Augustine's Adoption of the Vulgate Gospels

    Get PDF
This paper examines Augustine's text of the Gospel according to John to trace the process by which he adopted Jerome's revision of the Gospels. An important feature is the distinction between ‘primary citations’ taken from a codex and ‘secondary citations’ likely to have been made from memory, which change affiliation at different rates. Augustine's progress from Old Latin to Vulgate text-types is illustrated by the comparison of selected passages with surviving manuscripts. Textual variants in these citations suggest that Augustine's biblical text has been transmitted accurately

Aspects and problems of the Templars’ religious presence in Medieval Europe from the twelfth to the early fourteenth century

    Get PDF
The medieval military orders were religious institutions whose members had professed to a life of combat and prayer that integrated them into a religious landscape exceedingly defined by diversity. And yet still very little is known about the military orders’ religious functions in the dioceses in which they held ecclesiastical possessions. By focusing on one military in particular, the Order of the Temple, this study aims to achieve two goals: first, to provide a critical overview of recent scholarship in the emerging field of military order (and especially Templar) religion, and second, to examine aspects Templar religious involvement in medieval society in general and the reactions of senior clergymen to the Templars’ religious engagement on parish level in particular. It argues that the Templars proved very keen on expanding their network of parish churches and that in so doing they proved willing to engage with the lay public on a much larger scale than has hitherto been believed

Growth of ZnO thin films on GaAs by pulsed laser deposition

    Get PDF
ZnO thin films have been grown on GaAs substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique with or without a photodeposited SiO2 buffer layer. The presence of the SiO2 layer has a beneficial effect on the crystalline quality of the grown ZnO films. Highly c-axis oriented ZnO films having a full width at half maximum value of the (002) X-ray diffraction line of less than 0.13 ° have been grown on such buffer layers at a substrate temperature of only 350 °C
