James Cook University, Australia. The aim of the review is to examine the literature where there has been a specific reference to widening participation activities delivered in partnership between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and schools (including Further Education Colleges (FECs)). The literature review includes academic, policy and grey literature in the English language between 1996-2012. The literature review focuses on texts which discuss the value of school partnership working – literature that evaluates, reflects and reports on the impacts of school partnership working has been prioritised

    Continuum Naturalness

We present a novel class of composite Higgs models in which the top and gauge partners responsible for cutting off the Higgs quadratic divergences form a continuum. The continuum states are characterized by their spectral densities, which should have a finite gap for realistic models. We present a concrete example based on a warped extra dimension with a linear dilaton, where this finite gap appears naturally. We derive the spectral densities in this model and calculate the full Higgs potential for a phenomenologically viable benchmark point, with percent level tuning. The continuum top and gauge partners in this model evade all resonance searches at the LHC and yield qualitatively different collider signals

    Continuum Superpartners

In an exact conformal theory there is no particle. The excitations have continuum spectra and are called "unparticles" by Georgi. We consider supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model with approximate conformal sectors. The conformal symmetry is softly broken in the infrared which generates a gap. However, the spectrum can still have a continuum above the gap if there is no confinement. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence this can be achieved with a soft wall in the warped extra dimension. When supersymmetry is broken the superpartners of the Standard Model particles may simply be a continuum above gap. The collider signals can be quite different from the standard supersymmetric scenarios and the experimental searches for the continuum superpartners can be very challenging.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, talk at SCGT09 Workshop, Nagoya, Japan, 8-11 Dec, 200

Nonconservative Nature of the Stresses Developed in a Continuum.

The stresses in an elastic continuum (i.e. a continuum with zero strains after unloading) are classically deemed to be conservative (i.e. their total work all over the continuum is a single-valued function of only the displacement distribution in the continuum). So, internal damping in an elastic continuum appears to be a contradiction in itself. Actually, the total work of the internal stresses all over a continuum does not coincide with the strain energy of the continuum, but also includes the work of the internal body forces formed by the stress derivatives, which only con-tributes to the kinetic energy of the continuum. Owing to this inclusion, the total work of the internal stresses cannot be a single-valued function of only the displacement distribution in the continuum, and hence, the internal stresses must be nonconservative, which indicates internal damping inherent in any continuum whether elastic or not. Only statically deforming continua may possess conservative internal stresses

Uncountable families of prime z-ideals in C_0(R)

Denote by \continuum=2^{\aleph_0} the cardinal of continuum. We construct an intriguing family (P_\alpha: \alpha\in\continuum) of prime zz-ideals in \C_0(\reals) with the following properties: If f∈Pi0f\in P_{i_0} for some i_0\in\continuum, then f∈Pif\in P_i for all but finitely many i\in \continuum; \bigcap_{i\neq i_0} P_i \nsubset P_{i_0} for each \i_0\in \continuum. We also construct a well-ordered increasing chain, as well as a well-ordered decreasing chain, of order type κ\kappa of prime zz-ideals in \C_0(\reals) for any ordinal κ\kappa of cardinality \continuum.Comment: 12 page

Multiscale modeling of rapid granular flow with a hybrid discrete-continuum method

Both discrete and continuum models have been widely used to study rapid granular flow, discrete model is accurate but computationally expensive, whereas continuum model is computationally efficient but its accuracy is doubtful in many situations. Here we propose a hybrid discrete-continuum method to profit from the merits but discard the drawbacks of both discrete and continuum models. Continuum model is used in the regions where it is valid and discrete model is used in the regions where continuum description fails, they are coupled via dynamical exchange of parameters in the overlap regions. Simulation of granular channel flow demonstrates that the proposed hybrid discrete-continuum method is nearly as accurate as discrete model, with much less computational cost
