    Recommendations for Using Online Social Networking Technologies to Reduce Inaccurate Online Health Information

    This short report highlights patients' increasing use of the Internet and online social networking technologies to seek health information, and the consequences of gaining information from sites with biased or inaccurate health information. Reflecting on the utility of online social networking technologies for reaching large audiences, practical advice is listed for how health providers can use these technologies to improve the quality of health information that patients receive over the Internet. We recommend that health providers use online social networking technologies to communicate with patients and health information consumers and direct them to reputable sources with accurate health information. We outline the steps to this approach

    Ecological IVIS design : using EID to develop a novel in-vehicle information system

    New in-vehicle information systems (IVIS) are emerging which purport to encourage more environment friendly or ‘green’ driving. Meanwhile, wider concerns about road safety and in-car distractions remain. The ‘Foot-LITE’ project is an effort to balance these issues, aimed at achieving safer and greener driving through real-time driving information, presented via an in-vehicle interface which facilitates the desired behaviours while avoiding negative consequences. One way of achieving this is to use ecological interface design (EID) techniques. This article presents part of the formative human-centred design process for developing the in-car display through a series of rapid prototyping studies comparing EID against conventional interface design principles. We focus primarily on the visual display, although some development of an ecological auditory display is also presented. The results of feedback from potential users as well as subject matter experts are discussed with respect to implications for future interface design in this field

    Measuring Time-Sensitive and Topic-Specific Influence in Social Networks with LSTM and Self-Attention.

    Influence measurement in social networks is vital to various real-world applications, such as online marketing and political campaigns. In this paper, we investigate the problem of measuring time-sensitive and topic-specific influence based on streaming texts and dynamic social networks. A user's influence can change rapidly in response to a new event and vary on different topics. For example, the political influence of Douglas Jones increased dramatically after winning the Alabama special election, and then rapidly decreased after the election week. During the same period, however, Douglas Jones' influence on sports remained low. Most existing approaches can only model the influence based on static social network structures and topic distributions. Furthermore, as popular social networking services embody many features to connect their users, multi-typed interactions make it hard to learn the roles that different interactions play when propagating information. To address these challenges, we propose a Time-sensitive and Topic-specific Influence Measurement (TTIM) method, to jointly model the streaming texts and dynamic social networks. We simulate the influence propagation process with a self-attention mechanism to learn the contributions of different interactions and track the influence dynamics with a matrix-adaptive long short-term memory. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to measure time-sensitive and topic-specific influence. Furthermore, the TTIM model can be easily adapted to supporting online learning which consumes constant training time on newly arrived data for each timestamp. We comprehensively evaluate the proposed TTIM model on five datasets from Twitter and Reddit. The experimental results demonstrate promising performance compared to the state-of-the-art social influence analysis models and the potential of TTIM in visualizing influence dynamics and topic distribution

    Who consults chiropractors in Victoria, Australia?: Reasons for attending, general health and lifestyle habits of chiropractic patients

    Background COAST (Chiropractic Observational and Analysis STudy) reported the clinical practices of chiropractors. The aims of this study were to: 1) describe the chiropractic patient demographic and health characteristics; 2) describe patient-stated reasons for visiting a chiropractor; 3) describe chiropractic patient lifestyle characteristics; 4) compare, where possible, chiropractic patient characteristics to the general Australian population. Methods Fifty-two chiropractors in Victoria, Australia, provided information for up to 100 consecutive encounters. If patients attended more than once during the 100 encounters, only data from their first encounter were included in this study. Where possible patient characteristics were compared with the general Australian population. Results Data were collected from December 2010 to September 2012. Data were provided for 4464 encounters, representing 3287 unique individuals. The majority of chiropractic encounters were for musculoskeletal conditions or for wellness/maintenance. The majority of patient comorbidities were musculoskeletal, circulatory or endocrine/metabolic in nature. Eight hundred chiropractic patients (57 %, 95 % CI: 53–61) described their self-reported health as excellent or very good and 138 patients (10 %, 95 % CI: 8–12) as fair or poor. Seventy-one percent of adult male patients (18 years and older), and 53 % of adult female patients, were overweight or obese. Fourteen percent (n = 188, 95 % CI: 12–16) were current smokers and 27 % (n  = 359, 95 % CI: 24–31) did not meet Australian alcohol consumption guidelines. Less than half of the chiropractic patients participated in vigorous exercise at least twice per week. Approximately 20 % ate one serving of vegetables or less each day, and approximately 50 % ate one serve of fruit or less each day. Compared to the general Australian population, chiropractic patients were less likely to smoke, less likely to be obese and more likely to describe their health in positive terms. However, many patients were less likely to meet alcohol consumption guidelines, drinking more than is recommended. Conclusions In general, chiropractic patients had more positive health and lifestyle characteristics than the Australian population. However, there were a significant proportion of chiropractic patients who did not meet guideline recommendations about lifestyle habits and there is an opportunity for chiropractors to reinforce public health messages with their patients

    Global patterns of extinction risk and conservation needs for Rodentia and Eulipotyphla

    AIM: To explore global patterns in spatial aggregations of species richness, vulnerability and data deficiency for Rodentia and Eulipotyphla. To evaluate the adequacy of existing protected area (PA) network for these areas. To provide a focus for local conservation initiatives. LOCATION: Global. METHODS: Total species, globally threatened (GT) species, and Data Deficient (DD) species richness were calculated for a 1° resolution grid. Correspondence analyses between global species richness against GT species richness were performed. To assess PA network adequacy, a correspondence analysis was conducted to identify areas of high richness and GT species richness that have poor protection. RESULTS: Six hotspots were identified for GT eulipotyphlans, encompassing 40% of GT species. Three of these contain higher numbers of GT species than would be expected based on their overall species richness. Ten priority regions were identified for GT rodents, which together contain 34% of all GT species. Six contain higher numbers of GT rodent species than would be expected based on their overall species richness. For DD species, 15% of DD eulipotyphlans were represented within three priority regions, whereas 18 were identified for rodents, capturing 53% of all DD species. Areas containing lower numbers of protected GT eulipotyphlan species than expected include Mexico; Cameroonian Highlands; Albertine Rift; Tanzania; Kenya; Ethiopia; western Asia; India; and Sri Lanka. Areas containing lower numbers of protected GT rodent species than expected are Borneo, Sumatra and Sulawesi. Five eulipotyphlans and 44 rodents have ranges which fall completely outside of PAs. MAIN CONCLUSION: Rodentia and Eulipotyphla priority regions should be considered separately to one another and to other mammals. This analysis approach allows us to pinpoint and delineate geographical areas which represent key regions at a global level for rodents and eulipotyphlans, in order to facilitate conservation, field research and capacity building at a local level

    Gut microbial activity as influenced by fiber digestion: dynamic metabolomics in an in vitro colon simulator

    Understanding the interaction between the gut microbial activity and the host is essential, and in vitro models are being used to test and develop hypotheses regarding the impact of food components/drugs on the human gut ecosystem. However, while in vitro models provide excellent possibilities for dynamic investigations, studies have commonly been restricted to analyses of few, targeted metabolites. In the present study, we employed NMR-based metabolomics combined with multilevel data analysis as a tool to characterize the impact of polydextrose (PDX) fiber on the in vitro derived fecal metabolome. This approach enabled us to identify and quantify the fiber-induced response on several fecal metabolites; we observed higher levels of butyrate, acetate, propionate, succinate, N-acetyl compound and a lower level of amino acids (leucine, valine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, and lysine), valerate, formate, isovalerate and trimethylamine among the PDX-treated sample compared to the control samples. In addition, by the application of multilevel data analysis we were able to examine the specific inter-individual variations, and caprylic acid was identified to be the main marker of distinct microbial compositions among the subjects. Our work is expected to provide a useful approach to understand the metabolic impact of potential prebiotic compounds and get deeper insight into the molecular regulation of gut-microbe activities in the complex gut system

    Point-of-care screening for a current Hepatitis C virus infection: influence on uptake of a concomitant offer of HIV screening

    Eliminating hepatitis C as a public health threat requires an improved understanding of how to increase testing uptake. We piloted point-of-care testing (POCT) for a current HCV infection in an inner-city Emergency Department (ED) and assessed the influence on uptake of offering concomitant screening for HIV. Over four months, all adults attending ED with minor injuries were first invited to complete an anonymous questionnaire then invited to test in alternating cycles offering HCV POCT or HCV+HIV POCT. Viral RNA was detected in finger-prick blood by GeneXpert. 814/859 (94.8%) questionnaires were returned and 324/814 (39.8%) tests were accepted, comprising 211 HCV tests and 113 HCV+HIV tests. Offering concomitant HIV screening reduced uptake after adjusting for age and previous HCV testing (odds ratio 0.51; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.38–0.68; p < 0.001). HCV prevalence was 1/324 (0.31%; 95% CI 0.05–1.73); no participant tested positive for HIV. 167/297 (56.2%) POCT participants lived in the most deprived neighbourhoods in England. HCV RNA testing using finger-prick blood was technically feasible. Uptake was moderate and the offer of concomitant HIV screening showed a detrimental impact on acceptability in this low prevalence population. The findings should be confirmed in a variety of other community settings

    Anthrax Lethal Toxin-Mediated Killing of Human and Murine Dendritic Cells Impairs the Adaptive Immune Response

    Many pathogens have acquired strategies to combat the immune response. Bacillus anthracis interferes with host defenses by releasing anthrax lethal toxin (LT), which inactivates mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways, rendering dendritic cells (DCs) and T lymphocytes nonresponsive to immune stimulation. However, these cell types are considered resistant to killing by LT. Here we show that LT kills primary human DCs in vitro, and murine DCs in vitro and in vivo. Kinetics of LT-mediated killing of murine DCs, as well as cell death pathways induced, were dependent upon genetic background: LT triggered rapid necrosis in BALB/c-derived DCs, and slow apoptosis in C57BL/6-derived DCs. This is consistent with rapid and slow killing of LT-injected BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice, respectively. We present evidence that anthrax LT impairs adaptive immunity by specifically targeting DCs. This may represent an immune-evasion strategy of the bacterium, and contribute to anthrax disease progression. We also established that genetic background determines whether apoptosis or necrosis is induced by LT. Finally, killing of C57BL/6-derived DCs by LT mirrors that of human DCs, suggesting that C57BL/6 DCs represent a better model system for human anthrax than the prototypical BALB/c macrophages

    High-efficiency Rosa26 knock-in vector construction for Cre-regulated overexpression and RNAi

    Patients with heart failure (HF) and anaemia have greater functional impairment, worse symptoms, increased rates of hospital admission, and a higher risk of death, compared with non-anaemic HF patients. Whether correcting anaemia can improve outcomes is unknown. The Reduction of Events with Darbepoetin alfa in Heart Failure trial (RED-HF; Clinical Trials.gov NCT 003 58215) was designed to evaluate the effect of the long-acting erythropoietin-stimulating agent darbepoetin alfa on mortality and morbidity (and quality of life) in patients with HF and anaemia. Approximately 2600 patients with New York Heart Association class II-IV, an ejection fraction = 9.0 g/dL will be enrolled. Patients are randomized 1:1 to double-blind subcutaneous administration of darbepoetin alfa or placebo. Investigators are also blinded to Hb measurements and darbepoetin alfa is dosed to achieve an Hb concentration of 13.0 g/dL (but not exceeding 14.5 g/dL) with sham adjustments of the dose of placebo. The primary endpoint is the time to death from any cause or first hospital admission for worsening HF, whichever occurs first. The study will complete when similar to 1150 subjects experience a primary endpoint
