Panels illuminated by edge-lighted lens technique
Electroluminescent lamps used to edge-light a specially ground lens provide nonglare, reduced eye strain panel illumination. There is no noticeable falloff in brightness along the lens edge. Light intensity diminishes toward the lens center. A slight halo, observed along the lens edge, has no detrimental effect
Illuminated display panel is easily changed
Photographic negative placed between two plastic sheets and back-lighted in selected areas prepares illuminated multicolored display panels. The device is inexpensive, easily changed, and quickly fabricated
The Asperian Design
Reality is two-fold, composed of the lighted world as revealed in Genesis, and the darker primordiality which preceded it. The illuminated represents that which the human mind can comprehend, manipulate and re-order to its will: a “designed” and mechanical universe of parts. But behind it, in the backspace of reality, remains the darkness. A formless state of pre-creation, the darkness exists as an endless series of intertwining “signatures” – single possibilities waiting to be created in the illuminated forefront of reality. Permitting each and every part of the lighted world to be connected to the rest, it possesses a “design” all of its own. The question is, if we are blind in the dark, how could we ever come to know it
Lighted Ear Curette
The ear canal is a sensitive and small part of the human body that is prone to accumulate cerumen or lodge foreign bodies. In order to clean the ear canal or remove foreign bodies, three hands are required: one to brace the patient\u27s head, one to maneuver the curette that is used to clean the ear, and one to hold a light source in order to make the small, dark area visible. Therefore, a design is needed that can allow a doctor to safely clean an ear with an instrument that only requires two hands. Furthermore, the design must have disposable curette tip attachments in the form of both a scoop (used to clean the ear) and tweezers (used to remove foreign bodies), while remaining affordable. To make this possible, a design was created that has both a tweezer and scoop disposable attachment that connect onto a reusable handle. A small lighted camera snaps onto the disposable curettes a few centimeters from the end of the tip. When the curette is inserted into the ear, the camera displays a video of the inner ear onto a screen, allowing the user complete visualization as they work, decreasing procedure time and increasing comfort. This report outlines the background, design strategies and results of the ear curette design created. The resulting product is a prototype created using a 3D printer to demonstrate how the curette assembles and functions. Further development of this prototype and the creation of a complete manufacturing plan is necessary before it is ready to be used in a medical setting
The Lincoln-Douglas Solution
No matter which of Monday night’s two candidates you think won or lost, the real loser was the debate itself. The physical environment of Hofstra’s Mack Center was surprisingly cramped and poorly lighted; the podiums made both candidates seem remote; and Lester Holt’s hapless management was repeatedly stampeded-over by the debaters and the audience. Both Trump and Clinton appeared to be playing parodies of themselves, Trump by turns meandering and furious, Clinton condescending and unimaginative. [excerpt

The Disquieted Heart and the Lighted Path: LeVar Burton’s Dedication Day Speech
This Saturday past brought with it an electric sort of chill, the kind fueled by a driving breeze that lifts your jacket, steals past your socks and up your legs, worms its way through gaps in scarves and gloves, and leaves you feeling naked and afraid and alive in ways that no one else can see. The kind of wind that whisks away complicity and surety, leaving you with nothing but a burning compulsion to do something that will reignite your humanity, your belief in goodness, your claim to a kind life. For those who attended, the Dedication Day ceremony in the National Cemetery trembled with the same terrible power. This year, there was something dreadfully eerie about coming together to honor men slain in the struggle to prove that a nation “conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” could endure terrible division and betrayal between its countrymen. The speechmaking, no matter its tenor, could not escape the gravity of the question on everyone’s mind: what does the future hold for America, and how can we make sure it won’t undo the already unfinished work for which our forefathers died?

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ILLUMINATION SOURCES ON COLOUR AND OXIDATIVE STABILITY OF SEASONED COPPA DI PARMA PGI
The influence of different lighting durations, lamps and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the colour and oxidative stability of lipids was studied in Coppa di Parma PGI. The samples were stored (4 degrees C) in darkness or lighted by UV-free lamps. In trials 1 and 2, the samples were lighted 24 and 12 h/day, respectively, and were packaged in air. In trial 3, samples were packaged in MA (70% N-2/30% CO2) and lighted 12 h/day. In air, illumination reduced oxidative stability, redness, colour saturation and increased the Hue angle. In MAP, the lighting conditions did not affect colour and oxidative stability. During storage the lipid oxidation increased. Overall, light negatively affected the studied parameters
