    Animal welfare impact following the 4 September 2010 Canterbury (Darfield) earthquake

    At 4.35am on Saturday 4 September 2010, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near the township of Darfield in Canterbury leading to widespread damage in Christchurch and the wider central Canterbury region. Though it was reported no lives were lost, that was not entirely correct. Over 3,000 animals perished as a result of the earthquake and 99% of these deaths would have been avoidable if appropriate mitigation measures had been in place. Deaths were predominantly due to zoological vulnerability of birds in captive production farms. Other problems included lack of provision of animal welfare at evacuation centres, issues associated with multiple lost and found pet services, evacuation failure due to pet separation and stress impact on dairy herds and associated milk production. The Canterbury Earthquake has highlighted concerns over a lack of animal emergency welfare planning and capacity in New Zealand, an issue that is being progressed by the National Animal Welfare Emergency Management Group. As animal emergency management becomes better understood by emergency management and veterinary professionals, it is more likely that both sectors will have greater demands placed upon them by national guidelines and community expectations to ensure provisions are made to afford protection of animals in times of disaster. A subsequent and more devastating earthquake struck the region on Monday 22 February 2011; this article however is primarily focused on the events pertaining to the September 4 event

    Parameters of the attenuated schistosome vaccine evaluated in the olive baboon

    Five exposures of baboons to the attenuated schistosome vaccine gave greater protection than three exposures, but this attenuation was not sustained when challenge was delayed. Within the scope of the data collected, fecal egg counts and circulating antigen levels did not accurately predict the observed worm burdens. Levels of immunoglobulin G at challenge correlated best with protection, but there was little evidence of a recall response

    Coral diversity and the severity of disease outbreaks: a cross-regional comparison of Acropora White Syndrome in a species-rich region (American Samoa) with a species-poor region (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands)

    The dynamics of the coral disease, Acropora white syndrome (AWS), was directly compared on reefs in the species-poor region of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) and the species-rich region of American Samoa (AS) with results suggesting that biodiversity, which can affect the abundance of susceptible hosts, is important in influencing the impacts of coral disease outbreaks. The diversity-disease hypothesis predicts that decreased host species diversity should result in increased disease severity of specialist pathogens. We found that AWS was more prevalent and had a higher incidence within the NWHI as compared to AS. Individual Acropora colonies affected by AWS showed high mortality in both regions, but case fatality rate and disease severity was higher in the NWHI. The site within the NWHI had a monospecific stand of A. cytherea; a species that is highly susceptible to AWS. Once AWS entered the site, it spread easily amongst the abundant susceptible hosts. The site within AS contained numerous Acropora species, which differed in their apparent susceptibility to infection and disease severity, which in turn reduced disease spread. Manipulative studies showed AWS was transmissible through direct contact in three Acropora species. These results will help managers predict and respond to disease outbreaks

    Interdependence and dynamics of essential services in an extensive risk context: a case study in Montserrat, West Indies

    The essential services that support urban living are complex and interdependent, and their disruption in disasters directly affects society. Yet there are few empirical studies to inform our understanding of the vulnerabilities and resilience of complex infrastructure systems in disasters. This research takes a systems thinking approach to explore the dynamic behaviour of a network of essential services, in the presence and absence of volcanic ashfall hazards in Montserrat, West Indies. Adopting a case study methodology and qualitative methods to gather empirical data, we centre the study on the healthcare system and its interconnected network of essential services. We identify different types of relationship between sectors and develop a new interdependence classification system for analysis. Relationships are further categorised by hazard conditions, for use in extensive risk contexts. During heightened volcanic activity, relationships between systems transform in both number and type: connections increase across the network by 41%, and adapt to increase cooperation and information sharing. Interconnections add capacities to the network, increasing the resilience of prioritised sectors. This in-depth and context-specific approach provides a new methodology for studying the dynamics of infrastructure interdependence in an extensive risk context, and can be adapted for use in other hazard contexts

    Evacuation planning in the Auckland Volcanic Field, New Zealand: a spatio-temporal approach for emergency management and transportation network decisions

    Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand (pop. 1.5 million) and is situated atop an active monogenetic volcanic field. When volcanic activity next occurs, the most effective means of protecting the people who reside and work in the region will be to evacuate the danger zone prior to the eruption. This study investigates the evacuation demand throughout the Auckland Volcanic Field and the capacity of the transportation network to fulfil such a demand. Diurnal movements of the population are assessed and, due to the seemingly random pattern of eruptions in the past, a non-specific approach is adopted to determine spatial vulnerabilities at a micro-scale (neighbourhoods). We achieve this through the calculation of population-, household- and car-to-exit capacity ratios. Following an analysis of transportation hub functionality and the susceptibility of motorway bridges to a new eruption, modelling using dynamic route and traffic assignment was undertaken to determine various evacuation attributes at a macro-scale and forecast total network clearance times. Evacuation demand was found to be highly correlated to diurnal population movements and neighbourhood boundary types, a trend that was also evident in the evacuation capacity ratio results. Elevated population to evacuation capacity ratios occur during the day in and around the central city, and at night in many of the outlying suburbs. Low-mobility populations generally have better than average access to public transportation. Macro-scale vulnerability was far more contingent upon the destination of evacuees, with favourable results for evacuation within the region as opposed to outside the region. Clearance times for intra-regional evacuation ranged from one to nine hours, whereas those for inter-regional evacuation were found to be so high, that the results were unrealistic. Therefore, we conclude that, from a mobility standpoint, there is considerable merit to intra-regional evacuation

    Atrial fibrillation after gastrointestinal surgery: incidence and associated risk factors

    BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common dysrhythmia that can occur after major physiological stress including surgery (postoperative AF). There are few data on postoperative AF after abdominal surgery. We set out to define the incidence of de novo postoperative AF after abdominal surgery and associated risk factors. METHODS: The Patient History Integrated Data store administrative database was interrogated for patients aged ≥65 y undergoing abdominal surgery from April 2012 to April 2014. Patients with pre-existing AF were excluded. The primary outcome was diagnosis of AF. RESULTS: Two thousand nine hundred and sixty-seven cases were included of whom 187 developed postoperative AF within 90 d (6.3%). The rate of postoperative AF varied by operation and was highest in small bowel resection (17.2%) and lowest in biliary surgery (4.8%). Median time to detection of postoperative AF was 32 d. Patients who developed postoperative AF were significantly older than those who did not develop AF (median age 75.3 y versus 72.4 y, P < 0.01). Logistic regression modeling found increasing age (odds ratio [OR] 1.03 [confidence interval {CI} 1.01-1.06], hypertension OR 1.73 [CI 1.19-2.51]), congestive cardiac failure (OR 3.04 [CI 1.88-4.92], and vascular disease OR 2.29 [CI 1.39-3.37]) were predictive of the development of postoperative AF within 30 d. The area under the curve for this model was 0.733. CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative AF affects a significant number of patients after abdominal surgery. Demographics such as history of cardiovascular disease might aid prediction of postoperative AF. Postoperative AF is mostly identified after discharge, suggesting the need for postoperative screening

    Light-cone QCD Sum Rules for the Λ\Lambda Baryon Electromagnetic Form Factors and its magnetic moment

    We present the light-cone QCD sum rules up to twist 6 for the electromagnetic form factors of the Λ\Lambda baryon. To estimate the magnetic moment of the baryon, the magnetic form factor is fitted by the dipole formula. The numerical value of our estimation is μΛ=(0.64±0.04)μN\mu_\Lambda=-(0.64\pm0.04)\mu_N, which is in accordance with the experimental data and the existing theoretical results. We find that it is twist 4 but not the leading twist distribution amplitudes that dominate the results.Comment: 13 page, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Euro. Phys. J.

    UK-based, multisite, prospective cohort study of small bowel obstruction in acute surgical services: National Audit of Small Bowel Obstruction (NASBO) protocol

    Introduction Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common indication for emergency laparotomy in the UK, which is associated with a 90-day mortality rate of 13%. There are currently no UK clinical guidelines for the management of this condition. The aim of this multicentre prospective cohort study is to describe the burden, variation in management and associated outcomes of SBO in the UK adult population. Methods and analysis UK hospitals providing emergency general surgery are eligible to participate. This study has three components: (1) a clinical preference questionnaire to be completed by consultants providing emergency general surgical care to assesses preferences in diagnostics and therapeutic approaches, including laparoscopy and nutritional interventions; (2) site resource profile questionnaire to indicate ease of access to diagnostic services, operating theatres, nutritional support teams and postoperative support including intensive care; (3) prospective cohort study of all cases of SBO admitted during an 8-week period at participating trusts. Data on diagnostics, operative and nutritional interventions, and in-hospital mortality and morbidity will be captured, followed by data validation. Ethics and dissemination This will be conducted as a national audit of practice in conjunction with trainee research collaboratives, with support from patient representatives, surgeons, anaesthetists, gastroenterologists and a clinical trials unit. Site-specific reports will be provided to each participant site as well as an overall report to be disseminated through specialist societies. Results will be published in a formal project report endorsed by stakeholders, and in peer-reviewed scientific reports. Key findings will be debated at a focused national meeting with a view to quality improvement initiatives

    Value of Grinding Grains and Roughages for Livestock

    This experiment was conducted in cooperation with the departments of Agricultural Engineering, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Husbandry of South Dakota State College. The department of Agricultural Engineering ground the grains and roughages with a burr grinder. For power a tractor was used, such as is found on any farm where grinding is practiced. The departments of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Husbandry fed these ground grains and roughages to livestock of the different kinds. There has been for some time, and there is today a demand for information along these lines because some farmers who have purchased tractors to assist with the farm work are eager to utilize this machinery to the best advantage during the idle period. Naturally, the question of grinding all the roughages and grains grown on the farm before feeding to all kinds of livestock is suggested. This experiment did not include all of the grains and roughages but only some of those that are more commonly grown in the state. We know there are feeds that would be more palatable for some livestock if ground than unground. Palatability is an important factor in all feeding operations. The practice of mixing ground grains and roughages at the time of grinding has been advocated by some; because of this we fed the ground feeds mixed, as well as in separate troughs, to learn whether there was any great advantage in feeding in this manner. Therefore, this bulletin not only includes the advantages and disadvantages of feeding ground grains and ground roughages, as such, in separate troughs but the advantages and disadvantages of feeding the ground feeds mixed. There are more mixed feeds for sale at the present time than ever before. In some cases feeds are mixed while being ground, but in our mixing we aimed to mix the same quantity of each as animals were consuming when the ground feeds were fed in separate troughs. It required time to mix these feeds daily but in figuring the cost of producing 100 pounds of gain we have not included anything for this chore
