    Early Pulmonary Interstitial Emphysema in Preterm Neonates-Respiratory Management and Case Report in Nonventilated Very Low Birth Weight Twins

    Early pulmonary interstitial emphysema in extreme preterm neonates is closely linked with respiratory distress syndrome and exposure to mechanical ventilation. In severe cases, maintaining adequate gas exchange aiming to avoid further lung damage and other neonatal morbidities associated with systemic/pulmonary hypoperfusion, prolonged hypoxia, and respiratory acidosis can be challenging and requires in-depth knowledge into the pathophysiology of the disease. Herein, we report on very low birth weight twins who developed early pulmonary interstitial emphysema during noninvasive respiratory support. We further review the current evidence from the literature, specifically addressing on possible preventive measures and the respiratory management options of this acute pulmonary disease in high-risk neonates

    Editorial to the Issue on Legitimization of Private and Public Regulation: Past and Present

    This thematic issue brings together research from political science and legal history about legitimacy discourses covering different forms of public-private co-regulation and private self-regulation, domestic and transnational, past and present. These forms of governance highlight the important role of non-state actors in exercising public authority. There has been a growing debate about the legitimacy of non-state actors setting and enforcing norms and providing public goods and services. However, the focus of this thematic issue is not on developing abstract criteria of legitimacy. Rather, the authors analyze legitimacy discourses around different cases of privatized or partly privatized forms of governance from the early 20th century until today. Legitimacy is subject to empirical and not normative analysis. Legitimacy discourses are analyzed in order to shed light on the legitimacy conceptions that actors hold, what they consider as legitimate institutions, and based on what criteria. The particular focus of this thematic issue is to examine whether the significance of democratic legitimacy is decreasing as the importance of regulation exercised by private actors is increasing

    Eignung von Bradyrhizobien-Impfpräparaten zur Inokulation von Sojabohnen

    Wie jede andere Leguminose, kann auch die Sojabohne (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) mit Hilfe von Soja-spezifischen Knöllchenbakterien (Bradyrhizobium japonicum) Luft-Stickstoff binden. Da die Bradyrhizobien natürlicherweise nicht in den mitteleuropäischen Böden vorkommen, müssen die Samen der Sojabohne mit kommerziell verfügbaren Bradyrhizobien-Impfpräparaten inokuliert werden. Beim Anbau hat sich in den letzten Jahren jedoch gezeigt, dass die Inokulation vor allem in kühleren Klimaten bei einzelnen Präparaten zu unzuverlässiger Knöllchenbildung und damit ungenügender Stickstoffbindung führen kann. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Eignung kommerziell verfügbarer Bradyrhizobien-Impfpräparate zur Inokulation der Sojabohne zu prüfen

    ABILITY OF COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE SOYBEAN BRADYRHIZOBIA INOCULANTS FOR COOL GROWING CONDITIONS IN CENTRAL EUROPE

    In Central Europe the inoculation of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) with different Bradyrhizobia inoculants has led to unsatisfying nodulation results under low temperature conditions. The aim of this study was to test the capacity of commercially available inoculants under cool growing conditions in Central Europe. In 2011 and 2012 four Bradyrhizobia inoculants were tested on three early soybean varieties in a field trial in Germany. The number of nodules, yield and protein content were assessed. Two years data showed a successful nodulation of Product 4, Product 3 and Product 2 while Product 1 cannot be recommended. Independently of soybean variety, all of the three successful inoculants can be advised regarding grain yield. Protein content and protein yield depend on the combination of inoculants and soybean variety. Over the years Product 4 was the most reliable inoculant

    Applying FP_ILM to the retrieval of geometry-dependent effective Lambertian equivalent reflectivity (GE_LER) daily maps from UVN satellite measurements

    The retrieval of trace gas, cloud, and aerosol measurements from ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared (UVN) sensors requires precise information on surface properties that are traditionally obtained from Lambertian equivalent reflectivity (LER) climatologies. The main drawbacks of using LER climatologies for new satellite missions are that (a) climatologies are typically based on previous missions with significantly lower spatial resolutions, (b) they usually do not account fully for satellite-viewing geometry dependencies characterized by bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) effects, and (c) climatologies may differ considerably from the actual surface conditions especially with snow/ice scenarios. In this paper we present a novel algorithm for the retrieval of geometry-dependent effective Lambertian equivalent reflectivity (GE_LER) from UVN sensors; the algorithm is based on the full-physics inverse learning machine (FP_ILM) retrieval. Radiances are simulated using a radiative transfer model that takes into account the satellite-viewing geometry, and the inverse problem is solved using machine learning techniques to obtain the GE_LER from satellite measurements. The GE_LER retrieval is optimized not only for trace gas retrievals employing the DOAS algorithm, but also for the large amount of data from existing and future atmospheric Sentinel satellite missions. The GE_LER can either be deployed directly for the computation of air mass factors (AMFs) using the effective scene approximation or it can be used to create a global gapless geometry-dependent LER (G3_LER) daily map from the GE_LER under clear-sky conditions for the computation of AMFs using the independent pixel approximation. The GE_LER algorithm is applied to measurements of TROPOMI launched in October 2017 on board the EU/ESA Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) mission. The TROPOMI GE_LER/G3_LER results are compared with climatological OMI and GOME-2 LER datasets and the advantages of using GE_LER/G3_LER are demonstrated for the retrieval of total ozone from TROPOMI

    Tropospheric ozone retrieval by a combination of TROPOMI/S5P measurements with BASCOE assimilated data

    We present a new tropospheric ozone dataset based on TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI)/Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) total ozone measurements combined with stratospheric ozone data from the Belgian Assimilation System for Chemical ObsErvations (BASCOE) constrained by assimilating ozone observations from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS). The BASCOE stratospheric data are interpolated to the S5P observations and subtracted from the TROPOMI total ozone data. The difference is equal to the tropospheric ozone residual column from the surface up to the tropopause. The tropospheric ozone columns are retrieved at the full spatial resolution of the TROPOMI sensor (5.5×3.5 km2) with daily global coverage. Compared to the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications 2 (OMPS-MERRA-2) data, a global mean positive bias of 3.3 DU is found for the analysed period April 2018 to June 2020. A small negative bias of about −0.91 DU is observed in the tropics relative to the operational TROPOMI tropical tropospheric data based on the convective cloud differential (CCD) algorithm throughout the same period. The new tropospheric ozone data (S5P-BASCOE) are compared to a set of globally distributed ozonesonde data integrated up to the tropopause level. We found 2254 comparisons with cloud-free TROPOMI observations within 25 km of the stations. In the global mean, S5P-BASCOE deviates by 2.6 DU from the integrated ozonesondes. Depending on the latitude the S5P-BASCOE deviate from the sondes and between −4.8 and 7.9 DU, indicating a good agreement. However, some exceptional larger positive deviations up to 12 DU are found, especially in the northern polar regions (north of 70∘). The monthly mean tropospheric column and time series for selected areas showed the expected spatial and temporal pattern, such as the wave one structure in the tropics or the seasonal cycle, including a summer maximum, in the mid-latitudes.</p

    Multidimensional assessment of infant, parent and staff outcomes during a family centered care enhancement project in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit:study protocol of a longitudinal cohort study

    Background: The therapeutic advances and progress in the care for preterm infants have enabled the regular survival of very immature infants. However, the high burden of lifelong sequelae following premature delivery constitutes an ongoing challenge. Regardless of premature delivery, parental mental health and a healthy parent–child relationship were identified as essential prerogatives for normal infant development. Family centered care (FCC) supports preterm infants and their families by respecting the particular developmental, social and emotional needs in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Due to the large variations in concepts and goals of different FCC initiatives, scientific data on the benefits of FCC for the infant and family outcome are sparse and its effects on the clinical team need to be elaborated. Methods: This prospective single centre longitudinal cohort study enrols preterm infants ≤ 32 + 0 weeks of gestation and/or birthweight ≤ 1500 g and their parents at the neonatal department of the Giessen University Hospital, Giessen, Germany. Following a baseline period, the rollout of additional FCC elements is executed following a stepwise 6-months approach that covers the NICU environment, staff training, parental education and psychosocial support for parents. Recruitment is scheduled over a 5.5. year period from October 2020 to March 2026. The primary outcome is corrected gestational age at discharge. Secondary infant outcomes include neonatal morbidities, growth, and psychomotor development up to 24 months. Parental outcome measures are directed towards parental skills and satisfaction, parent-infant-interaction and mental health. Staff issues are elaborated with particular focus on the item workplace satisfaction. Quality improvement steps are monitored using the Plan- Do- Study- Act cycle method and outcome measures cover the infant, the parents and the medical team. The parallel data collection enables to study the interrelation between these three important areas of research. Sample size calculation was based on the primary outcome. Discussion: It is scientifically impossible to allocate improvements in outcome measures to individual enhancement steps of FCC that constitutes a continuous change in NICU culture and attitudes covering diverse areas of change. Therefore, our trial is designed to allocate childhood, parental and staff outcome measures during the stepwise changes introduced by a FCC intervention program.     Almost one year of TROPOMI/S5P total ozone column data: global ground-based validation

    Póster presentado en: ATMOS 2018, celebrado en Salzburgo (Austria) del 26 al 29 de noviembre de 2018.In this work we present the validation results of almost one year of TROPOMI Near Real Time (NRTI) and OFFLine (OFFL) data against ground-based quality-assured Brewer and Dobson total ozone column (TOC) measurements deposited in the World Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation Data Center (WOUDC). Additionally, comparisons to Brewer measurements from the European Brewer Network (EUBREWNET) and the Canadian Network are performed, as well as to twilight zenith-sky measurements obtained with ZSL-DOAS (Zenith Scattered Light Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) instruments, that form part of the SAOZ network (Système d'Analyse par Observation Zénitale) of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC). Through the comparison of the TROPOMI measurements to the total ozone ground-based measurements from stations that are distributed globally, as the background truth, the dependence of the new instrument on latitude, cloud properties, solar zenith and viewing angles, among others, is examined. Validation results show that the mean bias and the standard deviation of the percentage difference between TROPOMI and QA ground TOC meet the product requirements
