Technique for assessing vegetation-induced moisture flux, with implications for global climate modeling

The time between storms, the duration of storms, and the storm depths are studied in relation to vegetation controls on the disposition of rainfall. It is proposed that understanding the movement of water between the vegetation and soil (including evapotranspiration and infiltration) will be the gateway for modeling atmospheric flux and improving global climate models. The overall objective goal of the proposed research effort is to develop a field/lab methodology which will provide a better understanding of vegetation induced water movement. Water flow initiated from stem flow of wooded slopes feeds soil water pathways, which in turn feed the deeper ground water system and give rise to stream response. This is balanced by more water inputs via throughfall, where it percolates the soil matrix and allows much greater rates of evapotranspiration and atmospheric/soil moisture flux. This research study seeks to gain an understanding of the effect of vegetation on soil moisture, and the effect of this differential wetting on resulting evapotranspiration and atmospheric flux

A rede de PCHS em Santa Catarina: fatores políticos e econômicos

Este artigo é fruto de pesquisa em andamento para Tese de Doutorado em Geografia, na área de concentração Desenvolvimento Regional e Urbano. Seu objetivo é compreender a rede política e econômica subjacente à formação da rede de PCHs (Pequenas Centrais Hidrelétricas) no estado de Santa Catarina. O artigo primeiramente traz breve histórico da formação do sistema elétrico nacional, com ênfase nas PCHs e em sua consolidação como negócio atrativo e rentável à iniciativa privada, expondo o processo de implantação de uma PCH e evidenciando a legislação e suas consequências, como a configuração atual da rede de PCHs e sua relação com investidores, sua localização e constituição. Os conceitos de sistemas técnicos e redes técnicas permeiam a discussão em busca da compreensão do peso dos fatores políticos e econômicos na formação da rede de PCHs em Santa Catarina.This article is the result of a research in progress for a Doctoral Dissertation in Geography, in the Regional and Urban Development concentration area. Its goal is to understand the political and economic network behind the formation of the PCHs (Small Hydroelectric Power Plants) network in the state of Santa Catarina. The article first presents brief history of the formation of the national electrical system, with emphasis on the PCHs and its consolidation as an attractive and profitable business to private initiative, exposing the process of implementation of a PCH and highlighting the legislation and its consequences, such as the current configuration of the PCHs network and its relationship with investors, its location and constitution. The concepts of technical systems and technical networks permeate the discussion in the search for understanding the weight of political and economic factors in the formation of the PCHs network in Santa Catarina

A Walk in the Woods

A Walk in the Woods is a piece of experimental multimedia consisting visually of images of the Hudson Valley processed through mid-90s computer graphics and aurally of field recordings, monologues, musical motifs, and songs. All of these elements are combined with the use of a game engine to create an interactive experience reminiscent of the MS-DOS video games of the mid to late-90s. Working on this project allowed me to both turn away from the discouragement caused by my unrealized musical plans and return to a place where I had once felt comfortable exploring my curiosity in the topics of media, games, literature, and nature. In pursuing this project, where music is only a fraction of the finished product, I have cast aside my biases toward any specific artistic medium and instead created an experience that (I hope) is greater than the sum of its parts. It has allowed me to incorporate all of my interests into one artistic pursuit: Whether that be studio recording, watercolor painting, journaling, hiking, meditation, composing chamber music, coding, or stargazing, it can all be found here, in A Walk in the Woods

The K-8 Aeronautics Internet Testbook: Project Plan-Year 3

The Project Plan - Year 3 includes: the major tasks and milestones, the assignment of tasks, and the key personnel assigned to each task, a description of the milestone and major task, and the deliverables for the project. Milestones have project numbers ending in "0.0", such as "25.0.0 Phase III Development". Major tasks under that milestone begin with the same first number such as, "25.0.1 Develop Future Of Aeronautics". The assignment of tasks included in the Year 3 project plan contains the names of the key personnel responsible for the task and others participating on the task. Although the PI has the overall and ultimately responsible for all the tasks and milestones, the name of the first individual on a task or milestone is the person responsible for that task.
