The weight reduction of mod pp Siegel modular forms for GSp4GSp_4

In this paper we investigate the (classical) weights of mod pp Siegel modular forms of degree 2 toward studying Serre's conjecture for GSp4GSp_4. We first construct various theta operators on the space of such forms a la Katz and define the theta cycles for the specific theta operators. Secondly we study the partial Hasse invariants on each Ekedahl-Oort strata and their local behaviors. This enable us to obtain a kind of weight reduction theorem for mod pp Siegel modular forms of degree 2 without increasing level.Comment: This is an extended version of my previous article entitled as "The weight in Serre's conjecture for GSp4 GSp_4". Effective mass anomalies in strained Si thin films and crystals

Effective mass anomalies due to the geometrical effects are investigated in silicon nanostructures using first-principles calculations for the first time. In \{111\} and \{110\} biaxially strained Si, it is found that longitudinal effective mass is extraordinarily enhanced for both thin films and crystals. This mass enhancement is caused by the change of the band structure with double minima into that with a single minimum due to strain and confinement. At the transition point, it is analytically shown that the effective mass diverges. The dependences of the confinement thickness on the anomalies are qualitatively explained by an extension of the effective mass approximation.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

2A-orbifold construction and the baby-monster vertex operator superalgebra

In this article we prove that the full automorphism group of the baby-monster vertex operator superalgebra constructed by Hoehn is isomorphic to 2xB, where B is the baby-monster sporadic finite simple group and determine irreducible modules for the baby-monster vertex operator algebra. Our result has many corollaries. In particular, we can prove that the Z_2-orbifold construction with respect to a 2A-involution of the Monster applied to the moonshine vertex operator algebra yields the moonshine vertex operator algebra itself again.Comment: v2: Knowing Tuite's work on 2A-orbifold construction of the moonshine vertex operator algebra, we made a remark on it and revised reference

Degassifying and mixing apparatus for liquids

    Get PDF
An apparatus for degassing a liquid comprises a containment vessel a liquid pump and a header assembly (12) within the containment vessel in a volume above the reservoir of the liquid. The pump draws from this reservoir and outputs to the header assembly, the latter being constructed to return the liquid to the reservoir in the form of a number of stacked, vertically spaced, concentric, conical cascades via orifices. A vacuum source provides a partial vacuum in the containment vessel to enhance the degassing process

Social learning, neighborhood effects, and investment in human capital

"This paper shows that neighborhood factors matter in schooling investments: in the face of the availability of a new technology that altered schooling returns, agents learned of the benefits of new returns to schooling from neighbors and adjusted schooling investments over time. Using household data available from the onset of the Green Revolution in India—where in some regions the diffusion of high-yielding varieties (HYVs) affected returns to schooling — the author shows that the schooling distribution of the parents' generation in a neighborhood is important to social learning and household decisions regarding child schooling investments. The study attempts to empirically identify the process of social learning and neighborhood effects on child schooling investments in a Bayesian learning model."
