    Pathology of the kidney

Under normal conditions the function of the Kidneys ma: )e classed under two heads, first, a true secretary function, and second, a function which is nearly allied to simple filtration. The true secreting work of the kidney i s performed by the glandular epithelium which lines the convoluted portions cf the tubules;various organic substances - urea, uric acid, and a certain proportion of the solids cf the urine - are separated from the blood by the secreting cells of these tubules; while the filtration or diffusion of fluid appears to be performed by the tufts of capillaries within the Maipighian capsules; without a doubt the capillaries ;within the glomeruli are submitted to a high blood pressure, and ref are _.ce has often been made to the smallness of tyre efferent vessels as an indication of one possible cause cf the nigh pressure within the Maipighian tuft. This explanation however, scarcely seems conclusive; the efferent vessel is certainly smaller than the afferent but this possibly may be the work of the Malpighian tuft rather than its cause. Undoubtedly a small efferent vessel)if its walls were rigid would give rise to a high blood pressure within the Maipighian tuft/but it appears to be equally probable that the efferent vessel is small as the result of the filtration from the Malpighian capillaries. The efferent vessel has less fluid to carry than the afferent and therefore it is not necessary that it should. be so large. In all probability some salts pass through the Maipighian tuft together water, as for example the inorganic crystalline salts 'anion doubtless readily diffuse through the membranes

The static nonequilibrium characteristics of planar germanium probes in a slightly ionized hydrogen plasma for low injections

    Get PDF
The theory for a planar semiconductor probe in a slightly ionized gas with small dc current densities is developed for a germanium probe immersed in a hydrogen plasma. First, the equilibrium characteristics due to the probe in the plasma are developed from Poisson\u27s equation and current density equations. Then, the static nonequilibrium characteristics due to the probe are found by perturbing the equilibrium characteristics and substituting the perturbation terms into Poisson\u27s equation and current density equations. The total current, I, is found to vary linearly with the applied voltages, V, and the ratios I/V are essentially the same for both intrinsic and n-type germanium probes if the width of the probes is much smaller than the dimensions of the plasma --Abstract, page ii

Sierra Leone After the End of the Armed Conflict

Since March 1991, Sierra Leone has experienced continuous civil strife culminating in a protracted civil war, leading to widespread destructions of infrastructures and property, and the death of thousands of people, many more injured and over half of the population displaced. Three peace accords were signed in 1996, 1997 and 1999 in Abidjan, Conakry and Lame respectively. However, these agreements did not bring peace. In this paper, the author situates the reasons and the nature of the conflict, the events leading to both government and rebel leaders declaring in January 2002 the end to conflict. Finally, he looks at Sierra Leone following the formal declaration of an end to the war. Porém, nenhum deles trouxe a paz. Job Satisfaction: Are Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives Beneficial And Do Different Governance Structures Matter?

The non-financial benefits of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives remain an understudied controversy in the literature.  We draw on elements of stakeholder theory to investigate the effect of multiple CSR initiatives on job satisfaction for a widespread set of medium-sized Canadian companies.  We explore this relationship further by focusing on the moderating effects of governance control structures.  Data on these variables is captured through the lens of CFO/controller perceptions because of their intimate governance gatekeeping over firms’ control structure/systems.  In this respect, we assume that CFOs are among the instrumental drivers in advancing an organization’s unfolding social consciousness.  Research findings in this study reveal the criticality of examining this linkage within the context of the performance-based versus conformance-based dimensions of an organization’s corporate governance control structure – two governance dimensions championed by the International Federation of Accountants (2009).  Results for low/high levels of performance-based control structures manifest different interaction configurations of statistically significant CSR variables that heighten job satisfaction.  However, significant interaction effects under low/high levels featuring compliance-based control structures are not forthcoming, despite the presence of significant main effects in the CSR/job satisfaction relationship.  These findings offer firms a more comprehensive practical understanding of benefits associated with investments in particular CSR strategies while grooming specific control structures, as well as offering researchers new control variables to model in the CSR domain.&nbsp

Determinants of Ethical Climate in the Firm:The Role of Governance Systems and Environmental Uncertainty

    Get PDF
Corporate governance mechanisms essentially reside in the control structure/systems of most organizations and provide, theoretically at least, a conduit to support a better organizational ethical climate.  This linkage, however, has seldom been portrayed this way in the literature and, correspondingly, there are virtually no empirical studies to offer increased understanding, especially with respect to the professional accountant in practice.  Accordingly, this paper empirically assesses the governance mechanisms sanctioned by the International Federation of Accountants (2009) as determinants of an organization’s ethical climate based on evidence from a Canadian sample of CFOs/controllers.  The ethics/leadership literature relating to ethical climate provides the theoretical underpinnings while organizational contingency theory supports examining the moderating effects of perceived environmental uncertainty (PEU).   Increases in corporate governance control mechanisms are found to positively influence ethical climate.  A significant relationship persists under both low and high levels of PEU but, as expected, it is much stronger when the level of PEU is low – which raises concerns about how to embrace a stronger ethical climate when uncertainty is high.  This paper contributes to the governance and ethics literature by providing empirical evidence that normative directives on evaluating and improving governance in organizations from global accounting authorities, such as the IFAC, are effective in shaping firms’ ethical climates in practice
