Forgotten nineteenth-century words and expressions of religious vocabulary (on the example of the documents of the Sisters of Divine Providence)
Leksemy cnota i pokora nabrały z kolei nieco negatywnego zabarwienia, zwłaszcza w rzeczywistości laickiej. The article presents words and expressions from the religious vocabulary which functioned in the nineteenth-century Polish language, and which do not exist in contemporary texts about religion. The source of the study is the nineteenth-century documents of the Sisters of Divine Providence that constitute the legal norms of that religious community: Zbiór Ustaw Zgromadzenia Panien Opatrzności (Collection of Regulations of the Assembly of Maidens of Providence) from 1857 and Ustawy Zgromadzenia Sióstr Opatrzności (Laws of the Sisters of Providence) from 1882. Etymological -structural and semantic analysis of the chosen linguistic units, attested by appropriate quotations in which these words appear, shows that almost all the forgotten words and expressions mentioned in the article taken from the documents of the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence are lexical archaisms. The word pokutnica (penitent) is an archaism. Most often repeated in the analysed material words are the nouns admonitorka and pokutnica, then próbantka and idioms dawać pokuty, cnota gruntowna, the noun szafarka and idiom postępek duchowny. The words cnota (virtue) and pokora (humility) gained a slightly negative connotation, especially in secular reality
The subordinated of tomorrow : Croatian dystopian prose in the postcolonial approach
In the Croatian literature, which since the collapse of Yugoslavia has been dominated mainly by neo-realistic trends, over the past few years the rapid growth of popularity of dystopia - a genre which until now almost did not occur - can be observed. The means used in the work of fiction allow for representation of the present-day negative trends at the system level, without the need to present individual epiphenomena. Methodological tools, used for the analysis of the literature presented in this article, are provided by the postcolonial reflection, and the key operational tools used in the proposed interpretation of the Croatian dystopian fiction are categories of exclusion, subordination and authority, derived directly from the philosophy of Michel Foucault and the works of his continuator - Giorgio Agamben, as well as the issues connected to the relations and deep divisions between the center and the peripheries, the epistemic violence and the post-colonial discourse
Thirty years of discourse completion test in contrastive pragmatics research
Discourse Completion Test (DCT) became a very popular research instrument after
the publication of the infl uential Blum-Kulka & Olshtain’s (1984) paper titled
“Requests and apologies: a cross-cultural study of speech act realization patterns
(CCSARP)”. Hundreds and thousands of papers employing the data collection instrument,
originally developed by Blum-Kulka in 1982, have been published since
then, and the controlled elicitation procedure has left a very important mark on the
way in which speech acts have been studied cross-culturally. DCT has its strong
supporters as well as pronounced enemies, but its contribution to the development
of the fi eld cannot be questioned. The paper presents an overview of the advantages
and disadvantages of the data collection tool, as well as a synthesis of the most important
fi ndings which it has managed to yield so far. Major directions of research
are summarized and possible future developments outlined

What you'll never manage to read : the small print component of televised commercials for erection stimulants
The law is not effective in forcing the advertisers to communicate complete and
reliable information about advertised products: the mere inclusion of written disclosures
does not guarantee their successful perception, let alone comprehension.
TV commercials are especially troublesome in this respect, because not only are the
disclaimers presented in microscopic font size, but their display time challenges the
perceptive abilities of even the most effi cient readers, not to mention the distracting
effect of the simultaneously presented visual images and voice-overs. Yet, their
effective comprehension could very often signifi cantly modify the overall message
and in this way lead to altered (often in a way unfavourable for the advertiser)
persuasive effect. The study presents the ways in which the small print components
interact with the information presented by means of the more conspicuous linguistic
and pictorial items in a collection of 20 Polish TV commercials for erection stimulants.
In particular, attention is given to the potential changes in the communicated
message in the conditions of full comprehension and intake of the small print items
Optimal innovation in press advertisements
The discourse of advertising offers an environment conducive to the exploitation of
novelty in language. Novelty can be conceptualised as an opposite of salience (Giora,
2003), being also a graded feature. Giora claims that there exists a specifi c level of
novelty, which evokes pleasurable experience in recipients. She proposes Optimal
Innovation Hypothesis, which may be implied in the investigation of various types of
discourse marked with high originality. The paper reports on two studies. The initial
one, described in Wojtaszek (2011), focused on the appreciation of three alternative
versions of Polish and British advertising slogans, while the subsequent one is the
attempt to fi nd a relationship between the previous fi ndings and the degree of legibility
of the investigated texts. In the appreciation task the plain formulations received
the lowest scores, followed by the highly innovative slogans, with the optimally
innovative formulations ranking highest. In the task where evaluation of clarity was
performed, the plain formulations turned out to be the easiest, the optimally innovative
slogans were a bit more diffi cult, and the highly innovative ones the least conspicuous.
A number of interesting dependencies were also found, suggesting further
developments for the futur
Deciphering radio commercials - a pragmatic perspective
Niniejsza praca stanowi próbę opisu strategii perswazyjnych wykorzystywanych
występujących pomiędzy reklamami angielskimi i polskimi.
Rozdział I poświęcono prezentacji literatury, zawierającej pozycje podobne zarówno
w następnych rozdziałach: G. Leecha English in Advertising (1966), M. Geisa The
Language of Television Advertising (1982), K. Tanaki Advertising Language (1994),
G. Myersa Words in Ads (1994), G. Cooka The Discourse of Advertising, a z rodzimych
opracowań — książka J. Bralczyka Język na sprzedaż (1996).
W rozdziale II zamieszczono krótką historię reklamy. To spojrzenie w przeszłość
Dwa pierwsze rozdziały stanowią wprowadzenie do zasadniczej części rozprawy,
którą rozpoczyna rozdział III. Zawiera on próbę zdefiniowania reklamy jako osobnego
gatunku oraz wyodrębnienia jej charakterystycznych cech, wyróżniając język reklamy
spośród innych typów wypowiedzi, a także ustalenia dotyczące materiału i metod
badawczych.
Rozdział IV jest poświęcony wykorzystaniu wyrażeń indeksykalnych w reklamie.
Najwięcej można tu powiedzieć o deiksie osobowej, w pewien charakterystyczny sposób
kodującej role nadawcy i odbiorcy komunikatu reklamowego.
postaw i poglądów.
Znaczeniu implikatury i ukrytych znaczeń w perswazyjnym oddziaływaniu reklamy
poświęcono szósty, najdłuższy rozdział rozprawy. Analiza oparta jest na dwóch,
najbardziej chyba znanych teoriach próbujących wyjaśnić mechanizmy powstawania
implikatury: „regule kooperacji” Grice’a (1975) oraz związanych z nią maksymach
konwersacyjnych oraz teoriach relewancji Sperbera i Wilsona (1986). Uciekanie się
nadawców reklamy do ukrywania pewnych komunikatów i sugestii w implikaturze ma
wiele przyczyn.
a w szczególności z aluzyjnym traktowaniem seksu, potrzebą wytworzenia iluzyjnej
zawierający transkrypt wszystkich analizowanych w niej reklam
Positive attitude change to school - Narrative inquiry into adolescent students' lived experiences
This thesis reports on a qualitative research study that investigated adolescent students‟ experiences of positive attitude change to school. The literature review situates the research of students‟ attitude changes to school within the affective component of the multidimensional construct of student engagement and identifies this field and the phenomenon of positive attitude change to school as underresearched and under-theorised. Narrative inquiry methodology was applied in order to provide a detailed description of students‟ lived experiences and generate knowledge to fill the existing gap of how such an experience manifests itself. Eight students, who self-reported to have experienced positive attitude change to school, shared stories through in-depth semi-structured interviews of how the attitude change came about, who or what influenced it, and what meaning they attached to it in relation to its impact on their engagement and wellbeing. Students‟ attitudes to school are predominantly examined through quantitative research, whereas this study provided a unique and nuanced insight into attitude change based on the qualitative paradigm and a social constructionist view of the experience from the students‟ vantage point. Students‟ narrative accounts are compared and contrasted with each other to identify five resonant threads associated with the experience of positive attitude change to school. Data analysis suggests that positive attitude change to school has a significant impact on student engagement in learning and student wellbeing through its embodiment of perceived positive emotions associated with being at school. It consequently illustrates the relevance of broadening the understanding of such an experience to address the critical issue of disengagement in adolescent students. Key findings indicate that students develop a negative attitude to school when personal problems remain unresolved or have been insufficiently addressed within the school environment; no “helping hand” was there to assist these ambitious students who were struggling to engage in learning due to their experience of negative emotions at school. This research study has revealed that a negative attitude to school does not necessarily equate to a negative attitude to learning. Students‟ perception of the available support, both from the teachers and the services offered at school, is a critical factor in the transformation of their attitudes to school. Further, the students who participated in this study did not themselves feel that they were equipped with the required knowledge and skills to manage their personal problems effectively in order to maintain their engagement in learning. Only after having “hit rock bottom” and having sought help from outside the school environment were the students able to apply a different perspective to their circumstances that was associated with positive attitude change to school. From this research study it can be concluded that a student‟s positive attitude to school is a requirement for successful social and academic outcomes, and it is an educational goal in itself regarding the notion of developing lifelong learners. Personal problems and their impact on student engagement and wellbeing need to be acknowledged and catered for within the school environment. School support services must proactively extend a helping hand to students who have a negative attitude to school. Further, students need to develop selfefficacy regarding their personal wellbeing so that they become confident to act autonomously in solving their situations at school that are characterised by the difficult negative emotions that they are experiencing. Students‟ attitudes to school and the complexity of the multidimensional construct of student engagement need to be considered in the development of initiatives to address adolescent student disengagement and in the development of student wellbeing frameworks.Doctor of Philosoph
