Public Schools, Politics and Associational Culture in England, 1899-1939

This thesis examines the role of associational culture in helping public school boys develop their political interests in the first half of the twentieth century. This thesis explores two schools in-depth within the wider context of the public school system: Harrow, an elite, conservative, school and Gresham’s, a less prominent but more progressive school. By drawing on two very different schools, this thesis shows the similarities between the schools, as well as their freedom to explore different educational opportunities. Studying associational culture, this thesis explores the development of informal civics education. This is often missed in studies of broader efforts to promote civics education as well as general histories of the curriculum. Associational culture was and is a universal feature of public schools, but the specifics of how this is done varies from school to school. By examining extra-curricular activities, this study is able to explore more experimental methods of engaging with politics than the traditional curriculum was able to provide. The broad period covered also saw many developments in how people engaged in politics, and the boys in these schools demonstrate this. Drawing primarily on the events recorded in the school magazines provides a consistent insight into school life as it was written, as well as how it was portrayed. The material comes from reports on the activities of the societies at the schools. This is primarily from debating societies, which ran throughout this whole period, with varying levels of success, and continue in the present day. New societies were formed at various points during this period, and their arrival into the life of public school boys are explored. Statistical analyses are also used to track trends across this period in order to provide a broader insight into how boys interacted with politics within the school

Challenges and solutions during analysis in a longitudinal narrative case study.

AIM: To describe the challenges faced by those performing complex qualitative analysis during a narrative study and to offer solutions. BACKGROUND: Qualitative research requires rigorous analysis. However, novice researchers often struggle to identify appropriately robust analytical procedures that will move them from their transcripts to their final findings. The lack of clear and detailed accounts in the literature that consider narrative analysis and how to address some of the common challenges researchers face add to this problem. DATA SOURCES: A longitudinal narrative case study exploring the personal and familial changes reported by uninjured family members during the first year of another family member's traumatic brain injury. Review methods This is a methodological paper. DISCUSSION: The challenges of analysis included: conceptualising analysis; demonstrating the relationship between the different analytical layers and the final research findings; interpreting the data in a way that reflected the priorities of a narrative approach; and managing large quantities of data. The solutions explored were: the mapping of analytic intentions; aligning analysis and interpretation with the conceptual framework; and the use of matrices to store and manage quotes, codes and reflections. CONCLUSION: Working with qualitative data can be daunting for novice researchers. Ensuring rigorous, transparent, and auditable data analysis procedures can further constrain the interpretive aspect of analysis. Implications for research/practice The solutions offered in this paper should help novice researchers to manage and work with their data, assisting them to develop the confidence to be more intuitive and creative in their research

Annotating high-impact 5'untranslated region variants with the UTRannotator

SUMMARY: Current tools to annotate the predicted effect of genetic variants are heavily biased towards protein-coding sequence. Variants outside of these regions may have a large impact on protein expression and/or structure and can lead to disease, but this effect can be challenging to predict. Consequently, these variants are poorly annotated using standard tools. We have developed a plugin to the Ensembl Variant Effect Predictor, the UTRannotator, that annotates variants in 5'untranslated regions (5'UTR) that create or disrupt upstream open reading frames (uORFs). We investigate the utility of this tool using the ClinVar database, providing an annotation for 31.9% of all 5'UTR (likely) pathogenic variants, and highlighting 31 variants of uncertain significance as candidates for further follow-up. We will continue to update the UTRannotator as we gain new knowledge on the impact of variants in UTRs. Collaborative development of an accelerated graduate entry nursing programme outside of traditional funding mechanisms

Financial support for students entering nurse education programmes has typically been the responsibility of Governments who make a substantial contribution to tuition and/or living costs. However, where programmes are not funded by Government bodies, students must make alternative arrangements for financial support. This paper explores how a university worked with local employers to design, recruit and deliver an accelerated graduate entry nursing programme and how this philosophy of collaboration ultimately led to local health employers providing sponsorship for students. Therefore, we offer for debate the benefits of collaborative curriculum design and future considerations of attracting employer funding for graduate entry nursing programmes.N/

Pendressia, nom. nov. (Monimiaceae), a new generic name for Wilkiea wardellii from north-east Queensland

The new generic name Pendressia Whiffin is proposed to replace the name Endressia Whiffin (Monimiaceae) which is illegitimate, being a later homonym of Endressia J.Gay (Apiaceae). The new combination Pendressia wardellii (F.Muell.) Whiffin is proposed for Wilkiea wardellii, and descriptions of both the genus and species are provided. The distinctiveness and relationships of Pendressia are discussed, and notes on habitat and distribution of the species are provided
