Design of Residential Hydrogen Fueling System in UB Bodine Hall
Pollution and emission from the burning fossil fuel already became a serious environmental issue. To solve this problem, more and more green energy or renewable energy has been used into and impact onto modern society. For instance, solar energy, hydrogen, and wind turbine gradually play an important role in manufactory industry. Using hydrogen fueling system for the residential is good for environments, because the students whose live in dormitory have their own cars. If those cars are hydrogen car, they can use the fueling system to supply the hydrogen to the cars. They do not have to go the hydrogen gas station to gas the hydrogen. And using hydrogen is more eco friendly than using the burning fossil. This design is to produce hydrogen for the hydrogen cars belonged to the residents of Bodine Hall, a dormitory at the UB, through a solar energy powered system. In this design, a Proton-Exchange-Membrane (PEM) eletrolyzer is used as a hydrogen generator, solar panels are used to convert solar energy to electricity for electrolyzer, and a hydrogen compressor system is used to compress hydrogen and store it
Association between monocyte lymphocyte ratio and abdominal aortic calcification in US adults: A cross-sectional study
Background
This study aimed to evaluate the association between Monocyte Lymphocyte Ratio (MLR) and Abdominal Aortic Calcification (AAC) in adults over 40 years of age in the United States.
Methods
Data were collected from the 2013–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). AAC was quantified by the Kauppila score system based on dual-energy X-Ray absorptiometry. Severe AAC was defined as a total AAC score > 6. The lymphocyte count and monocyte count can be directly obtained from laboratory data files. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the association between MLR and the AAC score and severe AAC.
Results
A total of 3,045 participants were included in the present study. After adjusting for multiple covariates, MLR was positively associated with higher AAC score (β = 0.21, 95% CI 0.07, 0.34, p = 0.0032) and the odds of severe AAC increased by 14% per 0.1 unit increase in the MLR (OR = 1.14, 95% CI 1.00, 1.31, p = 0.0541). The Odds Ratio (OR) (95% CI) of severe AAC for participants in MLR tertile 3 was 1.88 (1.02, 3.47) compared with those in tertile 1 (p for trend = 0.0341). Subgroup analyses showed that a stronger association was detected in the elderly compared with non-elderly (p for interaction = 0.0346) and diabetes compared with non-diabetes (borderline significant p for interaction = 0.0578).
Conclusion
In adults in the United States, MLR was associated with higher AAC scores and a higher probability of severe AAC. MLR may become a promising tool to predict the risk of AAC
Msk is required for nuclear import of TGF-{beta}/BMP-activated Smads
Nuclear translocation of Smad proteins is a critical step in signal transduction of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). Using nuclear accumulation of the Drosophila Smad Mothers against Decapentaplegic (Mad) as the readout, we carried out a whole-genome RNAi screening in Drosophila cells. The screen identified moleskin (msk) as important for the nuclear import of phosphorylated Mad. Genetic evidence in the developing eye imaginal discs also demonstrates the critical functions of msk in regulating phospho-Mad. Moreover, knockdown of importin 7 and 8 (Imp7 and 8), the mammalian orthologues of Msk, markedly impaired nuclear accumulation of Smad1 in response to BMP2 and of Smad2/3 in response to TGF-beta. Biochemical studies further suggest that Smads are novel nuclear import substrates of Imp7 and 8. We have thus identified new evolutionarily conserved proteins that are important in the signal transduction of TGF-beta and BMP into the nucleus

Effect of a Jet Control Device on the Process of Missile and Internal Weapons Bay Separation
To ensure that the missile is safely separated from the internal weapons bay, the jet is used to control the process of missile separation, which is mounted on the front edge of the bay. The length-to-depth ratio of the bay was L/D=8, the diameter of the missile was d1 =0.178 m, the diameter of the jet was d2 =0.05 m . The FLUENT software was combined with our group-developed code under the platform of a user-defined function (UDF) to solve the flow field and the six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) of missile. The detached eddy simulation method and dynamic mesh technology were used in the numerical calculations. The boundary condition of missile, bay, and aircraft was no-slip wall condition. The boundary condition of the jet was the pressure-inlet. The pressure far-field boundary was selected as other boundaries. The constraint of the ejection device on the missile was considered. It was found that the jet control device thickens the shear layer, so the shear layer with more gradual velocity gradients, which is beneficial to the separation of missile. The distance between the internal weapons bay and the missile in the positive z-direction with the jet is 1.74 times that without the jet at t=0.5 s. In the case of the jet control device, the pitching angle of the missile ranged from 0.93° to -3.94° , the angular motion range of the missile with the jet is smaller than that without. The jet can make the characteristics of the flow field friendly, and enable the missile to separate from the bay quickly, stably, and safely
Multiphysics vibration FE model of piezoelectric macro fibre composite on carbon fibre composite structures
This paper presents a finite element (FE) model developed using commercial FE software COMSOL to simulate the multiphysical process of pieozoelectric vibration energy harvesting (PVEH), involving the dynamic mechanical and electrical behaviours of piezoelectric macro fibre composite (MFC) on carbon fibre composite structures. The integration of MFC enables energy harvesting, sensing and actuation capabilities, with applications found in aerospace, automotive and renewable energy. There is an existing gap in the literature on modelling the dynamic response of PVEH in relation to real-world vibration data. Most simulations were either semi-analytical MATLAB models that are geometry unspecific, or basic FE simulations limited to sinusoidal analysis. However, the use of representative environment vibration data is crucial to predict practical behaviour for industrial development. Piezoelectric device physics involving solid mechanics and electrostatics were combined with electrical circuit defined in this FE model. The structure was dynamically excited by interpolated vibration data files, while orthotropic material properties for MFC and carbon fibre composite were individually defined for accuracy. The simulation results were validated by experiments with <10﹪ deviation, providing confidence for the proposed multiphysical FE model to design and optimise PVEH smart composite structures
Surface Adjustment Strategy for a Large Radio Telescope with Adjustable Dual Reflectors
With the development of large-aperture and high-frequency radio telescopes, a surface adjustment procedure for the compensation of surface deformations has become of great importance. In this study, an innovative surface adjustment strategy is proposed to achieve an automated adjustment for the large radio telescope with adjustable dual reflectors. In the proposed strategy, a high-precision and long-distance measurement instrument is adopted and installed on the back of the sub-reflector to measure the distances and elevation angles of the target points on the main reflector. Here, two surface adjustment purposes are discussed. The first purpose is to ensure that the main reflector and sub-reflector are always positioned at their ideal locations during operation. The second purpose is to adjust the main reflector to the location of the best fitting reflector, and the sub-reflector to the focus of the best fitting reflector. Next, the calculation procedures for the adjustments of the main reflector and the sub-reflector are discussed in detail, and corresponding simulations are carried out to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed strategy is effective. This study can provide helpful guidance for the design of automated surface adjustments for large telescopes
