    Improving building energy efficiency: case study

    The main purpose of this study was to conduct a study for improving energy efficiency of an important building in Rome, the Headquarters of the Italian State Monopoly. The study was conducted by comparing conventional analysis tools with innovative ones, in order to evaluate the possible solutions, both structural and plant, aimed at the use of renewable sources and at energy saving. After making a thermo graphic survey, the first and useful step for a good energy audit, conduct building energy was simulated, at first in steady state by the use of a software widely used at the professional level, then in transient state by the use of TRNSYS, a finite difference method software which is able to simulate more accurately conduct building energy. The next step was to propose possible redevelopment of a structural and energy plant that promotes the building energy rating higher, finding the right balance between the energetic and economic aspect. Among the interventions plant, two possible workarounds have been proposed and designed in detail: - installation of a photovoltaic system; - installation of a solar cooling system. Both solutions lead to a reduction of electricity consumption with a significant impact in economic and environmental term

    Measures to enforce mandatory civil building energy efficiency codes in China

    Mandatory civil building energy efficiency codes strictly govern the energy consumption of new buildings in China. As the promotion of building energy efficiency in China has increased in recent years, compliance with mandatory civil building energy efficiency codes has also improved, increasing from less than 10% in 2000 to nearly 100% in 2012, a remarkable achievement. However, because the promotion of energy efficiency strategies in China has followed a unique pattern, some researchers doubt these statistics. In response to these doubts, this paper summarises and analyses the framework of measures implemented by the Chinese government to enforce mandatory building energy efficiency codes. First, the development and implementation of China's mandatory civil building energy efficiency code system is summarised. Second, the building supervision and inspection systems used to assess energy efficiency are introduced and analysed in detail in order to provide a framework for the development of energy policies in other countries. Third, the assessment and reporting processes used to determine compliance rates are reviewed. Finally, the improvement of compliance rates and its impact on building energy savings in China are discussed. Along with the increase in compliance rates in the construction stage from 71% in 2007 to 100% in 2012, the energy savings of new buildings per increased floor area per year increased from 20.4 kWh/m2 to 28.4 kWh/m2. The supervision and inspection systems reported in this paper are the keys to enforcing building energy efficiency codes

    Social Game for Building Energy Efficiency: Utility Learning, Simulation, and Analysis

    We describe a social game that we designed for encouraging energy efficient behavior amongst building occupants with the aim of reducing overall energy consumption in the building. Occupants vote for their desired lighting level and win points which are used in a lottery based on how far their vote is from the maximum setting. We assume that the occupants are utility maximizers and that their utility functions capture the tradeoff between winning points and their comfort level. We model the occupants as non-cooperative agents in a continuous game and we characterize their play using the Nash equilibrium concept. Using occupant voting data, we parameterize their utility functions and use a convex optimization problem to estimate the parameters. We simulate the game defined by the estimated utility functions and show that the estimated model for occupant behavior is a good predictor of their actual behavior. In addition, we show that due to the social game, there is a significant reduction in energy consumption

    The U.S. building stock are under continuous aging and deterioration with deferred maintenance that hinders their operation. Existing buildings account for more than 86% of the annual construction cost in the U.S. and often suffer from lack of acceptable level of thermal comfort, indoor air quality (IAQ) as well as high energy use and costs. Considering future energy constraints (e.g. global warming and energy resources) and cost (e.g. capital cost and operational cost) suggest a need for a paradigm shift in our current understanding of energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) of the older existing building stock. Major technological advances beyond our current knowledge are much needed to design energy efficient buildings and retrofit large numbers of buildings at scale. Our technologies advances should be converged on high performance building enclosure materials, advanced building controls, intelligent building mechanical systems, efficient building lighting fixtures, and smart building plug-load management. For example, currently, majority of the residential buildings and a significant number of commercial buildings in the U.S. do not have any building automation systems, suggesting an emerging need to develop low-cost building automation systems specifically for residential buildings. This presentation covers a wide range of much needed technological advances on different building components and systems in order to design energy efficient buildings or retrofit large numbers of buildings. The aim of this presentation is not only to provide opportunities to reduce energy consumption in older existing buildings but also to shed light on new solutions to harvest energy through buildings

Significant energy savings in buildings are possible through the use of commercially available, cost-effective, energy efficient technologies; yet adoption rates for these technologies are often low. Interviews with industry, property managers, homeowners, and others were used to explore why technology adoption rates are so low. Past Federal efforts to encourage energy efficiency are reviewed, and policy options for encouraging the adoption of energy efficient technologies are discussed
