Water is an appreciated element that is commonly found in urban environments. Research shows that water through its sensory characteristics gives rise to a positive perception of places and can contribute to the stimulation of senses. Stormwater, which is the water naturally occurring in urban locations, is usually led away and the water used in water elements is usually clean drinking water, which is a waste of resources. By developing open stormwater systems, the water can be handled sustainably while being visible and creating sensory perception values. The district center of SvartbÀcken Torbjörns torg, located two kilometers north of central Uppsala, is planned to be redeveloped, including the stormwater management. Because of the estimated increase of stormwater which will increase the load on the stormwater pipes, this work examines how Torbjörns torg can be designed with sustainable stormwater management to create sensible values. Sustainable stormwater management can help reduce the load on the pipes. The result, the design proposal, is based on a literature compilation, the site analyzes, and work with sketches. The square is designed based on three principles; the people, linking together, and water. The new design for Torbjörns torg invites people to stay. The square is linked to a combined square where pedestrians and cyclists are given priority. The proposal enables people to integrate and experience water while sustainably managing the stormwater
This thesis examines an approach for creating a changing design of a public space that can be adapted to a construction process while responding to the usersâ needs during this development process. In doing so, we have investigated how landscape architects can create a design with the time dimension in mind. The purpose of this thesis is to achieve a sustainable design that can be adapted and established alongside a development process, changing in line with the environment and responding to todayâs and future needs in social, aesthetic and ecological aspects.
Ongoing urbanization in Sweden represents a major challenge for landscape architects who in their work need to handle a rapidly growing population while providing sustainable, high-quality environments. A municipality facing a major development and growth is JĂ€rfĂ€lla municipality, northwest of Stockholm. JĂ€rfĂ€lla municipality is planning for comprehensive urban development project, Barkarbystaden, which will result in a total of 38 000 new inhabitants and a 50% increase in JĂ€rfĂ€llaâs population. The development process has already started and the project is planned to be completed in 2039. The number of inhabitants will gradually increase during the projectsâ construction process, and there will be a constant expansion of what is today a natural site. Consequently, this area will gradually change character from beeing a quiet and sparsely-used natural site to become an active place filled with life, motion and sound. The increased number of residents will provide more intensive use of the site than it has today, but will also result in more and different needs that will have to coexist on site.
We investigated the area where Barkarbystaden and the adjacent nature site meet, through three designs at different imagined times during the development process. These different times are referred to as phases: Phase 1 in 2017, Phase 2 in 2024 and Phase 3 in 2039. The study began with site visits, sketches and experimental creative exercises. We also conducted literature studies, map and document studies and conversations with key informants from the development project. This resulted in guidelines which were applied to the entire design process together with the three phasesâ design with appurtenant inventory, analysis and program.
Attached to this thesis we present our proposal, Getting to this through that. The thesis shows the potential role of the time dimension when it comes to design, and how landscape architects can use this in their work
The art of designing for biodiversity : a comparative case study on how biodiversity is described in the city of Stockholm and the city of Malmö
This paper aims to investigate how two Swedish metropolitan municipalities describe designing for biodiversity in urban environments. As urbanisation, climate change and reduced diversity of species increase, it is becoming increasingly important for urban environments to promote biodiversity. At the same time, designing for biodiversity in the urban environment can be a challenge, as environments with high biodiversity are not always perceived as aesthetically pleasing. In the municipalities' policy documents, there are guidelines that reflect ideas and assumptions about designing for biodiversity, which in turn give signals to practitioners about the political will and direction for the future. A qualitative analysis of policy documents from the metropolitan municipalities the City of Stockholm and the City of Malmö is conducted, to compare descriptions of designing for biodiversity in urban environments.
The results show the descriptions are relatively consistent. Biodiversity is presented as part of the visual character and identity of the cities and as a contributing factor to beautiful design. Biodiversity is also seen as one of many functions in the multifunctional design of the dense city, which is mainly exemplified by two design concepts: open stormwater management and green walls and roofs.
Collected data are discussed in relation to two theories on aesthetic sustainability formulated by Joan Iversson Nassauer and Elizabeth K. Meyer. The theories describe clashes that can arise between peopleâs aesthetic landscape preferences and the actual appearance of nature. But they also show how these challenges can be solved through design and increase both interest and understanding of the importance of ecological sustainability. In the case of the City of Stockholm and the City of Malmö, the examples of design approaches put forward are in line with Nassauerâs advocacy of orderly frames as cues to care. The fact that the municipalities describe biodiversity as an important part of their visual identity and beauty is a good basis. But when biodiversity is seen as one of many functions in a multifunctional design that prioritises human needs, there is a risk the design does not perform ecologically.
To create real spaces for biodiversity in the city, separation is advocated as a complement to Nassauerâs orderly frames and Meyerâs aesthetic experiences. By utilising the cultural design language while creating separated green environments for biodiversity providing experiential values, landscape architects can contribute to a greater understanding of the importance of biodiversity in urban space. This requires not less but more focus on design in future urban development projects. It is an art to design for biodiversity
This essay compares Alnarps VÀsterskog and the Bulltofta parks maintenance
methods and expenses. Both parks share similar goals and ambitions in their
maintenance strategies. But VĂ€sterskog with only one employee is less efficient and
more expensive than the Bulltofta park per m2 but can give a greater expression in
the way it has been shaped and designed by the individual who maintains it. The
VĂ€sterskogs method could be applied in a municipal setting with some changes to
great effect
A design proposal to Odinslund : with the sublime in consideration
pelarsal. Genom inventeringar och analyser ökar
förstÄelsen för platsen. Ett program, visioner samt
ett koncept utvecklas, vilket vidare resulterar i ett
gestaltningsförslag med hÀnsyn till den sublima
aspekten.
inventering, analys, teori, program, vision,
gestaltning och diskussion. De analyser som
genomförs i denna uppsatts Àr Kevin Lynch
stadsbildsanalys, SWOT-analys, rumslighetsanalys
komplex omgivning.
anvÀndning i litteraturen.
uppstÄtt under arbetets gÄng.
This thesis is on the subject of providing a design
proposal for Odinslund in Uppsala, with the
sublime in concideration. The selection of the place
and the subject is based on the interest in design
and a desire to draw and create a function to the
site. To me, Odinslund feels sublime and emotive;
with its strong cultural history and that the site is
characterized by rows of trees that form a pillared
hall. Through inventories and analysis one can
increase the understanding of the site. Vision and
concept will develop, which further will result in a
design proposal, with regard to the sublime aspect.
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a design
proposal for Odinslund. I want to show that the
site has development potentials and get the city
residentsâ to be more aware of the site and its
existence. The goal is to inspire and stimulate
interest for the existence of public urban spaces,
including Odinslund, so that they can be used for
the benefit of residents and the city.
The purpose is to answer the following research
questions:
How can Odinslund be designed and become an
attractive urban space?
Is it possible to use the concept âsublimeâ as a tool in
a design for Odinslund?
This thesis is divided into sections: inventory,
analysis, theory, vision, design and evaluation.
The analyzes carried out in this thesis are; Kevin
Lynch cityscape analysis, SWOT-analysis, spatial
analysis and DIVE-analysis. The analytical
methods are designed and modified to get a better
understanding of how Odinslund operates in a
complex environment. The information is collected
and presented in an accessible and comprehensive
way. For instance, the results of the analyzes
shows that it is important that the site is designed
in a way that interacts with its environment and
conformation should be a response to complex
problems.
To understand and be able to use the sublime in a
design, the concept was studied from a historical
perspective. The development of the concept
in the field of literature and its applications in
landscape architecture, has been studied. I also
give examples of projects, which take account of
the sublime aspect in the design, to increase the
inspiration.
After the theory section, a general vision for
Odinslund is provided, which is inspired and
based on inventories, analyzes and theory. The
vision treats with, among other things, how I
want the site to be used, experienced and shaped.
For instance, IÂŽm giving proposal to remove the
surrounding barriers such as bollards and crates to
open up the place to the surroundings.
The vision leads into a design proposal for
Odinslund. The design proposal aims to highlight
the sublime qualities, to give character and to
draw attention to the site. The proposal is being
represented by descriptive design principles,
perspective, sections and details.
This thesis is closing with a discussion. In this
part IÂŽm presenting and evaluating the work,
experiences and thoughts that arose during the
work. One important experience is that good
design is created when the design is based on
conditions of the place
Urban tree avenues : a conceptual design proposal of Hertig Karlâs avenue in Ărebro
identitet.
As a result of the elm disease that spread across Sweden in
the early 2000s, Hertig Karlâs Avenue in Ărebro, successively
lost all its elm-trees before 2014. Leaving the characteristic
street space empty. According to the municipality, a new
design would come after the felling. An avenue with
improved mobility for pedestrians and cyclists and which
would recreate Hertig Karlâs Avenueâs green identity.
Temporary solutions such as fast-growing trees were planted
where the elms used to stand, however today in 2023, nothing
has happened.
At the same time that Hertig Karlâs Avenue still lacks its
avenue, our cities are becoming more and more dense and
the green structure has to fight for the available spaces that
remain. The urban landscape is a place with many challenges
for both trees and people.
By studying the visual design and functions of existing
urban avenues for the street space, the work aims to create
a conceptual design proposal for Hertig Karlâs Avenue. The
design proposal will highlight how urban trees and future
avenues can optimize their ecosystem services in the urban
landscape. From providing shade and helping to regulate the
urban heat island to providing visual qualities. Urban trees
play an important role for our cities and their future, amid
ongoing climate change and rising temperatures
The elevated urban landscape : scenography in landscape architecture
fokus pÄ scenografin i just stadslandskapet, som ocksÄ Àr landskapsarkitektens frÀmsta arbetsfÀlt.
This paper is an investigation of what a cross-border rapprochement between landscape architecture
and scenography might look like, and how it can be applied on a spatial design process in the urban
landscape. Established theories about everyday life in the city as drama are applied â the city might
as well be looked upon as a stage, a landscape entirely made out of backdrops in which we perform.
How does this relate to landscape architecture, and how can a scenographic approach affect spatial
design in the urban landscape?
The investigation is divided into four parts with a concluding discussion in the end. The first part is
an overall description of the history of scenography, as well as the different traits and principals of
scenography and how these relate to spatial design. This part presents some examples of different
scenographic concepts that produces different kinds of interactions with the audience depending on
their conceptual construction. Phenomena like illusions and embodiment of power relations are
covered, and used in case studies later on. The second part dives into the phenomena of orientation
and what it looks like within scenography vs. landscape architecture, by exploring concepts of
narrative and symbolism to create a greater understanding of what orientation can look like in a
cross-over discipline. Part three establishes a dramaturgical view on the urban landscape and
explores scenography beyond the theatre, slowly getting closer to landscape architecture. The fourth
part applies a scenographic approach onto existing structures and elements found in the urban
landscape in Malmö, and analyses them using scenographic terms and concepts. Several public
artworks and parcs are used as keys to make the urban scenography visible. The concluding
discussion provides a discourse on why the components of scenography could be used in, and
benefit, the landscape architectâs practice in spatial design, as well as why knowledge of
scenographic concepts can highlight new dimensions in spatial designs and thus give places a greater
value
This study examines, in relation to planning, designing and management, the outdoor environment at two Swedish intergenerational shared sites where preeschool has been coordinated with nursing homes. The phenomenon is relatively new in Sweden and therefore there is a lack of available research and information concerning how municipalities can work to make the outdoor environment of these sites successful. Furthermore there is an uncertainty to how well these sites operate and if there is a downside to the phenomenon that we to need to recognize for future reference. The aim of the study is thus to examine these issues and investigate how the outdoor environment at intergenerational shared sites can support the intergenerational interaction and how the process involving the planning, designing and management of these sites is run at municipal level today. The study has a qualitative approach and has been conducted with the help of a literature and document study together with a case study where active staff, municipal planners, designers and managers related to each site, have been interviewed.
The literature indicates that children and the elderly have different needs linked to the outdoor environment. These differences are also reflected in tools for evaluating and designing the outdoor environment of day care centres and nursing homes. Furthermore, it is advocated to utilize the opinions of both user groups in the development of the outdoor environment. The municipalities of Gothenburg and UmeÄ refer to space share in an overall respect and planning, design and management are addressed for each group but never for the purpose of coordinating the two sites.
The case study shows that the outdoor environments at the two shared sites are divided between children and the elderly and the staff seem to have different views on the degree to which space sharing should take place.
The study shows that municipalities in the early stadges of the planning process should investigate how the outdoor environment will portray and what possibilities there are to develop the shared spaces where spontaneous encounters can occur. During this process it could be an advantage to receive opinions and experience from each user group. Regarding social interaction, the intergenerational contact should be seen as an opportunity rather than a must. First and foremost the needs of each user group should be prioritized. However it is beneficial if both young
and old can view each other from their distinguished outdoor environment. Finally it is proposed that municipalities should use follow-up programs when introducing new types of projects similar to intergenerational shared sites, where the staff is given an opportunity to voice their opinions and experiences from the coordination, to enable better collaboration for the specific site and for future reference
To borrow a place : temporary landscape architecture as an inclusive design process
The role of the landscape architect as designer of public space raises questions as: who does the city belong to? And: for whom is the city built? Lately multiple temporary design projects have appeared which have involved users and citizens in different ways. This thesis examines the potential of temporary landscape architecture as a concrete tool in testing design ideas, and furthermore how temporary landscape architecture works in combination with citizen participation. The purpose of the thesis is to create a discussion of how temporary design can work as a method to increase citizen influence in the physical planning process. Different ways of using temporary design can be sorted along a scale between two extremities. The process can aim for designing provisional solutions in the process to create a permanent design. In addition, the process aims to provide the citizens a place for experiments with the lack of a long term, defined goal. In the thesis two reference projects are observed â VĂ€nskapstorget in Malmö and Pixlapiren in Helsingborg. The two projects are located on each side of the scale and the process differs in use of temporary design and citizen participation. In addition the paper treats the question regarding the contribution of citizien participation in a process of temporary design and on the contrary â the ability of temporary design to increase citizen influence. Citizen participation can contribute with legitimacy of the temporary design and can also create a higher diversity in public spaces. Temporary design involving citizens can work as a complement to the municipalityâs obligation of consultation to reach out to underrepresented groups in the society. It can also work as a test to see how the design is received by the users. A combination of temporary design and citizen participation aim to create bonds between people, between people and the municipality and people and a place. The bond has to be maintained after the process in order to keep the contact with the citizens and avoiding disappointment leading to a lack of trust
âNoviceâ sketch : a study on the relationship between drawing and sketch for undergraduate landscape architecture students
This essay is aimed at undergraduate landscape architecture students and aims to investigate the
relationship between sketching and time. I want to investigate what significance sketching has to a
landscape architect in order for the design process to progress and in what way the distribution of
time can affect the outcome. My hypothesis is that it is not the time you spend on the sketch that is
important, but rather how you distribute time between sketching and reflection. Time is of the
essence when an idea is to turn into reality as the best possible result is to be achieved in the
shortest period of time possible. When designing a place, the sketch is the first stage in the
process. In this essay, a reasoning is carried out based on literature and oneâs own thoughts about
what a sketch and sketching are, why it is important for a landscape architect and starting points
for the sketching process before the design of a place can begin.
In this survey, the sketch's relationship relative to time was examined, where two groups' sketches
were compared against each other. Both groups sketched a total of 25 minutes but with different
distribution of time. The sketches were evaluated based on a few self-selected relevant themes.
Based on my interpretation of the sketches, I concluded that the sketches made by the participants
in the "Think" group were based on a basic idea that followed through all the sketches, where the ast sketch was always the best. It was difficult to change ideas without having time between
sketches to think, as well as difficult to change ideas during the thought process without sketching.
Only people in the "Do" group tested new ideas during the sketching process, but due to the
change of ideas, the final sketch was evidently not the best.
A further investigation would have been needed to ensure the conclusions I arrived at. To do that, I
would have needed more participants and an in-depth literature study in cognition
