Alternate islands of multiple isochronous chains in wave-particle interactions
We analyze the dynamics of a relativistic particle moving in a uniform
magnetic field and perturbed by a standing electrostatic wave. We show that a
pulsed wave produces an infinite number of perturbative terms with the same
winding number, which may generate islands in the same region of phase space.
As a consequence, the number of isochronous island chains varies as a function
of the wave parameters. We observe that in all the resonances, the number of
chains is related to the amplitude of the various resonant terms. We determine
analytically the position of the periodic points and the number of island
chains as a function of the wave number and wave period. Such information is
very important when one is concerned with regular particle acceleration, since
it is necessary to adjust the initial conditions of the particle to obtain the
maximum acceleration.Comment: Submitte
Wave-particle interactions in a long traveling wave tube with upgraded helix
We investigate the interaction of electromagnetic waves and electron beams in
a 4 meters long traveling wave tube (TWT). The device is specially designed to
simulate beam-plasma experiments without appreciable noise. This TWT presents
an upgraded slow wave structure (SWS) that results in more precise measurements
and makes new experiments possible. We introduce a theoretical model describing
wave propagation through the SWS and validated by the experimental dispersion
relation, impedance, phase and group velocities. We analyze nonlinear effects
arising from the beam-wave interaction, such as the modulation of the electron
beam and the wave growth and saturation process. When the beam current is low,
the wave growth coefficient and saturation amplitude follow the linear theory
predictions. However, for high values of current, nonlinear space charge
effects become important and these parameters deviate from the linear
predictions, tending to a constant value. After saturation, we also observe
trapping of the beam electrons, which alters the wave amplitude along the TWT.Comment: Submitted for publicatio
Staphylococcus aureus in former Portuguese colonies from Africa and the Far East: missing data to help fill the world map
AbstractThe aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal carriage among patients and healthcare workers in Angola (ANG), São Tomé and Príncipe (STP), Cape Verde (CV) and East Timor (ET), and to characterize the antimicrobial susceptibility, virulence content and population structure of all S. aureus. Despite the importance of MRSA as a major human pathogen, data from these former Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia are scarce. A total of 2065 nasal swabs recovered between 2010–14 were included in the study. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and molecular characterization of S. aureus showed: (i) a very high MRSA prevalence in ANG (61.6%), moderate in STP (25.5%), low in CV (5.6%) and null in ET; (ii) a high prevalence of Panton–Valentine leukocidin in STP (36.8%), ET (29.2%) and CV (28.3%) contrasting with ANG (7.9%); (iii) ST5-SCCmecIVa, ST8-IV/V and ST5-VI were the major MRSA clones in ANG (65.2%), STP (44.8%) and CV (50%), respectively; (iv) a high resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in ANG (66.5%) and STP (50.9%), to rifampin in ANG (77.3%), and to tetracycline in STP (26.3%) and ET (20.8%); (v) three major methicillin-susceptible S. aureus clones (ST15, ST508, ST152) were present in all four countries. Age <18 years (OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.24–3.31), previous surgery (OR 2.45, 95% CI 1.24–4.83), no smoking (OR 4.04, 95% CI 1.05–15.50), and longer hospitalization (OR 2.53, 95% CI 1.49–4.28) were risk factors for MRSA carriage. This study provided the first comprehensive overview on MRSA in former Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia, missing data in the world map
Pseudoscalars Mesons in Hot, Dense Matter
Phase transitions in hot and dense matter and the in--medium behavior of
pseudoscalar mesons () are investigated, in the framework of the three flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio
model, including the 't Hooft interaction, which breaks the symmetry.
Three different scenarios are considered: zero density and finite temperature,
zero temperature and finite density in quark matter with different degrees of
strangeness, and finite temperature and density. At T=0, the role of strange
valence quarks in the medium is discussed, in connection with the phase
transition and the mesonic behavior. It is found that the appearance of strange
quarks, above certain densities, leads to meaningful changes in different
observables, especially in matter with \betaT-\rho$ plane is analyzed in connection with possible signatures
of restoration of symmetries.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures, PRC versio
