    (Not) Summing over Kaluza-Kleins

Models in extra-dimensions have unique features. Many of their surprising properties simply result from the underlying 5D structure. This structure shows up as ``Sum Rules'' involving the whole tower of Kaluza-Kleins. In this paper, we present a holographic shortcut and derive these results without solving the eigenvalue problem: we express 4D physical quantities directly in terms of the 5D metric. In warped space, one can go further and isolate the effect of the new physics sector. This method can be used for any 5D model, and we apply it here to the case of holographic QCD and technicolor

Peter Newby\u27s theory of \u27Arepoid\u27 word squares being merely classical recreational linguistics is fine as far as it goes, but he marred his discussion by supplying perfect examples of English construction. If, as he suggests, AREPO is a non-word, then each of his squares also should have contained a non-word

With the recent discovery in the north of England of yet another example of the famous Latin palindromic square illustrated at the left, it is time to review the mystery surrounding this clever construction. Found at an archeological site in Manchester, this joins the other discoveries in various sites throughout the lands of the former Roman Empire

High prices, not waste or over-use, drive high health care costs in the US

The US spends nearly 18 percent of its GDP on health care, making it a real outlier among high-income countries in this area. But what is behind this unusually high level of health care spending? Irene Papanicolas investigates common beliefs about why spending is so high, including that US residents use more health care services, have poorer quality of care, and use 'too much' inpatient care. She finds that higher costs in the US are largely driven by higher prices across a wide range of health care services such as surgical procedures and drugs, as well as administrative complexity and costs

Over-diagnosis of malaria is not a lost cause.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have highlighted the over-diagnosis of malaria in clinical settings in Africa. This study assessed the impact of a training programme implemented as part of an intervention trial on diagnostic behaviour of clinicians in a rural district hospital in a low-moderate malaria transmission setting. METHODS: From the beginning of 2005, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of intermittent preventive treatment for malaria in infants (IPTi) has been conducted at the study hospital. As part of the RCT, the study team offered laboratory quality assurance, and supervision and training of paediatric ward staff using information on malaria epidemiology in the community. Data on clinical and blood slide confirmed cases of malaria from 2001 to 2005 were extracted from the hospital records. RESULTS: The proportion of blood slides positive for malaria parasites had decreased from 21% in 2001 to 7% in 2005 (p < .01). The proportion of outpatient and inpatient cases diagnosed as malaria ranged between 34% and 28% from 2001 to 2004 and this decreased substantially to 17% after the introduction of the package of training and support in 2005 (p < .01). There was no clear trend in the ratio of blood slide examined versus total diagnosis of malaria. CONCLUSION: It may be possible to change the diagnostic behaviour of clinicians by rigorous training using local malaria epidemiology data and supportive supervision

Recognition-induced forgetting does not operate over objects lacking semantic information

    Get PDF
Recognition-induced forgetting is a forgetting phenomenon in which memory for initially learned stimuli is negatively impacted by the recognition of categorically related stimuli. While this forgetting effect has been found to operate over categories of everyday objects (e.g., vases, chairs), objects of expertise, and episodic memory, the role of semantic information has yet to be fully explored. Here we seek to understand whether semantic information is the critical category-grouping cue behind recognition-induced forgetting in order to establish a model for its underlying mechanism. To this end, letters are utilized in the present study because they feature an automatic category grouping (e.g., A’s of different fonts belong to a group) and little to no semantic information (e.g. there is no semantic information that belongs to all A’s). If semantic information is critical to category groupings in recognition-induced forgetting, then categories comprised of letters will be immune to recognition-induced forgetting. Indeed, we found that recognition-induced forgetting did not operate over letters, suggesting that semantic information plays a critical role in categories that are susceptible to recognition-induced forgetting. No embargoAcademic Major: Psycholog
