Quantitative effects of formulation process variables on antitumor activities of doxorubicin nanoparticles
Background and objectives: Drug therapy failure is still a recurring clinical phenomenon attributed to a host of factors among which are formulations shortcomings resulting from processing and manufacturing variables leading to different therapeutic effectiveness of pharmaceutical products of the same chemical entity but manufactured by different companies. This study was aimed at investigating the effects of process variable on therapeutics activities of doxorubicin nanoparticles using a 23 factorial experimental design to study the effects of three independent variables, the production technique (A), the homogenization speed (B) and the drying technique (C) on the therapeutic activity(antitumor) of doxorubicin nanoparticles.Materials and methods: Eight (8) different formulations, (DX1-8) of doxorubicin nanoparticles were prepared using both single and double emulsion evaporation techniques. The yield and the amount of drug entrapped were mathematically calculated. The release profiles of the formulations were determined using a type II USP dissolution apparatus and a UV spectrophotometer. Estimations of therapeutic effectiveness of the formulations were carried out through cell mortality assay using 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) technique. Results and conclusion: Doxorubicin nanoparticles formulations were successfully prepared with yield ranging from 72.9-90.5% indicating high scale up possibility. The differences in antitumor activities observed were significant (p? 0.05), which may be as a result of marked differences in percentage drug entrapped and drug release profile of the formulations. The factors investigated in this study independently and jointly affected the antitumor activities of the doxorubicin formulations significantly and were ranked, A ? AC ? C ? ABC ? B. This study clearly linked therapeutic effectiveness (cytotoxicity/antitumor) of doxorubicin nanoparticles to the manufacturing variables. There is therefore the need for pharmaceutical manufacturers to optimize their manufacturing processes to prevent drug therapy failure.
Is immunisation education in midwifery degrees adequate?
© 2018, © 2018 The Author(s). Published with license by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Maternal and childhood vaccination decisions begin during pregnancy, and midwives are an important information resource. Their role is set to increase with the expansion of maternal immunisations into new jurisdictions, and new maternal vaccines in development. Meanwhile, other health providers are orienting parents towards vaccine acceptance, using strategies at odds with midwifery norms around information provision and maternal autonomy. To better understand and address the implications of these developments, we conducted a pilot study to ascertain how midwifery students in Australian universities are taught about immunisation, including dedicated time, assessment, who teaches it, and when. We also analysed teaching materials, looking for messaging regarding the importance of vaccination and whether midwives should be advocating for it. We found that education on immunisation comprises less than four hours of the degree, and encountered the norm of midwives informing about rather than recommending vaccination. The considerations we brought to our small project, and what it illuminated, suggest that midwifery university education is an important arena for developing future vaccine advocates. However, midwifery ideology and professional practice mean that such efforts will be challenging, and must commence from a position of respect for the values midwives hold

Human Capital Development and Poverty in Nigeria, 1960 - 2009: An Econometric Assessment
This study examined the relationship between human capital development and poverty in Nigeria using data spanning 1960-2009. The human capital development variable was measured using conventional variables i.e. education and health, with government expenditures on education and health being used as the proxies. Other variables on communication, transportation and utility were used as control. A readily available poverty measure, gross domestic product per capita was used to capture poverty status. This is based on the fact that poverty is mostly measured in monetary terms captured by income or consumption per capita or household in the absence of direct primary data observation. After carrying out the diagnostic tests, the cointegration analysis carried out proved that, to some extent, a cointegrating relationship exists between the poverty measure and human capital development indicators. However, the Granger causality estimation results show that both education and health expenditures are fundamental in reducing poverty level based on the uni-directional causality while no causality runs from poverty status to the indicators. Keywords: Poverty, Human Capital Development, Cointegration, Granger Causalit
Impact of Blending on Strength Distribution of Ambient Cured Metakaolin and Palm Oil Fuel Ash Based Geopolymer Mortar
This paper investigates the influence of blending of metakaolin with silica rich palm oil fuel ash (POFA) on the strength distribution of geopolymer mortar. The broadness of strength distribution of quasi-brittle to brittle materials depends strongly on the existence of flaws such as voids, microcracks, and impurities in the material. Blending of materials containing alumina and silica with the objective of improving the performance of geopolymer makes comprehensive characterization necessary. The Weibull distribution is used to study the strength distribution and the reliability of geopolymer mortar specimens prepared from 100% metakaolin, 50% and 70% palm and cured under ambient condition. Mortar prisms and cubes were used to test the materials in flexure and compression, respectively, at 28 days and the results were analyzed using Weibull distribution. In flexure, Weibull modulus increased with POFA replacement, indicating reduced broadness of strength distribution from an increased homogeneity of the material. Modulus, however, decreased with increase in replacement of POFA in the specimens tested under compression. It is concluded that Weibull distribution is suitable for analyses of the blended geopolymer system. While porous microstructure is mainly responsible for flexural failure, heterogeneity of reaction relics is responsible for the compression failure
Analytical determination of load resistance value for MQ-series gas sensors: MQ-6 as case study
The MQ-series gas sensors are attractive candidates in the area of gas concentration sensing due to their high sensitivity and low cost. Even though the sensor circuit sensitivity and sensor power dissipation level both depend on load resistance, the process of the load resistance selection has not been well researched, hence the need for this study. The derivation of model equations for determining the sensor circuit sensitivity and sensor power dissipation is presented. The derived equations were used to investigate a typical scenario of MQ-6 gas sensor under the influence of liquified petroleum gas (LPG). The variation of sensitivity with load resistance and that of power dissipation with sensor resistance were parametrically investigated. The load resistance that yields maximum sensor circuit sensitivity with the maximum sensor power dissipation less than the set threshold is the candidate resistance for the sensor circuit. The 20 kΩ load resistance recommended for MQ-6 in the datasheet was authenticated in this study, yielding the maximum possible sensor circuit sensitivity and tolerable sensor power dissipation of 0.195 mV/ppm and 3.125×10−4 W, respectively
