READING AS AN IMPORTANT SKILLS FOR STUDENTS

    Get PDF
Language is a very essential instrument in communication. According to Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary of Current English, language is “(1)The system of sounds and words used by humans to express their thoughts and feelings, (2) the particular language system used by a people or nation” (Hornby, 1995). It means people can express their ideas, thoughts, feelings, and desires by language. People have to learn language and master four basic language skills. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The four basic language skills are divided into two media for language communication: 1) receiving the message, i.e.,reading and listening, 2) and sending the message, i.e., speaking and writing. These skills are used for completing communication when people learn about language

Pacing and Self-regulation: Important Skills for Talent Development in Endurance Sports

    Get PDF
Pacing has been characterized as a multifaceted goal-directed process of decision making in which athletes need to decide how and when to invest their energy during the race, a process essential for optimal performance. Both physiological and psychological characteristics associated with adequate pacing and performance are known to develop with age. Consequently, the multifaceted skill of pacing might be under construction throughout adolescence, as well. Therefore, the authors propose that the complex skill of pacing is a potential important performance characteristic for talented youth athletes that needs to be developed throughout adolescence. To explore whether pacing is a marker for talent and how talented athletes develop this skill in middle-distance and endurance sports, they aim to bring together literature on pacing and literature on talent development and self-regulation of learning. Subsequently, by applying the cyclical process of self-regulation to pacing, they propose a practical model for the development of performance in endurance sports in youth athletes. Not only is self-regulation essential throughout the process of reaching the long-term goal of athletic excellence, but it also seems crucial for the development of pacing skills within a race and the development of a refined performance template based on previous experiences. Coaches and trainers are advised to incorporate pacing as a performance characteristic in their talent-development programs by stimulating their athletes to reflect, plan, monitor, and evaluate their races on a regular basis to build performance templates and, as such, improve their performance

Project Management Competencies: A Survey of Perspectives Form Project Managers in South East Queensland

    Get PDF
The findings are presented of a competency survey of project managers in South East Queensland, Australia. This was designed to capture the ‘real world’ experiences and skills of current practicing project managers, and investigate the most important project management skills that a project manager must possess, and obtain any additional skills and/or issues that a project manager should possess and be aware of in the twenty-first century. In terms of project management skills, it was found that the ability to communicate, ability to meet project objectives and make decisions are the most important skills needed. In contrast, ability to use computer/project management software and ability to manage legal issues are the least important skills. In terms of current skills, the older managers, with the exception of the use of computer/project management software, have a greater degree of project management skills than their younger counterparts. The biggest gap between skills needed and skills possessed is in communication. The issues and skills that a project manager should be aware of and possess in the foreseeable future were found to comprise industrial relations, workplace health and safety, environmental issues, adaptability/innovative/flexibility, stakeholders management skill, coaching/transfer of knowledge skill, client related skill, networking skill and business skill

Improving Listening and Speaking Skills by Using Animation Videos and Discussion Method

Listening and speaking are the important skills that have to be mastered by the students. By having these skills, the students can communicate with others easily. There are many strategies that can be used to teach listening and speaking skills. One of the strategies is by using animation videos. Many students of all ages still like watching animation videos for they are interesting. Animation videos can help the students more understand because they present visual context aids that assist the students comprehend and improve their learning skills. Animation videos can be integrated with discussion method. This paper aims at providing required information about the advantages of animation videos and how to use them in the teaching and learning English activity

Determiners of accuracy when making an expected duration estimation: The role of ‘past’ event/task saliency

    Get PDF
One of the important ‘skills’ which is associated with effective time management is the ability to accurately estimate the probable duration of a to-be-scheduled event or task. The present study explored the effect that presenting a highly salient, similar to-be-estimated task had on a subsequent task estimate. Participants in this experiment tended to allocate significantly less time to the completion of a task if they had previously estimated the expected duration of a similar, shorter task. Conversely, they tended to allocate significantly more time to the completion of a task if they had previously estimated the expected duration of a similar but longer task. The results are discussed in relation to future developments in scheduling/time management software

Introduction to Iltis: An Interactive, Web-Based System for Teaching Logic

Logic is a foundation for many modern areas of computer science. In artificial intelligence, as a basis of database query languages, as well as in formal software and hardware verification --- modelling scenarios using logical formalisms and inferring new knowledge are important skills for going-to-be computer scientists. The Iltis project aims at providing a web-based, interactive system that supports teaching logical methods. In particular the system shall (a) support to learn to model knowledge and to infer new knowledge using propositional logic, modal logic and first-order logic, and (b) provide immediate feedback and support to students. This article presents a prototypical system that currently supports the above tasks for propositional logic. First impressions on its use in a second year logic course for computer science students are reported

Improving Listening and Speaking Achievements of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 6 Metro by Using Videos Plus Discussion Method

Listening and speaking are the important skills that have to be mastered by the students. By having these skills, the students can communicate with others easily. However, the teaching and learning of listening and speaking skills are still problematical. The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not videos plus discussion method was effective in improving the students\u27 listening and speaking achievements.  This study involved one hundred and ninety six of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Metro and forty of them were selected as the sample by using purposive sampling technique. The results of this study showed that the videos plus discussion method was considered as one of the effective ways to improve the students\u27 listening and speaking achievements

My First Cookbook! Healthy Recipes that Kids Can Make

    Get PDF
The obesity epidemic in the United States continues to negatively impact health outcomes in every age group. Interventions aimed at the pediatric population is an especially attractive public health strategy to help kids early on develop important skills for healthy eating to carry with them into adulthood. Childhood obesity prevalence remains alarmingly high at about 17% and has a huge impact on children’s health including higher likelihood of developing risk factors for heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, sleep apnea, psychiatric problems and problems with self-esteem. This project aims to help elementary school aged children become more involved in making their own healthy food choices by creating a cookbook with recipes that children in this age bracket can make themselves. Its recipes are guided by the recommendations of the Mediterranean diet.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1334/thumbnail.jp

Teaching cross-sectional anatomy in parallel with gross anatomy through a curriculum incorporating CT scanning of cadavers

    Get PDF
Navigating and interpreting cross-sectional medical image sets are important skills used by most physicians to apply anatomical knowledge to patient care. However, few medical schools provide formal instruction in understanding cross-sectional anatomy. For these reasons, a curriculum was developed in which the medical school gross anatomy cadavers were CT scanned prior to dissection, and CT images of specific cadavers were correlated both to labelled atlas images and to direct structural observations of those same cadavers during dissection. The students were taught to navigate CT data sets in axial, coronal, and sagittal planes, to mentally synthesize three-dimensional understandings of individual cadaveric structures, and to correlate these understandings to the same structures observed directly during dissection. On average, the students reported a significantly higher interest in interpreting radiologic images and comfort level interacting with CT images after the course. Additionally, several opportunities to improve the educational initiative were discovered
