several years by a community of biochemists, modellers and computer scientists. Three orthogonal and complementary languages have been created, the Process Diagrams, the Entity Relationship Diagrams and the Activity Flow Diagrams. Using these three idioms a scientist can represent any network of biochemical interactions, which can then be interpreted in an unambiguous way. The set of symbols used is limited, and the grammar quite simple, to allow its usage in textbooks and its teaching directly in high schools. The first level of the SBGN Process Diagram has been publicly released. Software support for SBGN Process Diagram was developed concurrently with its specification in order to speed-up public adoption. Shared by the communities of biochemists, genomicians, theoreticians and computational biologists, SBGN languages will foster efficient storage, exchange and reuse of information on signalling pathways, metabolic networks and gene regulatory maps

    The Sundanese language is a local language that has been used by the majority of Indonesians as their daily language. It is the second most widely spoken language after the Javanese language. It is, therefore, not surprising that the Sundanese is used in many types of business including medical institutions directly in touch with society. When doctors and nurses are taking care of patients in a particular ethnic group such as the Sundanese, they may need to master the language so that they are better able to communicate with the patients. Psychologically, the patients may feel less anxious as the doctors are explaning their illness or recovery process in their indigenous language. The use of the language can also be one of the palpable efforts that exhilarates the patients’ spirit of life. As later shown, some researches have proven that patients prefer to go to particular hospitals not only because of the medical apparatus they are provided with, or the less distance they have to travel, but also because of the luxurious cultural services they experience. This luxury is the therapeutic communication which takes advantages of the Sundanese language. Therapeutic communication is a type of language transmissions that promotes patients’ healing process. It is a process employed by doctors, nurses, and medical staff requiring an approach planned consciously focusing on the patients’ recovery. To overcome therapeutic communication’s obstacles, the staff need to be ready to reveal their strong emotional feelings towards the patients in an appropriate context. Therefore, the staf must have adequate knowledge regarding this face-to-face process of interacting that focuses on advancing the physical and emotional well-being of the patients
