Measuring galaxy segregation using the mark connection function

    Get PDF
(abridged) The clustering properties of galaxies belonging to different luminosity ranges or having different morphological types are different. These characteristics or `marks' permit to understand the galaxy catalogs that carry all this information as realizations of marked point processes. Many attempts have been presented to quantify the dependence of the clustering of galaxies on their inner properties. The present paper summarizes methods on spatial marked statistics used in cosmology to disentangle luminosity, colour or morphological segregation and introduces a new one in this context, the mark connection function. The methods used here are the partial correlation functions, including the cross-correlation function, the normalised mark correlation function, the mark variogram and the mark connection function. All these methods are applied to a volume-limited sample drawn from the 2dFGRS, using the spectral type as the mark. We show the virtues of each method to provide information about the clustering properties of each population, the dependence of the clustering on the marks, the similarity of the marks as a function of the pair distances, and the way to characterise the spatial correlation between the marks. We demonstrate by means of these statistics that passive galaxies exhibit stronger spatial correlation than active galaxies at small scales (r <20 Mpc/h). The mark connection function, introduced here, is particularly useful for understanding the spatial correlation between the marks.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

Bandura explains that self-efficacy is a person's belief about ability to perform a task or action to achieve a particular result. Students with high self-efficacy will be able to deal with the OSCE successfully and smoothly. This study is a longitudinal study with retrospective approach to determine the correlation between self-efficacy and the mark of OSCE to the third year students of Faculty of Medicine, University of Riau. The sample 102 students of this study were taken by total sampling technique. Primary data was taken by self-efficacy questionnaire modified from Rizkia research based on the theory of Bandura and secondary data from mark of the OSCE taken from manager skill lab. Statistical test to determine the correlation between self-efficacy and the mark of OSCE used Spearman test. The results of this study showed that there is no significant correlation between self-efficacy and the mark of OSCE (r=0.137; p=0.170). The conclusion of this study there was no correlation between self-efficacy and mark of the OSCE in the students third year of medical university Riau

A RAM memory built into the Mark 3 decoder module allows the capture of 1 Megabit of data. Data may be collected either in real time or from a pre-recorded tape. Once collected, the data may be retrieved using a standard EIA serial data link. The data may be transmitted to a remote computer for cross correlation processing with similar data from other stations to verify fringes in real time. The data may also be analyzed by a local computer to verify phase calibration, bandpass, format, etc., during a Mark 3 observing session

Student feedback is one of the important components in the learning and teaching process evaluation at various stages of higher level education in Malaysia. Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA Sri Gading (KKTMSG) with eight departments is a location of study that have intakes twice a year, January-June (JJ) and July-December (JD). A continuous assessment by student has been executed over years and compulsory to fill in during the final examination week around May and November. Four objectives of this study are to determine if there is any correlation exist between Educator Mark with Total Marks of Personality and Teaching and Learning, to investigate if there is any correlation exist between Personality and its criteria, to explore if there is any correlation exist between Teaching and Learning and its each criteria and finally to determine if any association exist between Gender and Educator Mark with hypothesis null that both variables are independent. Main instrument used is a questionnaire with quantitative research design sur-vey technique consists of basic Demography, Personality and Teaching and Learning sections. The survey question is in a Likert scale start from 1 to 5 that represent Never, Almost Never, Sometimes, Almost Every Time and Every Time respectively. The dependent variable is an Educator Mark meanwhile the independent variables consists of 24 variables known as Semester, Year, Educator, Gender, Department, Student, 20 variables of criteria selection from Personality with 8 questions and from Teaching and Learning with 12 questions in a Likert scale. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and chi-square test have been adopted to this study. Result shows that 55.4% and 44.6% of the sample data are male and female respectively, which sounds reasonable represent the population of educator in KKTMSG and the highest respondent for both genders represent from PA Department. First objective presents a strong relationship with correlation value at 0.976 for Teaching and Learning compared to Personality and second objective shows all criteria have strong relationship with criteria Fairness, E presents highest correlation value at 0.976 compared to others. In the meantime, third objective 3 display similar result that criteria Committed During Teaching and Learning Process, T represents highest correlation value at 0.984 compared to others. All these results were based on significant p-value of less than 0.05. Finally, a Chi-Square Test conclude that Gender and Educator Mark are independent, and this shows that students are freely to evaluate educator in KKTMSG without consider or concern either the educator is male or female

Research aims to find the influence of strategies used in intermediate kanji learning, i.e. in a more applicative class using kanji, on middle kanji and composition class (sakubun). Research viewed and compared the influence of students' mark in Intermediate Kanji with their mark in Sakubun. The questionnaire used in this research was the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) consisting of 50 questions associated with types of strategy to learn kanji. The result obtained using T-test and correlation test was the students' mark in kanji affected their mark in Sakubun. The relationship is the higher mark in kanji, the higher mark in Sakubun. As a conclusion, student essay writing ability is affected by the numbers of kanji remembered and used by students

Towards the re-verification of process tank calibrations

Re-verification is needed to ensure that the calibration (the relationship between measured level and measured volume) that is obtained during commissioning hasn’t changed over time. This can be achieved, in part, by metering in solution and correlating with marks identified a priori. Mark identification and correlation are discussed and possible error sources are outlined

Do Some Firms Persistently Outperform ?

This study analyses persistence in growth rates of the entire population of Dutch manufacturing firms. Previous literature on firm growth rates shows that extreme growth events are likely to be negatively correlated over time. A rebound effect following an extreme growth event questions the existence of persistent outperformers, indicated by a positive correlation over time. By supplementing the quantile regression analyses with transition probability matrices, our study shows that ?bouncing? firms co-exist with persistent outperformers. This result is robust if we exclude firms involved in acquisitions or spin offs. Differentiating among different size classes, we find that the existence of persistent outperformers is especially pronounced in micro firms. We interpret this finding as supporting the notion of a Schumpeter Mark I regime, with small firms displaying strong heterogeneity in their growth patterns, versus a Schumpeter Mark II regime, with large firms displaying less heterogeneity of growth.firm growth; heterogeneity; persistence, transition probability matrices; quantile regression

Main Flaws of The Collateralized Debt Obligation‘s: Valuation Before And During The 2008/2009 Global Turmoil

As a result of the 2008 financial crisis, the world credit markets stalled significantly and raised the doubts of market participants and policymakers about the proper and fair valuation of financial derivatives and structured products such as collateralized debt obligations (CDOs). The aim of the paper is to contribute to the understanding of CDOs and shed light on CDO valuation based on data before and during the current financial upheaval. We present the One Factor Model based on a Gaussian Copula and test five hypothesizes. Based on the results we discovered four main deficiencies of the CDO market. For our modelling we used data of the CDX NA IG 5Y V3 index from 20 September 2007 until 27 February 2009 and its quotes we appropriately transform into CDO quotes. Based on the results we discovered four main deficiencies of the CDO market: i) an insufficient analysis of underlying assets by both investors and rating agencies; ii) the valuation model was usually based only on expected cash-flows when neglecting other factors such mark-to-market losses or correlation risk; iii) mispriced correlation; and finally iv) the mark-to-market valuation obligation for financial institutions should be reviewed. Based on the mentioned recommendations we conclude that the CDO market has a chance to be regenerated. However, the future CDO market would then be more conscious, driven by smarter motives rather than by poor understanding of risks involved in CDOs.collateralized debt obligations, Gaussian Copula, valuation, securitization

DNA methylation is an epigenetic mark associated with regulation of transcription and genome structure. These markers have been investigated in a variety of cancer settings for their utility in differentiating normal tissue from tumor tissue. Here, we examine the direct correlation between DNA methylation and patient survival. We find that changes in the DNA methylation of key pancreatic developmental genes are strongly associated with patient survival
