    The Marine Cyanate Cycle

    Get PDF
Cyanate (OCN-) is a reduced nitrogen compound with the potential to serve as a nitrogen and carbon source for marine microbes. Evidence from genomes and culture studies indicated that several marine cyanobacterial groups, including representatives of the globally important genera Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus, might be capable of cyanate assimilation. However, prior to this study, the distribution, bioavailability, and production pathways of cyanate were unknown in natural systems due to the absence of a sensitive cyanate assay; and the ability of organisms to assimilate cyanate on relevant timescales was unknown because we lacked a suitable tracer for measuring uptake. I developed a cyanate assay to measure cyanate concentrations in estuarine and seawater samples, and then measured distribution at sites in the coastal western temperate North Atlantic (NA) and eastern tropical South Pacific (ETSP) including the Oxygen Deficient Zone. Cyanate concentrations ranged from below the limit of detection (0.4 nM) to 65 nM in natural samples examined to date. Cyanate was produced photochemically and in senescent diatom cultures, but cyanate was not detectable in wet and dry offshore atmospheric deposition. Using a custom-synthesized 13C15N-labeled cyanate compound, I also measured rates of cyanate uptake by natural microbial communities in the NA and ETSP. Cyanate N uptake ranged from undetectable (\u3c 0.02) to 13 nmol l-1 h-1 and was significantly higher than cyanate C uptake on all cruises. Cyanate N uptake was up to 10% of total measured N uptake at an offshore oligotrophic station in the NA but contributed a smaller fraction of total measured N uptake (\u3c 2%) at coastal stations in the NA and ETSP. The results of this dissertation indicate that: 1) cyanate concentrations are measureable in the marine environment and cyanate has a biological-like distribution in marine systems; 2) cyanate is taken up in surface waters, probably by phytoplankton; 3) cyanate is produced photochemically in sunlit waters and from degradation of organic matter throughout the water column or through direct release by phytoplankton; and 4) cyanate is consumed in the mesopelagic region probably by either conversion to ammonium and then to nitrate or by cyanate-supported anaerobic ammonium oxidation (cyanammox) in oxygen deficient waters

NURSE HOME VISITATION PROGRAM IN HAMILTON COUNTY, OH TO INCREASE MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH OUTCOMES

    Get PDF
Hamilton County Ohio currently has poor outcomes related to maternal and infant health, specifically among African Americans. Compared to the Healthy People 2020 goals, Hamilton County has higher rates of infant mortality, preterm birth, neonatal infant mortality, and conception within 18 months of previous pregnancies. These rates are disproportionate among African Americans. For instance, African American babies born in Ohio have higher infant mortality rate (14.3 per 1,000) prematurity as a cause of death (4 per 1,000) and neonatal mortality rate (9.2 per 1,000). These are compared to White babies in Ohio with infant mortality rate (5.1 per 1,000), prematurity as a cause of death (1.4 per 1,000) and neonatal mortality rate (3.4 per 1,000). Similar disparities among maternal health is seen between Black and White women. In order to address these disparities in maternal and infant health, we are proposing a 3 year evidence-based nurse home visitation program that will decrease modifiable risk factors that pertain to poor birth outcomes, decrease modifiable risk factors that pertain to child abuse and neglect, and to help with the parental life course in ways of helping maternal life development in education and the workforce, and decreasing rapid successive pregnancies. This nurse home visitation program has shown great success across the country and we hope to bring it to Hamilton County. Women in the program must be enrolled at or before 28 weeks of pregnancy, and will spend 60-90 minutes with nurses in the homes focusing on the six domains of home visitation (personal health, environmental health, life course development, maternal role, family and friends, and health and human services). Recruitment of participants will occur at the Hamilton County Health Department, Planned Parenthood, and the OBGYN offices of UC Health, Mercy Health and TriHealth. Process evaluations will occur during recruitment and implementation of the program. Outcome evaluations will include questionnaires and biometric data to access our goals of the program. Short term outcomes include having mothers complete the program, mothers receive adequate prenatal care, they deliver full term and appropriate gestational weight babies, and they have knowledge of relaxation and stress relieving techniques. Our medium term outcomes include increasing knowledge of proper prenatal care, increase the knowledge of proper childcare, and mothers better care for their children. Finally, our long term goals for this program include lowering the rates of maternal and infant mortality, lowering the rates of child abuse and neglect, and bettering the lives of the mothers

This dissertation focuses on satirical novels which were written in exile in the 1930s during the Nazi period and were only seldom received by readers and critics. The novels embody a search for the conditions that gave rise to Nazi rule and attribute a considerable portion of the responsibility to a widespread lack of principle which led people to zealously fell in line with whatever was prevalent at the time and which was the result not of material privation but of personal weakness, for which the people themselves were to blame. These novels written in exile are in the tradition of Georg Christoph Lichtenberg and Heinrich Heine's enlightening satires on petit bourgeois life. All the satires studied avail themselves of the concept of the "Untertan", or subservient subject, which Heinrich Mann outlined in his novels. It would seem that the satirical type of the potentially fascist petit bourgeois with leanings towards anti-democratic ideology can only be described ex negativo. Consequently, the weak personality of the subservient figure is confronted with more creative characters, with outsiders and rogues. These standard figures embody encrusted bourgeois ideals. If the petit bourgeois thinking of the main protagonists is to be seen as an atrophied stage in bourgeois existence, then the non-conformists must be regarded as extremes of this, both corresponding to and challenging the others' lack of principle. At first sight it would appear to be imprudent to deride an opponent such as fascism, which openly and emphatically renounces reason. Yet by neutralising logical behaviour, laughter enables one to react to the arbitrary use of power and accept the existence of absurdity. By means of laughter emotion cajoles reason into tolerating the brutal fact of Nazism. In all the works I have examined, exile has the effect of promoting political radicalism. Yet the "Volksfrontgedanke", or popular front concept, is not necessarily the outcome of such a process of developing awareness on the part of the author. The satirical gesture is more one of individualistic hostility to dogmatism nurtured by scepticism and pessimism. If the provisional ego of criticism is to regain a standpoint in satire, then only at the price of the idea of progress. These novels clearly show what National Socialism demanded of bourgeois literature \endash a denial of any upward trend in culture, intellectual pursuit, civilisation. These satirical novels can be regarded as a companion piece to the Socialist novel of resistance. Whatever way it is rendered, the motif of "a critique of the petit bourgeois" reveals much the same dissension as that of the satirist towards the strategy of the Communist Party. Any such left-wing bourgeois thinking came to an abrupt end with the accession to power of the National Socialists in 1933

This Comment argues that California should continue the evolution of its statutory scheme by: (1) allowing and enforcing visitation terms in all adoption agreements that meet the statutory requirements of voluntariness and the best interests of the child, and (2) requiring that the consent process inform all birth parents of the possibility of these agreements

Normative, validation, and reliability studies of the Nine-Hole Peg Test scores with children

The purpose of this study was to establish norms for fine motor dexterity skills on elementary school children five to ten years old and conduct reliability and validity studies utilizing the Nine-Hole Peg Test. Sample included 1,020 students in ten elementary schools in the Las Vegas area. As children got older, their fine motor speed increased. Significant gender differences were indicated in dexterity in all ages, but only in the dominant hand. Moderately high test-retest reliability and high interrater reliability were obtained. Strong correlation between the NHPT and Purdue Pegboard Test scores provided concurrent validity of the NHPT. Significant difference in dexterity scores between regular and special education groups provided construct validity evidence. Students provided with demonstration and verbal directions showed faster dexterity speed than those with only verbal directions. This study has supported the Nine-Hole Peg Test as an effective screening tool for fine motor dexterity in school-age children
