    Restructuring A Sales Force for the Modern Marketplace

    The purpose of this thesis is to examine the function of the sales force and how modern times require organizations to rethink how to best use the sales force. Areas such as the use of technology, territory alignment, and training of sales people are discussed as they relate to the marketplace. The culture of sales organizations is reviewed to assess whether they are structured to manage major changes that will assist in yielding benefits and reaching strategic objectives. In addition, I describe the degree to which organizations require warning signs before a change is made and explore whether they should make a change before warning signs are seen. I conclude with a commentary on whether it is time for a change even if the sales organization is operating well

    Maneuver Planning for Demonstration of a Low-Thrust Electric Propulsion System

    As the testing and implementation of CubeSat technologies on-orbit becomes more prolific, the need for high-efficiency, low-mass propulsion systems continues to grow. Ionic propulsion systems have emerged as a potential technology to fill the niche of CubeSat propulsion. BeaverCube, a student-built 3U CubeSat from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will host an ionic propulsion system demonstration in low Earth orbit. Slated to launch no earlier than October 2020, BeaverCube seeks to demonstrate the Accion Systems Inc. Tiled Ionic Liquid Electrospray propulsion system. This system utilizes an ionic liquidas propellant, giving BeaverCube the ability to make high-efficiency, low-thrust maneuvers. A successful system demonstration will be able to detect a translational maneuver using the NovAtel OEM-719 Global Positioning System receiver onboard BeaverCube. Detectability requires the altitude change of a maneuver to be at least 9 meters, which is 3 standard deviations above the expected GPS altitude error. The goal of this work is to determine the duration of translational maneuver that will result in the highest probability of detection while producing the smallest error in thrust calculation. From simulations performed in Systems Tool Kit, a 3.5 hour maneuver was determined to be optimal, resulting in an altitude change of 280.6 meters

However, lean operations depend on level scheduling and the growing need to accommodate variety and demand uncertainty has resulted in the emergence of the concept of agility. This paper explores the role of inventory and capacity in accommodating such variation and identifies how TRIZ separation principles and TOC tools may be combined in the integrated development of responsive and efficient supply chains. A detailed apparel industry case study is used to illustrate the application of these concepts and tools

    The Impact of Sleep Quality Combined with Physical Activity on Autonomic Function (24-hour HRV) in College Students

    Long-term poor sleep quality is associated with health outcomes that can lead to autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Both cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity (PA) are associated with improvements in autonomic function and heart rate variability (HRV). Markers of fitness and sleep were explored to determine the degree of contribution to autonomic dysfunction. A total of 15 subjects, (age = 20.6±0.5; BMI = 23.9±1.0) completed 7 days of physical activity and sleep assessment via accelerometry. Participants then completed a graded exercise test to determine cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max), followed by a 24-H HRV measurement. HRV through LF:HF ratio was negatively associated with moderate physical activity (MPA) (4.6% ± 0.7), percent in MPA, total moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and percentage spent in MVPA (2.6 ± 0.4 vs. 4.1 ± 1.7, p = 0.04). Students that obtained less than 7 hours of sleep tended to participate in lighter intensities of physical activity (333.6 ± 71.1 vs. 261.5 ± 68.3). Individuals that obtained more than 7 hours of sleep spent more time in vigorous exercise (3.2 ± 3.1 vs. 6.7 ± 4.5). Having a lower HRV status is associated with less time participating in MVPA. This demonstrates the importance of MVPA written for the general population and should be applied to college students, especially those that may lack proper sleep

    North American Hard Yellow Liver Disease: An Old Problem Readdressed

    Hard yellow liver disease or fatty cirrhosis periodically affects cattle, sheep, goats, pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) and whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus texanus) within several Texas counties in the United States. Clinically it presents as chronic liver disease with progressive hepatic necrosis and fibrosis, icterus and liver failure. The damaged livers are yellow and many have multiple firm, often gritty foci that are scattered throughout all lobes. Early investigations included feeding studies using potential toxic plants, climate and forage studies, infectious disease surveys and various mycotoxin studies and analyses. None have definitively reproduced the disease or identified the inciting cause. However, the problem continues and recent outbreaks have allowed the collection of additional frozen tissues, and numerous paraffin tissue blocks and slides for additional studies. The objectives for this work are to evaluate and compare the microscopic changes, special histochemical studies, microbial and fungal surveys and chemical assays for dehyro-pyrrolizidine alkaloid (DHPA) metabolites of these additional cases with historical reports. These bovine livers had a spectrum of lesions including lipid degeneration and necrosis, eosinophilic granulomatous hepatitis, focal follicular lymphoid proliferation and chronic fibrosing hepatitis with dystrophic mineralization. No pyrrolizidine alkaloid metabolites were detected in any of the livers and select special stains did not reveal any fungal, bacterial or parasitic etiologies. The lack of findings and mixed histologic presentation suggest that this syndrome is a collection of chronic diseases probably of various etiologies. Earlier animal surveillance work is needed in endemic areas to better understand the etiology and pathogenesis of this syndrome

    The influence of a CYP1A2 polymorphism on the ergogenic effects of caffeine

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although caffeine supplementation improves performance, the ergogenic effect is variable. The cause(s) of this variability are unknown. A (C/A) single nucleotide polymorphism at intron 1 of the cytochrome P450 (CYP1A2) gene influences caffeine metabolism and clinical outcomes from caffeine ingestion. The purpose of this study was to determine if this polymorphism influences the ergogenic effect of caffeine supplementation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Thirty-five trained male cyclists (age = 25.0 ± 7.3 yrs, height = 178.2 ± 8.8 cm, weight = 74.3 ± 8.8 kg, VO<sub>2</sub>max = 59.35 ± 9.72 ml·kg<sup>-1</sup>·min<sup>-1</sup>) participated in two computer-simulated 40-kilometer time trials on a cycle ergometer. Each test was performed one hour following ingestion of 6 mg·kg<sup>-1 </sup>of anhydrous caffeine or a placebo administered in double-blind fashion. DNA was obtained from whole blood samples and genotyped using restriction fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction. Participants were classified as AA homozygotes (N = 16) or C allele carriers (N = 19). The effects of treatment (caffeine, placebo) and the treatment × genotype interaction were assessed using Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Caffeine supplementation reduced 40 kilometer time by a greater (<it>p </it>< 0.05) magnitude in AA homozygotes (4.9%; caffeine = 72.4 ± 4.2 min, placebo = 76.1 ± 5.8 min) as compared to C allele carriers (1.8%; caffeine = 70.9 ± 4.3 min, placebo = 72.2 ± 4.2 min).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Results suggest that individuals homozygous for the A allele of this polymorphism may have a larger ergogenic effect following caffeine ingestion.</p

    A high resolution RH map of the bovine major histocompatibility complex

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The cattle MHC is termed the bovine leukocyte antigen (BoLA) and, along with the MHCs of other ruminants, is unique in its genomic organization. Consequently, correct and reliable gene maps and sequence information are critical to the study of the BoLA region. The bovine genome sequencing project has produced two assemblies (Btau_3.1 and 4.0) that differ substantially from each other and from conventional gene maps in the BoLA region. To independently compare the accuracies of the different sequence assemblies, we have generated a high resolution map of BoLA using a 12,000<sub>rad </sub>radiation hybrid panel. Seventy-seven unique sequence tagged site (STS) markers chosen at approximately 50 kb intervals from the Btau 2.0 assembly and spanning the IIa-III-I and IIb regions of the bovine MHC were mapped on a 12,000<sub>rad </sub>bovine radiation hybrid (RH) panel to evaluate the different assemblies of the bovine genome sequence.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Analysis of the data generated a high resolution RH map of BoLA that was significantly different from the Btau_3.1 assembly of the bovine genome but in good agreement with the Btau_4.0 assembly. Of the few discordancies between the RH map and Btau_4.0, most could be attributed to closely spaced markers that could not be precisely ordered in the RH panel. One probable incorrectly-assembled sequence and three missing sequences were noted in the Btau_4.0 assembly. The RH map of BoLA is also highly concordant with the sequence-based map of HLA (NCBI build 36) when reordered to account for the ancestral inversion in the ruminant MHC.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results strongly suggest that studies using Btau_3.1 for analyses of the BoLA region should be reevaluated in light of the Btau_4.0 assembly and indicate that additional research is needed to produce a complete assembly of the BoLA genomic sequences.</p

    A Molecular Precursor to Phosphaethyne and Its Application in Synthesis of the Aromatic 1,2,3,4-Phosphatriazolate Anion

    Dibenzo-7-phosphanorbornadiene Ph[subscript 3]PC(H)PA (1, A = C[subscript 14]H[subscript 10], anthracene) is reported here as a molecular precursor to phosphaethyne (HC≡P), produced together with anthracene and triphenylphosphine. HCP generated by thermolysis of 1 has been observed by molecular beam mass spectrometry, laser-induced fluorescence, microwave spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In toluene, fragmentation of 1 has been found to proceed with activation parameters of ΔH[superscript ⧧] = 25.5 kcal/mol and ΔS[superscript ⧧] = −2.43 eu and is accompanied by formation of an orange insoluble precipitate. Results from computational studies of the mechanism of HCP generation are in good agreement with experimental data. This high-temperature method of HCP generation has pointed to new reaction chemistry with azide anion to produce the 1,2,3,4-phosphatriazolate anion, HCPN3–, for which structural data have been obtained in a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. Negative-ion photoelectron spectroscopy has shown the adiabatic detachment energy for this anion to be 3.555(10) eV. The aromaticity of HCPN[subscript 3]– has been assessed using nucleus-independent chemical shift, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and natural bond orbital methods.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (NSF grant CHE-1362118)United States.     Understanding the UK hospital supply chain in an era of patient choice

Subsequently, the hospital system should become far more competitive with supply chains having to react to these changes as patient demand becomes less predictable. Using a qualitative case study methodology, hospital managers are interviewed on a range of issues. Views on the development of the hospital supply chain in different phases are derived, and are used to develop a map of the current hospital chain. The findings show hospital managers anticipating some significant changes to the hospital supply chain and its workings as Patient Choice expands. The research also maps the various aspects of the hospital supply chain as it moves through different operational phases and highlights underlying challenges and complexities. The hospital supply chain, as discussed and mapped in this research, is original work given there are no examples in the literature that provide holistic representations of hospital activity. At the end, specific recommendations are provided that will be of interest to service to managers, researchers, and policymakers
