Tourism, welfare and real estate market in small open economy: the case of Croatia

    Get PDF
The paper investigates effects of the tourism boom on the real estate market in Croatia. According to the general equilibrium models of the tourism intensive small open economy, the most important benefit of the tourism is reflected in the fixed-factors rents, namely real estate market rents. This paper investigates results of the small open tourism intensive economy theoretical model in the case of the transition and EU accession of the Croatian economy. Analysis is focused on the real exchange rate changes in the tourism sector as the main source of welfare improvements and its effects on the fixed-factor prices in Croatia.tourism, real estate, development, EU enlargement, Croatia

Then the most significant world commodity exchanges are listed and the CME Group INC. in particular, is specified. Then the history of the Czech Republic commodity market is briefly described. After the individual commodity exchanges in the Czech Republic are stated and Českomoravská komoditní burza Kladno (the Českomoravská Commodity Exchange Kladno) and Energetická burza Praha (the Energy Exchange Prague) specified in more detail. The work continues with the appraisal of current situation at the Czech commodity market and its comparison with the first world exchanges from the perspective of executed deals volume and the impact of commodity exchanges on national economy.Prezenční545 - Institut ekonomiky a systémů řízenívelmi dobř

Laser-Driven Particle Acceleration - Improving Performance Through Smart Target Design

    Get PDF
Laser-driven particle acceleration makes use of sub-picosecond, pulsed, high-power laser systems, capable of producing intensities ~10^{19} W/cm^2 at the laser focus to form plasmas, and use ultra-relativistic and nonlinear dynamics to produce quasistatic acceleration fields. This allows electrons to be accelerated to ~100 MeV over sub-centimetre distances, while protons may be accelerated to the ~10 MeV regime. In addition, novel sources of x-ray radiation become available with these schemes. The topics covered in this thesis focus mainly on target normal sheath acceleration of protons in the overdense plasma regime and laser wakefield acceleration of electrons in the underdense regime. An experimental approach leads to novel acceleration concepts and investigations on properties of new target designs. In the overdense plasma regime, hollow microspheres were found to have the potential to enhance the conversion of laser energy into proton energy. The microscopic structure of the material used as target has impact on electron beam filamentation during electron transport through the target bulk. Long-range order was found to result in smoother beams of TNSA-produced protons as compared to amorphous structures. In addition it was demonstrated that short pulse (fs) laser-solid interactions produce magnetic fields, the strength of which can reach 10 kT, mimicking astrophysical conditions. In the underdense regime, it was found that when tailored appropriately, density ramps can provide means of dividing the laser wakefield acceleration process into four steps: nonlinear laser evolution, trapping, bunch transfer into the second bucket, and acceleration, resulting in beams with reduced relative energy spread and divergence compared to self-injection by a nonlinear plasma wave. It was further shown that capillaries can be used to improve efficiency by guiding and refocusing the laser light onto the central axis. Short bursts of soft x-rays were produced inside capillaries. Finally, the use of an asymmetric laser field at the focus facilitated off-axis electron injection into the accelerating phase of a plasma wake oscillation and enhanced x-ray emission

The impact of non-performing loans on the profitability of listed Euro-Mediterranean commercial banks

This paper is based on the unpublished Thesis by Psaila, A. (2019) “The Impact of Non Performing Loans on the profitability of listed Euro-Mediterranean commercial banks” supervised by Dr. S. Grima. An earlier version of this article has been presented in ICABE 2019 www.icabe.grPurpose: To analyze the impact of NPLs on listed commercial bank’s profitability, in particular their ROA (Return on Assets), in the Euro-Mediterranean area. We aim to determine whether the change in the level of NPLs in listed commercial banks is either positively or negatively impacting the ROA of the concerned banks. Furthermore, knowing that the liquidity and the solvency of a bank are both equally important to maintain a robust financial position, a Liquidity (LQDT) and Solvency (SLVT) ratio were considered to help explain the variances with NPLs and ROA. Design/Methodology/Approach: We adopted a purposive research design using panel data (2013-2017) from data published on Thomson Reuters Eikon or annual reports of the 35 listed commercial banks in the Euro-Mediterranean region. We used descriptive statistics and four regression models, namely; the Pooled OLS regression model, Fixed Effects (FE), Random Effects (RE) and the Arellano-Bond (AB), through STATA/IC 15.1. Findings: Findings show that there is a negative impact of NPLs on ROA, indicating that problematic loans negatively impact listed commercial bank’s profitability in the EuroMediterranean region. Also, it was indicated that the Solvency ratio (SLVT) is the only controlling factor that can significantly explain variances within NPLs and ROA. Practical Implications: These results carry with them significant consequences for the bank’s financial stability within the Euro-Mediterranean countries and the role of the risk management function of listed commercial banks.peer-reviewe

Bright X-ray radiation from plasma bubbles in an evolving laser wakefield accelerator

    Get PDF
We show that the properties of the electron beam and bright x-rays produced by a laser wakefield accelerator can be predicted if the distance over which the laser self-focuses and compresses prior to self-injection is taken into account. A model based on oscillations of the beam inside a plasma bubble shows that performance is optimised when the plasma length is matched to the laser depletion length. With a 200~TW laser pulse this results in an x-ray beam with median photon energy of \unit[20]{keV}, >6×108> 6\times 10^{8} photons above \unit[1]{keV} per shot and a peak brightness of \unit[3 \times 10^{22}]{photons~s^{-1}mrad^{-2}mm^{-2} (0.1\% BW)^{-1}}.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Objective Since 2009, Médecins Sans Frontières has implemented a community management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) programme in rural Biraul block, Bihar State, India that has admitted over 10 000 severely malnourished children but has struggled with poor coverage and default rates. With the aim of improving programme outcomes we undertook a qualitative study to understand community perceptions of childhood undernutrition, the CMAM programme and how these affected health-seeking behaviour
