Rural men getting through adversity: stories of resilience

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to identiy the factors that have helped rural men to move through adversity. A total of ten men from Queensland took part in the study. Participants shared their experiences through in-depth, unstructured interviews. The participants shared a diverse range of difficulties in their lives, but on analysis it become apparent that there were similarities in how the participants overcame those difficult times. Two major themes identified in the study were: the individual and inner strength and support and strategies

Spectral Flow and Feigin-Fuks Parameter Space of N=4 Superconformal Algebras

The parameter space of the Feigin-Fuks representations of the N=4 SU(2)k_k superconformal algebras is studied from the viewpoint of the specral flow. The η\eta phase of the spectral flow is nicely incorporated through twisted fermions and the spectral flow resulting from the inner automorphism of the N=4 superconformal algebras is explicitly shown to be operating as identiy relations among the generators. Conditions for the unitary representations are also investigated in our Feigin-Fuks parameter space.Comment: LaTeX file, 21 pages, 1 figure(ps file

Examining the Role of Ethnic Identity in the Relationship Between Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders and Eating Disorders

    Get PDF
The present work provides a synthetic literature review investigating the potential role of ethnic identity in the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and eating disorders (EDs). To date, there is no literature that directly examines the role that ethnic identity may play in the relationship between these two disorders. However, there is reason to believe it may; previous literature has shown that race/ethnicity plays a role in both of these disorders, and the role of ethnic identity has been more fully explored in the ED population. Notably, there is little research that examines the role of ethnic identity on ASD diagnoses. Based on the literature addressing the roles of race/ethnicity and ethnic identity in EDs along with the role of race/ethnicity in ASD, a hypothesis was formulated and explored in an attempt to facilitate an understanding of the role that ethnic identity has on the relationship between EDs and ASD. The thesis concludes by highlighting implications for clinical practice and offering suggestions for future research

Are binge drinking disparities by sexual identity lower in U.S. states with nondiscrimination statutes that include sexual orientation?

Purpose Studies examining binge drinking disparities by sexual identity focus on intra- and inter-personal minority stressors experienced by lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations. State-level statutes are powerful tools that can reduce health disparities. We examined how state-level nondiscrimination statutes that include sexual orientation as a protected ground (i.e., inclusive statutes) are associated with binge drinking disparities between LGB and straight adults. Methods We combined data from the 2015-2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), and administrative data sources for information on binge drinking, sexual identity, nondiscrimination statutes, and individual and state-level factors. We included an interaction term in the logistic regression models to test whether inclusive nondiscrimination statutes modify the association between sexual identity and binge drinking. Results Inclusive statutes modified the association between sexual identity and binge drinking among women, but not men. In states without inclusive statutes, the odds of binge drinking among lesbian [1.71 (95%CI: 1.27–2.31)] and bisexual [1.83 (95% CI: 1.54–2.17)] women were significantly higher compared with straight women. In states with inclusive statutes, the odds of binge drinking comparing lesbian and straight women were not significantly different [1.19 (95% CI: 0.92–1.53)]. The odds ratio for binge drinking comparing bisexual and straight women was 26.8% lower in states with [1.34 (95% CI: 1.13–1.60)] versus states without inclusive statutes. Conclusions The enactment of nondiscrimination statutes inclusive of sexual orientation at the state-level are associated with narrower binge drinking disparities between lesbian, bisexual, and straight women

    A Spectral Identiy Card

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper studies a new spectral analysis strategy for detecting, characterizing and classifying spectral structures of an unknown stationary process. The spectral structures we consider are defined as sinusoidal waves, narrow band signals or noise peaks. A sum of an unknown number of these structures is embedded in an unknown colored noise. The proposed methodology provides a way to calculate a spectral identity card, which features each of these spectral structures, similarly to a real I.D. The processing is based on a local Bayesian hypothesis testing, which is defined in frequency and which takes account of the noise spectrum estimator. Thanks to a matching with the corresponding spectral window, each I.D. card permits the classification of the associated spectral structure into one of the following four classes: Pure Frequency, Narrow Band, Alarm and Noise. Each I.D. card is actually the result of the fusion of intermediate cards, obtained from complementary spectral analysis methods

Free Malcev algebra of rank three

We find a basis of the free Malcev algebra on three free generators over a field of characteristic zero. The specialty and semiprimity of this algebra are proved. In addition, we prove the decomposability of this algebra into subdirect sum of the free Lie algebra rank three and the free algebra of rank three of variety of Malcev algebras generated by a simple seven-dimensional Malcev algebra
