E-learning is continually evolved in the adaptation of emerging technologies and pedagogies, so does the development of learning objects. Object-based learning approach has been widely adopted in e-learning.The principle concern in the conventional e-learning models is the inflexibility of the e-learning content to assist the use and management of the learning sources which are highly distributed.Rigidity of e-learning content limits its reusability and shareability.Possessing the ability to deliver strong computing power and secure data storage as services, Cloud computing is a promising computing model to promote innovative changes and add notable values to e-learning landscape. The flexibility and on-demand access to a centralized shared pool of computing resources provided by Cloud computing enables high re-usability and share-ability, hence overcomes the principle concern in e-learning due to the rigidity of e-learning content. This paper describes the design of an object-based e-learning framework embracing Cloud computing. The proposed object-based e learning framework can be used to form a new education domain that shares the Cloud characteristics of elasticity, flexibility, efficiency and reliability.Principal to the framework design is the development of Cloud-based e-learning objects where learners have the flexibility to access, personalize and deploy them in e-learning environment.Cloud-based e-learning objects are highly adaptable, reusable and easy changeable, hence allowing them to be used dynamically with greater customizability and flexibility in e-learning.Adapting Cloud computing into object-based e-learning is believed to be able to create a breakthrough in future dynamic -e-learning development

E-learning has occurred in the academic world in different forms since the early 1990s. Its use varies from interactive multimedia tools and simulation environments to static resources within learning management systems. E-learning tools and environments are no longer criticised for their lack of use in higher education in general and within the construction domain in particular. The main criticism, however, is that of reinventing the wheel in order to create new learning environments that cater for different educational needs. Therefore, sharing educational content has become the focus of current research, taking e-learning into a whole new era of developments. This era is enabled by the emergence of new technologies (online and wireless) and the development of educational standards, such as SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) and LOM (Learning Object Metadata) for example. Accordingly, the broad definition of the construction domain and the interlocking nature of subjects taught within this domain, makes the concept of sharing content most appealing. This paper proposes a framework developed to describe the various steps required in order to enable the application of e-learning metadata standards and ontology for sharable learning objects to serve the construction discipline. The paper further describes the application of the proposed framework to a case study for developing an online environment for learning objects that are standardised, sharable, transparent and that cater for the needs of learners, educators and curricula developers in Construction Management. Based on the framework, a learning objects repository is developed incorporating educational and web standards. The repository manages objects as well as metadata using ontology and offers a set of services such as storing, retrieving and searching of learning objects using Semantic Web technologies. Thus, it increases the reusability, sharability and interoperability of learning objects

The need for creating content repository stores for e-learning systems grows as the number of available materials increases. Moreover, along with the number of courses, the problem of describing them in a unified form appears. While there are standards used for strict classification of elearning content, the store model still seems to be based on preservative relational databases approach. In this paper we introduce an idea to represent the e-learning content management information in the well organized object-oriented form based on a prospective object-oriented database

The chapter explored best practices in web-based learning and teaching with a view to discover trends and provide valuable information for all in the e-learning environment. It affirms that paradigms in Web-based education have shifted from teacher-centered to learner-centered but basically it remains synchronous or asynchronous. This requires Learning Objects (LO) to be pedagogically efficient, designed to standard (Multimodal) with designers bearing in mind the varied population and learning styles. Los are to be personalized thereby creating adaptive content based on learner’s abilities, learning style, level of knowledge and preferences. It is recommended that educators have requisite background knowledge and competencies in technology such as hardware, software, and course management systems etc. Instructors, designers and all interested persons should consult a checklist of best practices, for assessing learning object repositories. More so, there is need to incorporate hands-on component into the e-learning environment. The chapter provides indicators for best practice

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link. The e-learning recommender system in learning institutions is increasingly becoming the preferred mode of delivery, as it enables learning anytime, anywhere. However, delivering personalised course learning objects based on learner preferences is still a challenge. Current mainstream recommendation algorithms, such as the Collaborative Filtering (CF) and Content-Based Filtering (CBF), deal with only two types of entities, namely users and items with their ratings. However, these methods do not pay attention to student preferences, such as learning styles, which are especially important for the accuracy of course learning objects prediction or recommendation. Moreover, several recommendation techniques experience cold-start and rating sparsity problems. To address the challenge of improving the quality of recommender systems, in this paper a novel recommender algorithm for machine learning is proposed, which combines students actual rating with their learning styles to recommend Top-N course learning objects (LOs). Various recommendation techniques are considered in an experimental study investigating the best technique to use in predicting student ratings for e-learning recommender systems. We use the Felder-Silverman Learning Styles Model (FSLSM) to represent both the student learning styles and the learning object profiles. The predicted rating has been compared with the actual student rating. This approach has been experimented on 80 students for an online course created in the MOODLE Learning Management System, while the evaluation of the experiments has been performed with the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The results of the experiment verify that the proposed approach provides a higher prediction rating and significantly increases the accuracy of the recommendation

Online learning is known as a crucial mode of the future of educational culture. Learning Management System (LMS) is a web based application where the learners are able to log on as well as access the courses which are allocate online to them. However, most LMS will simply manage the learning contents, the learning history data, the test results, and many more without managing the learning itself. Thus, the choice of an LMS is an important part of an organization's e-learning strategy and it will affect the organization for long period of time. Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is a standard that allows the interoperability of learning tools and course content and provides a collection of specifications adapted from multiple sources to offer a comprehensive suite of e-learning capabilities that enable interoperability, accessibility and reusability of Web-based learning content. i-Learn Portal is the LMS platform that promote information sharing and resources for the academicians and students of the University of Technology MARA (UiTM), and the portal also provides standard content for the respective courses for student's perusal, extending the discussion or lecture at a class. The i-Learn Centre (i-LeC) of UiTM realizes that there is a need to standardize the i-Learn Portal towards world recognized LMS and therefore this research is done to understand SCORM and a comparative study among other selected global standards such as IEEE LTSC and IMS Global Consortium is carried out

This article summarises experiences in using the hybrid approach in delivering courses online in a teaching university in Ghana. The rationale for moving face-to-face classes online was in response to a University strategic plan to encourage lecturers to use educational technologies to enhance teaching and learning. The design and implementation of the hybrid approach were based on Salmon’s (2002) five-stage model for e-moderation as well as Gagne’s (1965) nine events of instruction. The study used qualitative methods to gather information from six lecturers and 168 students who were all conveniently sampled. Students were of the opinion that the use of the hybrid approach enhanced their ICT competencies as well as their engagement with their course content. Lecturers also had a positive opinion about the hybrid online teaching approach. It was recommended that more courseware be deployed to enable students access as many courses online as possible to enhance their learning and also to help solve the problem of Massification in our Universities, Keywords: Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (MOODLE), e-moderation, Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Learning Management System (LMS
