DeepMatching: Hierarchical Deformable Dense Matching
We introduce a novel matching algorithm, called DeepMatching, to compute
dense correspondences between images. DeepMatching relies on a hierarchical,
multi-layer, correlational architecture designed for matching images and was
inspired by deep convolutional approaches. The proposed matching algorithm can
handle non-rigid deformations and repetitive textures and efficiently
determines dense correspondences in the presence of significant changes between
images. We evaluate the performance of DeepMatching, in comparison with
state-of-the-art matching algorithms, on the Mikolajczyk (Mikolajczyk et al
2005), the MPI-Sintel (Butler et al 2012) and the Kitti (Geiger et al 2013)
datasets. DeepMatching outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms and shows
excellent results in particular for repetitive textures.We also propose a
method for estimating optical flow, called DeepFlow, by integrating
DeepMatching in the large displacement optical flow (LDOF) approach of Brox and
Malik (2011). Compared to existing matching algorithms, additional robustness
to large displacements and complex motion is obtained thanks to our matching
approach. DeepFlow obtains competitive performance on public benchmarks for
optical flow estimation
A Robust Quasi-dense Matching Approach for Underwater Images
While different techniques for finding dense correspondences in images taken in air have achieved significant success, application of these techniques to underwater imagery still presents a serious challenge, especially in the case of “monocular stereo” when images constituting a stereo pair are acquired asynchronously. This is generally because of the poor image quality which is inherent to imaging in aquatic environments (blurriness, range-dependent brightness and color variations, time-varying water column disturbances, etc.). The goal of this research is to develop a technique resulting in maximal number of successful matches (conjugate points) in two overlapping images. We propose a quasi-dense matching approach which works reliably for underwater imagery. The proposed approach starts with a sparse set of highly robust matches (seeds) and expands pair-wise matches into their neighborhoods. The Adaptive Least Square Matching (ALSM) is used during the search process to establish new matches to increase the robustness of the solution and avoid mismatches. Experiments on a typical underwater image dataset demonstrate promising results
InLoc: Indoor Visual Localization with Dense Matching and View Synthesis
We seek to predict the 6 degree-of-freedom (6DoF) pose of a query photograph
with respect to a large indoor 3D map. The contributions of this work are
three-fold. First, we develop a new large-scale visual localization method
targeted for indoor environments. The method proceeds along three steps: (i)
efficient retrieval of candidate poses that ensures scalability to large-scale
environments, (ii) pose estimation using dense matching rather than local
features to deal with textureless indoor scenes, and (iii) pose verification by
virtual view synthesis to cope with significant changes in viewpoint, scene
layout, and occluders. Second, we collect a new dataset with reference 6DoF
poses for large-scale indoor localization. Query photographs are captured by
mobile phones at a different time than the reference 3D map, thus presenting a
realistic indoor localization scenario. Third, we demonstrate that our method
significantly outperforms current state-of-the-art indoor localization
approaches on this new challenging data
Binary Adaptive Semi-Global Matching Based on Image Edges
Image-based modeling and rendering is currently one of the most challenging topics in Computer Vision and Photogrammetry. The key issue here is building a set of dense correspondence points between two images, namely dense matching or stereo matching. Among all dense matching algorithms, Semi-Global Matching (SGM) is arguably one of the most promising algorithms for real-time stereo vision. Compared with global matching algorithms, SGM aggregates matching cost from several (eight or sixteen) directions rather than only the epipolar line using Dynamic Programming (DP). Thus, SGM eliminates the classical “streaking problem” and greatly improves its accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, we aim at further improvement of SGM accuracy without increasing the computational cost. We propose setting the penalty parameters adaptively according to image edges extracted by edge detectors. We have carried out experiments on the standard Middlebury stereo dataset and evaluated the performance of our modified method with the ground truth. The results have shown a noticeable accuracy improvement compared with the results using fixed penalty parameters while the runtime computational cost was not increased
DiffMatch: Diffusion Model for Dense Matching
The objective for establishing dense correspondence between paired images
consists of two terms: a data term and a prior term. While conventional
techniques focused on defining hand-designed prior terms, which are difficult
to formulate, recent approaches have focused on learning the data term with
deep neural networks without explicitly modeling the prior, assuming that the
model itself has the capacity to learn an optimal prior from a large-scale
dataset. The performance improvement was obvious, however, they often fail to
address inherent ambiguities of matching, such as textureless regions,
repetitive patterns, and large displacements. To address this, we propose
DiffMatch, a novel conditional diffusion-based framework designed to explicitly
model both the data and prior terms. Unlike previous approaches, this is
accomplished by leveraging a conditional denoising diffusion model. DiffMatch
consists of two main components: conditional denoising diffusion module and
cost injection module. We stabilize the training process and reduce memory
usage with a stage-wise training strategy. Furthermore, to boost performance,
we introduce an inference technique that finds a better path to the accurate
matching field. Our experimental results demonstrate significant performance
improvements of our method over existing approaches, and the ablation studies
validate our design choices along with the effectiveness of each component.

Contribution towards a fast stereo dense matching.
Stereo matching is important in the area of computer vision as it is the basis of the reconstruction process. Many applications require 3D reconstruction such as view synthesis, robotics... The main task of matching uncalibrated images is to determine the corresponding pixels and other features where the motion between these images and the camera parameters is unknown. Although some methods have been carried out over the past two decades on the matching problem, most of these methods are not practical and difficult to implement. Our approach considers a reliable image edge features in order to develop a fast and practical method. Therefore, we propose a fast stereo matching algorithm combining two different approaches for matching as the image is segmented into two sets of regions: edge regions and non-edge regions. We have used an algebraic method that preserves disparity continuity at the object continuous surfaces. Our results demonstrate that we gain a speed dense matching while the implementation is kept simple and straightforward.Dept. of Computer Science. Viewpoint Invariant Dense Matching for Visual Geolocalization
In this paper we propose a novel method for image matching based on dense local features and tailored for visual geolocalization. Dense local features matching is robust against changes in illumination and occlusions, but not against viewpoint shifts which are a fundamental aspect of geolocalization. Our method, called GeoWarp, directly embeds invariance to viewpoint shifts in the process of extracting dense features. This is achieved via a trainable module which learns from the data an invariance that is meaningful for the task of recognizing places. We also devise a new self-supervised loss and two new weakly supervised losses to train this module using only unlabeled data and weak labels. GeoWarp is implemented efficiently as a re-ranking method that can be easily embedded into pre-existing visual geolocalization pipelines. Experimental validation on standard geolocalization benchmarks demonstrates that GeoWarp boosts the accuracy of state-of-the-art retrieval architectures.
