    This study investigates the failure mechanisms of unidirectional (UD) HTS40/977-2 toughened resin composites subjected to longitudinal compressive loading. A possible sequence of failure initiation and propagation was proposed based on SEM and optical microscopy observations of failed specimens. The micrographs revealed that the misaligned fibres failed in two points upon reaching maximum micro-bending deformation and two planes of fracture were created to form a kink band. Therefore, fibre microbuckling and fibre kinking models were implemented to predict the compressive strength of LID HTS40/977-2 composite laminate. The analysis identified several parameters that were responsible for the microbuckling and kinking failure mechanisms. The effects of these parameters on the compressive strength of the LID HTS40/977-2 composite systems were discussed.     An analysis is presented of the postbuckling behavior of a simply supported square flat plate with straight edges compressed beyond the buckling load into the plastic range. The method of analysis involves the application of a variational principle of the deformation theory of plasticity in conjunction with computations carried out on a high-speed calculating machine. Numerical results are obtained for several plate proportions and for one material. The results indicate plate strengths greater than those that have been found experimentally on plates that do not satisfy straight-edge conditions. (author

    The Lagrangian multiplier method of finding upper and lower limits to critical stresses of clamped plates

    The theory of Lagrangian multipliers is applied to the problem of finding both upper and lower limits to the true compressive buckling stress of a clamped rectangular plate. The upper and lower limits thus bracket the true stress, which cannot be exactly found by the differential-equation approach. The procedure for obtaining the upper limit, which is believed to be new, presents certain advantages over the classical Rayleigh-Ritz method of finding upper limits. The theory of the lower-limit procedure has been given by Trefftz, but, in the present application, the method differs from that of Trefftz in a way that makes it inherently more quickly convergent. It is expected that in other buckling problems and in some vibration problems the Lagrangian multiplier method of finding upper and lower limits may be advantageously applied to the calculation of buckling stresses and natural frequencies
