Fast Penetration Depth Estimation for Elastic Bodies

    Get PDF
We present a fast penetration depth estimation algorithm between deformable polyhedral objects. We assume the continuum of non-rigid models are discretized using standard techniques, such as finite element or finite difference methods. As the objects deform, the pre-computed distance fields are deformed accordingly to estimate penetration depth, allowing enforcement of non-penetration constraints between two colliding elastic bodies. This approach can automatically handle self-penetration and inter-penetration in a uniform manner. We demonstrate its effectiveness on moderately complex simulation scenes

Looking to the future ... Distance Education Issues in Nebraska

The Nebraska Network 21 (NN21) Action Team on Distance Education/Outreach has studied a variety of issues related to distance education in order to better serve the people of Nebraska. Distance education has grown rapidly in Nebraska, but is clearly in its infancy. Many important issues still are being identified and are far from understood. The possibilities of distance education are yet to be fully realized. But in a state with a small, spread-out population such as ours -- perhaps in any state -- it would seem that distance education holds great promise for making many forms of education accessible to all. To further our understanding of the field of distance learning, the Action Team commissioned a series of White Papers on topics significant to distance education in Nebraska. These papers were first presented at a conference in September 1998. Summaries of the papers in this publication are intended to inform policymakers and anyone else interested in distance education about what the study of these topics yielded. These summaries are also designed to stimulate discussion

    Pseudo-distance-regularised graphs are distance-regular or distance-biregular

The concept of pseudo-distance-regularity around a vertex of a graph is a natural generalization, for non-regular graphs, of the standard distance-regularity around a vertex. In this note, we prove that a pseudo-distance-regular graph around each of its vertices is either distance-regular or distance-biregular. By using a combinatorial approach, the same conclusion was reached by Godsil and Shawe-Taylor for a distance-regular graph around each of its vertices. Thus, our proof, which is of an algebraic nature, can also be seen as an alternative demonstration of Godsil and Shawe-Taylor's theorem

    Distance dramaturgy

A correspondence and conversation between Dee Heddon and Alex Kelly. How do you tell a life? Throughout much of 2004 and into 2005 Dee Heddon and Alex Kelly corresponded by email: about auto/biographical performance, auto/biographical literature, Lad Lit, reading, writing, story telling and Third Angel’s performance making processes. This discussion was one strand of the making process of Third Angel’s performance The Lad Lit Project; a dramaturgy at a distance. Responding to research prompts from Alex – reading lists, notebook quotes, research and rehearsal room reports – Dee intervened with questions, provocations, opinions, suggestions for devising exercises. The personal, practical and theoretical intertwined. These interventions had a significant effect on the process and final show, helping Alex to move the work from a theatrical quoting of the Lad Lit genre, to become a performance work that is both autobiographical and about autobiography. For the creation of this text Dee and Alex return to their original correspondence, teasing out the significant strands and key exchanges, reflecting on carrying out dramaturgy at a distance, and discussing the impact of this process on the final performance. A document of quoted archive material (emails, notebook extracts) and discussion after the event

    Distance Learning

Distance learning is the thing without which it is impossible to learn in the future. System of distance learning has to have modern studying materials and interesting resources, where student can interact with everything which is there. Below I will give some examples of why it is worth investing and developing this system
