Failure regime in (1+1) dimensions in fibrous materials
In this paper, we introduce a model for fracture in fibrous materials that
takes into account the rupture height of the fibers, in contrast with previous
models. Thus, we obtain the profile of the fracture and calculate its
roughness, defined as the variance around the mean height. We investigate the
relationship between the fracture roughness and the fracture toughness.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.eps, Revte
Longitudinal broadening of near side jets due to parton cascade
Longitudinal broadening along direction on near side in
two-dimensional () di-hadron correlation
distribution has been studied for central Au+Au collisions at =
200 GeV, within a dynamical multi-phase transport model. It was found that the
longitudinal broadening is generated by a longitudinal flow induced by strong
parton cascade in central Au+Au collisions, in comparison with p+p collisions
at = 200 GeV. The longitudinal broadening may shed light on the
information about strongly interacting partonic matter at RHIC.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; accepted by Eur. Phys. J.
Unsupervised Fiber Bundles Registration using Weighted Measures Geometric Demons
International audienceBrain image registration aims at reducing anatomical variability across subjects to create a common space for group analysis. Multi-modal approaches intend to minimize cortex shape variations along with internal structures, such as fiber bundles. A di ficulty is that it requires a prior identi fication of these structures, which remains a challenging task in the absence of a complete reference atlas. We propose an extension of the log-Geometric Demons for jointly registering images and fi ber bundles without the need of point or ber correspondences. By representing fi ber bundles as Weighted Measures we can register subjects with di fferent numbers of fiber bundles. The ef ficacy of our algorithm is demonstrated by registering simultaneously T1 images and between 37 and 88 ber bundles depending on each of the ten subject used. We compare results with a multi-modal T1 + Fractional Anisotropy (FA) and a tensor-based registration algorithms and obtain superior performance with our approach
Immunoregulatory effects of testosterone supplementation combined with exercise training in men with Inclusion Body Myositis: A double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, cross‐over trial
Objectives
Sporadic Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM) is an inflammatory muscle disease affecting individuals over the age of 45, leading to progressive muscle wasting, disability and loss of independence. Histologically, IBM is characterised by immune changes including myofibres expressing major histocompatibility complex molecules and invaded by CD8+ T cells and macrophages, and by degenerative changes including protein aggregates organised in inclusion bodies, rimmed vacuoles and mitochondrial abnormalities. There is currently no cure, and regular exercise is currently the only recognised treatment effective at limiting muscle weakening, atrophy and loss of function. Testosterone exerts anti-inflammatory effects, inhibiting effector T-cell differentiation and pro-inflammatory cytokine production.
Methods
We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial in men with IBM, to assess whether a personalised progressive exercise training combined with application of testosterone, reduced the inflammatory immune response associated with this disease over and above exercise alone. To assess intervention efficacy, we immunophenotyped blood immune cells by flow cytometry, and measured serum cytokines and chemokines by Luminex immunoassay.
Results
Testosterone supplementation resulted in modest yet significant count reduction in the classical monocyte subset as well as eosinophils. Testosterone-independent immunoregulatory effects attributed to exercise included altered proportions of some monocyte, T- and B-cell subsets, and reduced IL-12, IL-17, TNF-α, MIP-1β and sICAM-1 in spite of interindividual variability.
Conclusion
Overall, our findings indicate anti-inflammatory effects of exercise training in IBM patients, whilst concomitant testosterone supplementation provides some additional changes. Further studies combining testosterone and exercise would be worthwhile in larger cohorts and longer testosterone administration periods
Analysis of particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions within a two-source statistical model
The experimental data on hadron yields and ratios in central lead-lead and
gold-gold collisions at 158 AGeV/ (SPS) and AGeV (RHIC),
respectively, are analysed within a two-source statistical model of an ideal
hadron gas. A comparison with the standard thermal model is given. The two
sources, which can reach the chemical and thermal equilibrium separately and
may have different temperatures, particle and strangeness densities, and other
thermodynamic characteristics, represent the expanding system of colliding
heavy ions, where the hot central fireball is embedded in a larger but cooler
fireball. The volume of the central source increases with rising bombarding
energy. Results of the two-source model fit to RHIC experimental data at
midrapidity coincide with the results of the one-source thermal model fit,
indicating the formation of an extended fireball, which is three times larger
than the corresponding core at SPS.Comment: 6 pages, REVTEX
Joint T1 and Brain Fiber Log-Demons Registration Using Currents to Model Geometry
International audienceWe present an extension of the diffeomorphic Geometric Demons algorithm which combines the iconic registration with geometric constraints. Our algorithm works in the log-domain space, so that one can efficiently compute the deformation field of the geometry. We represent the shape of objects of interest in the space of currents which is sensitive to both location and geometric structure of objects. Currents provides a distance between geometric structures that can be defined without specifying explicit point-to-point correspondences. We demonstrate this framework by registering simultaneously T1 images and 65 fiber bundles consistently extracted in 12 subjects and compare it against non-linear T1, tensor, and multi-modal T1+ Fractional Anisotropy (FA) registration algorithms. Results show the superiority of the Log-domain Geometric Demons over their purely iconic counterparts
Sub-barrier capture with quantum diffusion approach: actinide-based reactions
With the quantum diffusion approach the behavior of capture cross sections
and mean-square angular momenta of captured systems are revealed in the
reactions with deformed nuclei at subbarrier energies. The calculated results
are in a good agreement with existing experimental data. With decreasing
bombarding energy under the barrier the external turning point of the
nucleusnucleus potential leaves the region of short-range nuclear interaction
and action of friction. Because of this change of the regime of interaction, an
unexpected enhancement of the capture cross section is expected at bombarding
energies far below the Coulomb barrier. This effect is shown its worth in the
dependence of mean-square angular momentum of captured system on the bombarding
energy. From the comparison of calculated and experimental capture cross
sections, the importance of quasifission near the entrance channel is shown for
the actinide-based reactions leading to superheavy nuclei.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures, Regular Articl
Hydrodynamics and Flow
In this lecture note, we present several topics on relativistic hydrodynamics
and its application to relativistic heavy ion collisions. In the first part we
give a brief introduction to relativistic hydrodynamics in the context of heavy
ion collisions. In the second part we present the formalism and some
fundamental aspects of relativistic ideal and viscous hydrodynamics. In the
third part, we start with some basic checks of the fundamental observables
followed by discussion of collective flow, in particular elliptic flow, which
is one of the most exciting phenomenon in heavy ion collisions at relativistic
energies. Next we discuss how to formulate the hydrodynamic model to describe
dynamics of heavy ion collisions. Finally, we conclude the third part of the
lecture note by showing some results from ideal hydrodynamic calculations and
by comparing them with the experimental data.Comment: 40 pages, 35 figures; lecture given at the QGP Winter School, Jaipur,
