    Co-infection with opportunistic pathogens promotes human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection in macrophages

    Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection is dependent on susceptible host cells that express both CD4 and chemokine co-receptors. The co-receptor CCR5 is associated with primary infection by macrophage-tropic virus isolates, whereas CXCR4 is commonly associated with T cell- and dual- tropic viruses. Once infected, lymphocytes and macrophages may replicate HIV- 1 or harbor latent virus, depending on environmental factors and cellular activation. Immune activation is often associated with viremia, which is consistent with enhanced infection and viral replication in activated cells harboring virus. In this regard, opportunistic infections activate the immune system with the detrimental sequelae of enhanced viral replication and viremia. Under these conditions, viral expansion extends beyond T cells to tissue macrophages, many of which are co-infected with opportunistic pathogens. The opportunistic infections promote macrophage susceptibility to HIV-1 through cytokine modulation and altered chemokine co-receptors, potential targets for intervention

    Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy for a Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor.

    Tumor-induced osteomalacia is a very rare paraneoplastic syndrome. It can be caused by phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT), a generally benign tumor that produces fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), which can cause a severe renal phosphate wasting syndrome. Upon complete surgical removal of the tumor, FGF-23 normalizes and the osteomalacia is cured. In cases in which surgery is not feasible, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is the treatment of choice. We describe a case with a PMT situated in the sacrum, in close proximity to the sacral plexus. Both surgery and RFA were considered potentially nerve damaging. Since the tumor showed expression of somatostatin receptors, we opted for a peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) with 177Lu-DOTATOC. However, the therapy did not show the expected success, since the FGF-23 level had even temporarily increased. The patient was then successfully treated with RFA. A partial remission of the tumor was achieved and FGF-23 levels nearly normalized. Despite some severe neurological side effects, the patient showed a remarkable clinical improvement, with no symptoms of osteomalacia within a few weeks

    Distributions of vascular plants in the Czech Republic. Part 8

    The eighth part of the series on the distributions of vascular plants in the Czech Republic includes grid maps of 106 taxa in the genera Abutilon, Achillea. Arctium, Arenaria. Arnoseris, Carex. Chamaecytisus, Cornus, Diphasiastrum, Echinops. Galeopsis. Galium, Huperzia, Isoetes. Lyco-podiella. Lycopodium. Moehringia, Orobanche, Phelipanche, Prunus, Ranunculus, Selaginella. Stachys, Telekia, Typha and Zannichellia. These maps were produced by taxonomic experts based on examined herbarium specimens, literature and field records. Many of the studied native species are on the national Red List. They are represented by plants that are rare in the Czech Republic, in extreme cases confined to single sites (Arenaria grandiflora. Galium austriacum, Isoetes echinospora, I. lacustris and Orobanche teucrii). or that have experienced a considerable decline (e.g. Arnoseris minima. Carex hordeistichos, C. secalina. Diphasiastrum tristachyum and Lycopodiella inundata), or a combination of both (e.g. Orobanche artemisiae-campestris. O. coerulescens, Phelipanche arenaria. Ph. caesia and Stachys germanica). Three species (Moehringia muscosa, Selaginella helvetica and Typha minima) have been extirpated from this country. Alien species are represented by both archaeophytes (e.g. Arctium lappa, A. tomentosum, Orobanche minor, Stachys annua and S. arvensis) and neophytes (e.g. Abutilon theophrasti and Typha laxmannii). Two species have become invasive: Echinops sphaerocephalus spreads mainly in dry and disturbed habitats along roads and railways in warm lowlands, whereas Telekia speciosa is now locally frequent in various habitats mainly at middle and high elevations. Echinops bannaticus is reported here as a new alien species in the Czech Republic that occasionally escapes from cultivation. Spatial distributions and often also temporal dynamics of individual taxa are shown in maps and documented by records included in the Pladias database and available in electronic appendices. The maps are accompanied by comments that include additional information on the distribution, habitats, taxonomy and biology of the taxa
