Unsupervised Learning of Style-sensitive Word Vectors

This paper presents the first study aimed at capturing stylistic similarity between words in an unsupervised manner. We propose extending the continuous bag of words (CBOW) model (Mikolov et al., 2013) to learn style-sensitive word vectors using a wider context window under the assumption that the style of all the words in an utterance is consistent. In addition, we introduce a novel task to predict lexical stylistic similarity and to create a benchmark dataset for this task. Our experiment with this dataset supports our assumption and demonstrates that the proposed extensions contribute to the acquisition of style-sensitive word embeddings.Comment: 7 pages, Accepted at The 56th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL 2018

The Central Gas Systems of Early-Type Galaxies Traced by Dust Feature: Based on the HST WFPC2 Archival Images

    Get PDF
We investigated the central gas systems of E/S0 galaxies by making use of the WFPC2 images of the Hubble Space Telescope archive. We searched the gas systems that were traced by the dust with a new method of making color excess images in F555W - F814W (V-I). Out of 25 sample galaxies, we detected gas system in 14 galaxies. The dust was newly detected in two galaxies that were thought to contain no dust based on single band, pre-refurbishment data. The full extents of the gas systems are 0.1 to 3.5 kpc, and the masses of the gas, log M(gas) [M(solar)], are 4.2 to 7.2. The AGN activity is well correlated with existence of the gas systems. None of galaxies without the gas systems show the AGN activity. On the other hand, some galaxies with the gas systems show the AGN activity; optical AGN activities are shown in 5 out of 11 galaxies of which AGNs are optically studied, and radio activities are shown in 6 out of 14 galaxies. This shows that the AGN activity is driven with the gas system.Comment: gzipped tarred file containing 7 files: Tomita.tex (main text, needs aaspp4.sty), Tomita.tab[1,2].tex (tables, need aj_pt4.sty), Tomita.fig [1a,1b,1c,2].ps (PS figures). Ecological studies of aquatic moss pillars in Antarctic lakes 2. Temperature and light environment at the moss habitat

    Get PDF
To understand the environmental conditions, which control the growth of moss pillars in lake bottoms, water temperature and light in the moss pillar habitat in lake Kuwai Ike in Skarvsnes, Soya Coast, East Antarctica, were continuously measured for about one year, February 1999 to Jannuary 2000. Limnological characteristics of surface water of the lake were investigated in summer 2000, and compared with those in four neighboring lakes. Low contents of ions, neutral pH and dissolved oxygen in saturation level in the surface water in Kuwai-Ike lake were comparable to the values of the other oligotrophic freshwater lakes in Soya Coast and Schirmacher Oasis, located in Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica. The temperature at the lake bottom showed uni-modal seasonal change, in the range 0-12°C. Several sudden temperature drops of > 2°C within a few hours were recorded in the ice-free autumn season; they may have been correlated with the wind-induced vertical mixing events which occurred before complete ice cover development on the lake surface. Light reaching the lake bottom showed clear diel and seasonal fluctuations, and the flux density was strongly affected by the attenuations of water, ice and snow: the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) measured at the lake bottom was s^ was recorded for nearly 2 months in winter; however, daily fluxes over 1 mol m^ day^ were recorded for the other ca. 8 months, with >100μmol m^ s^ of instantaneous peak fluxes around noon

Simplified Method to Evaluate Upper Limit Stress Intensity Factor Range of an Inner-Surface Circumferential Crack under Steady State Thermal Striping

Simplified method to evaluate the upper limit stress intensity factor (SIF) range of an inner-surface circumferential crack in a thin- to thick-walled cylinder under steady state thermal striping was considered in this paper. The edges of the cylinder were rotation-restrained and the outer surface was adiabatically insulated. The inner surface of the cylinder was heated by a fluid with constant heat transfer coefficient whose temperature fluctuated sinusoidally at constant amplitude ΔT. By combining our analytical temperature solution for the problem and our semianalytical numerical SIF evaluation method for the crack, we showed that the desired maximum steady state SIF range can be evaluated with an engineering accuracy after ΔT, the mean radius to wall thickness ratio rm/W of the cylinder, the thermal expansion coefficient and Poisson’s ratio are specified. By applying are method, no transient SIF analysis nor sensitivity analysis of the striping frequency on the SIF range is necessary. Numerical results showed that our method is valid for cylinders in a range of rm/W = 10 to 1

Population changes of Ad_lie and emperor penguins along the Prince Olav Coast and on the Riiser-Larsen Peninsula

The trends of penguin populations are thought to be reliable indicators of ecosystem changes in the Southern Ocean. There are seven Ad_lie penguin colonies and one emperor penguin colony along the Prince Olav Coast and one emperor penguin colony on the Riiser-Larsen Peninsula. We compiled and analyzed the available data collected by airborne and ground census between 1971 and 2000 in order to determine the breeding status of penguins in this area. Ad_lie penguin populations increased at two colonies; no apparent trends were observed at other colonies. Emperor penguin populations were high in the mid-1990s and suddenly decreased in 2000. Populations need to be carefully monitored in the coming years
