Clinical salmonellosis in a finishing herd, a case report

    Get PDF
In a finishing herd of 1020 head clinical salmonellosis was a problem in market age pigs during 2002. During two years, intervention and prevention was done using organic acids through drinking water and feed. Progress of the Salmonella-status was monitored by detecting antibodies against Salmonella. From this case it can be concluded that clinical salmonellosis disappeared and dead loss decreased rapidly after application of the acids. The mean OD% dropped strongly from 40 to below 10. The herd never became entirely Salmonella-free, defined as no samples with OD%\u3e10. The sickbay was a problem location because it was not operated on an all-in/all-out basis. Infection levels differed strongly between stables and compartments. The outbreak in the third quarter of 2002 cost on average 4.60 per pig delivered to the abattoir in that period. The majority of the costs of clinical salmonellosis are due to a reduction of technical results

Global environmental change, local land use impacts and socio-economic response strategies in coastal regions

    Get PDF
This paper addresses the issue of possible land use strategies and responses in coastal zones as a consequence of global environmental change. It willfirst set out some key elements in global change that are of critical importance for the water and land management in such areas. Next, it will map outin more detail the various environmental and socio-economic repercussions of such megatrends. This will then be followed by a discussion of thenecessity to develop proper coastal zone management policy strategies in order to cope with uncertain challenges. In particular, the research needs will be addressed. The paper will then illustrate the potential of integrated coastal zone dynamic and spatial modelling and evaluation, on the basis of anempirical case study for a coastal region. Furthermore, a number of spatio-economic scenarios related to sea level issues in the Netherlands will bepresented. In this context also risk assessment is shortly discussed in relation to sea level rise

Evaluation of Air Transport Benefits for the Czech Republic: Methodology Proposal

    Get PDF
The article's main purpose is to describe the proposed Methodology, which aims to present an approach to expressing the value of the air transport industry in the Czech Republic. This approach methodically divides the primary and secondary effects and finds metrics based on which the value of the air transport can be quantified. The proposed approach is based on equivalent methodological materials by ICAO, FAA, and other organizations describing and analyzing the value of air transports. The calculations are based on open data sources as well as data that are available by request. The methodology also proposes collecting new data to complete the picture of the value of air transport

Air Transport and its Socio-Economic Impacts: Methodology and Research

    Get PDF
The initial motivation for studying and researching air transport socio-economic impacts is quantifying the value that air transport brings to the Czech Republic. The main challenge is to explore a methodology that would describe the macroeconomic and microeconomic relations within the Air transport industry. These relations will define the directions of the market forces flow and thus the Czech Republic’s value. The authors of the paper use an approach that follows methods and standards for collecting and processing economic and statistical data introduced by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Eurostat, and the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO). The authors incorporate economic definitions and standards published by the United Nations under the World Trade Organization (UNWTO) and other accounting and statistical entities, which results in creating a methodical description of chosen relations. The methodical description leads to the quantification of the value. In a practical sense, it is a matter of determining the origin of the data sets according to which the selected relations will be defined. The paper focuses on the expression of Air transport’s primary and secondary effects and the description of the proposals, which will be part of the methodology

Study of the pO2-Sensitivity of the Dendrimeric and Free Forms of Pd-meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin, Incorporated or not in Chitosan-Based Nanoparticles

The concentration of oxygen and its rate of consumption are important factors in certain medical treatments, such as radiotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Measuring the tissue concentration of oxygen or its partial pressure (pO2) can be achieved by taking advantage of the oxygen-dependent luminescence lifetime of certain molecules, including metallo-porphyrin derivatives, due to the oxygen-dependent quenching of their triplet state. Unfortunately, most of these porphyrin derivatives are phototoxic due to the O21? produced in the pO2 measurement procedure. The aim of this work was to characterize new nanoparticle oxygen sensors, where the palladium-porhyrin molecule (Pd-meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) or its dendrimer form, is incorporated into an oxygen permeable matrix of chitosan-based colloidal particles. It was hypothesized that the reactive O21? produced during the pO2 measurement would react inside the particle thus reducing its toxicity for the surrounding tissue, whereas the 3? ground state of O2, that is to be measured, would diffuse freely in the peptide. We observed that the incorporation of the porphyrin in the nanoparticles resulted in a reduction of the phosphorescence lifetime sensitivity to pO2 by about one order of magnitude. Our studies of these new sensors indicate that the oxygen concentration can be measured in aqueous solutions with a precision of ±20% for oxygen concentrations ranging between 0% and 25%
